There’s no shortage of media coverage surrounding tonight’s premiere. You would have to being living under the Black Rock to not know that Lost Season 4 debuts tonight. To tide us over for the rest of the day, since we are obviously too excited to focus on anything else, here’s a list of links to keep us busy while we wait. We thank all of our fellow Lost fans who sent some of these in.

Potential Spoiler Warning

  • USA TODAY gives tonight’s episode 4 out of 4 stars in their review: ‘Lost’ rescues a TV season that’s adrift.

Returning with a heart-stopping, perfectly pitched episode that fulfills all the promise of last season’s stunner of a finale, Lost is an oasis in a strike-parched TV desert.

  • AOL Television did a “‘Lost’ A to Z Guide” - 26 reasons why season 4 will be pretty interesting. Thanks Andie
  • ToeKnee found a few preview articles that are worth repeating here: ‘Lost’ finds new ways to intrigue from the Boston Globe and one from nj.com here: Sepinwall on TV: ‘Lost’ season four review
  • Here’s a video interview with Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) on redlasso.com from this morning on the CW 11 New York Morning Show
  • This interview with Michael Emerson (Ben) is a good one. He describes the character of Ben here:

He’s certainly an antagonist. He certainly makes things happen. He provokes behavior in the part of others and his methods are mysterious and frightening. We fear Ben because we fear the unknown. If his agenda were more clear, we might feel differently about him. I think a day will come, and maybe I flatter myself here, when we see more clearly what his sight is, who his enemies are, and we may decide he’s a more heroic character than we thought previously

  • Finally, you can listen to a podcast interview Matthew Fox from Australian radio station Triple M. It’s broken into 3 parts. Thanks Jason

Enjoy, see you all in the comments tonight!

Lost Podcast Review

As promised, here is our summary of the Lost Podcast posted last Friday on ABC.com:

-Damon and Carlton make sure we know this is a “special” suprise podcast given the dates relevance to the crash date of Oceanic 815

-At end of the 3rd Season, the survivors have been on the Island for about 100 days

-They are “busily” at work on Season 4, not sure when they are exactly going back on the air, but will be in February for sure; again day and time slot are not official

-There will be flash forwards and flash backs moving forward

-Carlton and Damon then suprise a few Lost listeners by calling them and allowing them to ask questions:

Warning, Possible Spoilers!!

*First Question: Have you guys had a definite plan related to the love triangle of Sawyer/Kate/Jack?

-They have agreed on who Kate will ultimately end up with, but didn’t elaborate beyond that… The flash forward was not the end of the show, even though things look grim for Kate and Jack.

*Second Question: Was the flash forward a definite occurrence, or was that a “possible” future?

-Damon and Carlton are not big fans of multiple futures, and are working very hard to maintain continuity, “the future is the future”. Damon does say that time and time travel will continue to be a show motif.

*Third Question: What is happening with Richard Alpert?

-Nestor was cast to play Alpert and his storyline was ramped up given his initial performance around the same time he did the “Cane” pilot. They essentially have him parked for now and the success of Cane will probably dictate how available Nestor is so that Alpert’s storyline can be tied up.

*Fourth Question: Are Nikki and Paulo really dead?

-Yes (there was more conversation here, rather pointless)

Fifth Question: Will we find out if Kate is pregnant with Sawyer’s child?

-We will find out, and probably within the first 4 episodes

Sixth Question: Is Mikhail still alive?

-No, but will probably be part of backstories, etc.

That pretty much sums up the podcast, nothing profound, but at least we have more information on where some things stand. The most interesting conversation was related to the confirmation that the flash forward we saw is the definite future, not a possible one; so Jack really does get to that alcoholic, pill-popping, miserable state of existence we saw him in… I cannot wait until February!

There’s an interview with Dominic Monaghan who plays Charlie on the show. Dominic discusses the possibility of his character dying, his acting career, his relationship with the other actors and his musical tastes.

The Man Behind the Curtain rehash touches on:

  • The possible glimpse of Jacob
  • The purging of the Dharma Initiative by the Others
  • Ben’s realization that John could hear Jacob, the significance of that, and then Ben shooting John.

Damon and Carlton review “The Brig”:

Possible Spoilers

  • Confirm that the Locke/Cooper/Sawyer story was planned for a while and they had left multiple crumbs along the way, dating back to the beginning of Season 2
  • We will see more of Richard Alpert this week. On the surface it looks like he is subverting Ben, via the manipulation of Locke by giving him the blue print (Sawyer’s file) to kill Cooper without pulling the proverbial trigger. Is he using Locke as his mechanism to exact some initiative against Ben, does he really believe Locke is special, or are he and Ben in cooperation to further manipulate Locke?
  • Damon speaks briefly about how seemingly easy Locke is manipulated by the Others, and how he takes everything quite literally (i.e. carrying Cooper’s dead body over his shoulder to presumably provide Ben the proof of his actions). I think there is a growing consensus that perhaps Locke could be the central character/hero figure for the series, and I really do not see it that way. I believe that Locke is now on his own personal journey to prove how “special” he is and this will continue to cause him to be manipulated by those who are feeding this hubris, as well as cause him to further manipulate his past friends and associates.

Let’s recount what Locke has accomplished this season:

  • Threw Mikhail into the sonic barrier, which was thought to have killed him, at the disbelief of Kate and Sayid, and in a move that could have warned the Others about their mission to rescue Jack, and to possibly prevent Mikhail from revealing his previous state of paralysis
  • Destroyed the supposed only means to the leave the Island with the C-4 that he stole from The Flame (I know it’s up for debate as to whether or not he really blew up the sub, but just humor me on this)
  • Abandoned Kate at the barracks to go on his personal quest with Ben
  • Blindly turns an eye as Rousseau gathers enough dynamite to blow up the Island
  • And most recently, manipulated Sawyer into killing Cooper because he could not bring himself to do it, or because this would somehow “taint” his own virtue

Are these the actions of a leader? I believe that Locke is setting himself up for a tragic ending, but I could be wrong. I am a fan of the reluctant, benevolent hero and along those lines I think we will see Jack re-emerge as this season comes to an end.

Obviously Damon and Carlton also comment on this week’s upcoming episode “The Man Behind The Curtain”, but beyond the fact that we are going to learn a lot about Ben, I’ll leave the specifics for you to hear!

Michael Giacchino

As a special little treat to the Lost fans, ABC has released a new episode of the official Lost video podcast featuring Lost composer Michael Giacchino.

In the video, which is available on iTunes and ABC.com, Giacchino talks about how he creates the music for Lost and shows us some of the instruments that are used.

As an aspiring writer/director, I’m a big fan of all kinds of behind the scenes documentaries so I really enjoyed watching this video podcast.

Update: You can now watch the video right here, courtesy of sawyer840.
