Lost Questions - Asian smoke monsters and crocodiles

I received a mail with some questions from Lost Blog reader Jason today:

In an anime movie called Vampire Hunter D, there are monsters called Mist Devils that resemble the monster on Lost. Is there any chance this has connection to Asian folklore that Jin would give insight to?

Saltwater Crocodiles are native to the south Asia/Australia region. They are the largest breed of crocodiles and sometimes grow just shy of 30 feet. Is there any chance of us seeing one of these on the island giving the castaways problems?

I am not aware of any connections between the smoke monster on Lost and Asian folklore. It’s not impossible, but to my knowledge we have not seen anything that points in that direction. Maybe some of our readers have more knowledge of smoke monsters in Asian folklore?

When it comes to crocodiles native to south Asia and Australia, I’m not able to give you a good answer either. The reason is that we have no idea where the island is located. Some belive that it is located between Australia and America, others belive that the island is in Antarctica and others believe that it is constantly moving.

Since we don’t know where the island is, we can’t assume that there is any connection to south Asia or Australia. On the other hand, we have seen boars, horses and polar bears on the island, so if you keep your fingers crosses, maybe some crocodiles will show up in a future episode!

IGN’s 50 Unanswered Lost Mysteries

The always ambitious IGN.com has published a massive list of mysteries that haven’t yet been answered. Here is a sample from the list:

#50: The Others and the Outside World

Whether or not The Others and The Dharma Initiative are the same, one thing has become obvious - The Others, unlike the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, have connections to the outside world. They apparently can watch TV, they know tons of details about each survivor, including Sawyer’s real name, Jack’s profession, etc. — things that you might get with some Internet searching skills or perhaps something more advanced than that. One also wonders whether their new clothes, food, books, medicine, etc. mean that they have intimate connections to the world outside the island, at least in order to gain life’s necessities.

So the question becomes why don’t The Others leave the confines of their surroundings themselves? If they know where to find rescue or how to get away from the island, what’s stopping them from doing so? After all, they promise Michael and Walt when they hand over their boat to them that by going in a specific direction, they will find rescue. How come they don’t utilize this outlet themselves in order to go back to the outside world, maybe for some spinal surgery?

Lost Questions - German voices in the hatch?

I added a Lost Questions and Tips section to the sidebar yesterday. The idea is that you, my wonderful readers will send me a mail when you spot something strange or interesting in a Lost TV episode, and if it’s interesting, I will post about it on the site and try my best to answer your question or investigate your tip. If I’m not able to answer the questions, hopefully you, the readers will discuss it in the comments.

Potential Spoilers

The first person to notice the new feature was Jeff from New York. I guess being first should entitle him to some prize, but since I don’t have one I’ll just try to answer his question.

Did you listen to the podcast that featured a caller from Germany who
heard a German voice inside the bunker yelling out to Locke to “close
the door” as he was leaving? This was in “Fire+Water” when Charlie
comes to Locke to ask for a good word with Claire.

I listened myself, but I can’t tell whether I’m hearing German voices,
or just a squeaky door hinge. What do you think?

Jeff in NYC

The strange sound in question can be found around 14 minutes into the Lost episode Fire+Water, right when John Locke exits the hatch and closes the door.

I’ve listened to the ghostlike sound several times. I tried amplifying it, and I tried removing the noise, but I am not able to make out any words. When the noise is removed it actually sounds exactly like the sound the door hinges made a split second before the spooky sound. I would say that it is the door hinges making a weird sound, or possibly the sound of a bird combined with the door hinges since a bird can be heard a short while later.

Nevertheless, there are rumors of a German voice being heard in the whispers after a German guy in the tail section was taken by the others. So maybe, just maybe, there is a spooky German in the hatch…

What are your thoughts on this?
