Dharma Wants you - Strange Image

I found this doing the pause click trick in the new video on DMY. Maybe someone can figure it out.

Hammer sent us this screenshot that he was able to capture. It’s obviously very strange and we’ve been unable to make anything of it, but you guys might. Thoughts?

A new email arrived this morning:

Namaste.
As a result of the outstanding assessment results delivered in recent weeks I am pleased to announce an expanded role for recruits in the Volunteer Assessment Program at www.dharmawantsyou.com.
This new activity will draw on the impressive knowledge base of recruits and will offer the opportunity to challenge your colleagues in a friendly intellectual competition.
You have the potential to earn significant Dharma Points with this new activity, which will contribute to your overall assessment results.
Log in and consult your “Progress” page for details.
I look forward to another inspiring display of initiative from you all.
Namaste.

Head of Recruiting
The Dharma Initiative

I had yet to complete test 3, so I went ahead and did both. Test 3, as most have you know, was essentially a game where you control a DHARMA logo and had to avoid getting hit by other moving objects, or touching the sides of the octagon you are playing within - max score of 100 based on the number of seconds you can survive. Test 4 was another multiple choice questionnaire.

There are also now video updates upon login where Hans essentially lets us know what is new - prior to Test 3, the video gave way to a potential cheat for that particular game - thanks to reader “Hammer” for originally pointing out the glitches in the video, and the following concise answer from Lostpedia.com:

With the mystery video also came some glitchy hacks, which spelled out B P M 40 60″. Stick it together and you get BPM 40-60, which apparently in music corresponds to the word “lento”. There do seem to be other possible cheats, like right-clicking to pause the game, but this must be the proper method for passing Test 3.

Test 3 is called a Dexterity and Attentiveness Evaluation. Basically, you’re controlling a Dharma logo and have to dodge little biddy asteroids for 100 seconds. The speed increases though, so its pretty tough to last for a full marks 100. However, typing in “lento” seems to make the asteroids speed drop dramatically, giving you time to move around safely. The cheat only lasts for a few seconds though, but you can repeat it. So you just need to find a safe corner, type lento and then repeat until you survive the game without a collision.

In the newest video posted, there is another glitchy hack in the first part of the video, but I cannot identify exactly what it is. Hans also lets us know that we can create our own multiple choice tests for other recruits - and this functionality is accessible from the “My Progress” section. I have not really dug into that yet, but let us know if you find anything worth discussing!

Received the following email this morning:

ATTENTION ALL RECRUITS
RE: BROAD SPECTRUM KNOWLEDGE ANALYSIS IS NOW LIVE

Namaste.
I am pleased to announce the release of the second assessment in the Dharma Initiative’s Volunteer Recruitment Program.
This new test is a broad-spectrum knowledge analysis.
It is a multiple-choice test covering a range of topics.
YOUR FIRST ATTEMPT AT THIS TEST WILL BE THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL BE RECORDED AGAINST YOUR OVERALL TEST RESULTS.
THE TEST WILL BE TIMED - DURATION WILL BE FACTORED INTO THE FINAL RESULT.
Be prepared before embarking on this assessment - there will be NO SECOND CHANCES.
I would also like to encourage recruits to take the opportunity to earn extra “Dharma” points. These points WILL contribute to your overall test results and the eventual position you will be assigned within the Dharma Initiative.
I trust you will find these new tasks sufficiently challenging and will embrace the opportunity to grow the Dharma Initiative.
I look forward to reviewing your results.
Hans Van Eeghen
Head of Recruiting
The Dharma Initiative

So, this test was basically a set of 10 questions - the results from my particular performance were not immediately available (not sure if that is standard protocol or because I failed dramatically) - it will be interesting to see where this goes. I am seeing a lot of heat out in the online Lost community about the direction thus far, specifically vs. what we got with Find815.com. What are your thoughts?

Just received this message via email:

ATTENTION ALL RECRUITS
RE: OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF TESTING
Namaste.
Today is the most wonderful of days.
It marks the launch of the Dharma Initiative’s Volunteer Recruitment Program.
Having completed the eligibility test you can now download your official Dharma Initiative ID card. Simply go to My Profile and download your card. Carry it with pride.
Today you will also be able to commence our extensive testing program that will assess your suitability for a range of research roles within the Dharma Initiative.
Many years ago I was asked to help rebuild this noble community of scientific inquiry. With its genuinely altruistic vision, I understood that a vibrant volunteer cohort would be a fundamental part of this effort.
Together, with my dedicated recruiting team, I have searched the globe for the best and brightest to join us, to form the foundations of the newly reconstituted Dharma Initiative.
Today we lay that foundation. So that together we can guide the world to a better tomorrow.
Hans Van Eeghen
Head of Recruiting
The Dharma Initiative

So, hopefully (fingers crossed) this is the start of something we will see on a regular, updated basis. I will post in the comments section once I have gone through some of the “extensive” testing program!

Enjoy.

Dharma Initiative Launch Date Email

New email received today from the Dharma Initiative:

ATTENTION ALL RECRUITS
RE: CONFIRMATION OF LAUNCH DATE FOR VOLUNTEER TESTING

I am pleased to announce that, following an extensive security audit of all departments within the Dharma Initiative, I am totally satisfied that DharmaWantsYou.com is now secure. As a result I am able to confirm a date for the commencement of our latest volunteer testing program.

Visit www.dharmawantsyou.com to confirm the launch date.

I have heard from many of you in recent weeks via email asking what will be assessed in the program and what the nature of our latest research is. I have found your enthusiasm and relentless curiosity extremely endearing. However, in the interests of maintaining the integrity of the testing process, I cannot be forthcoming on these enquiries.

Despite this, I would like to affirm to you all that I am extremely optimistic about these upcoming evaluations and believe that they will yield recruits of the highest caliber.

Good luck to all applicants.

Dharma Wants You - Join Us

As many of you already know, the new ARG kicked off yesterday with the official launch of DharmaWantsYou.com. It seems that the premise, at least initially, is going to be a series of tests that are psychological in nature. During the first test, you will continue to hear a phrase repeated that translated means:

“Those who come to the Dharma Initiative will have to travel a long way across the sea at a considerable speed. Work will include being outdoors and physical labor. You may also experience some instability of time along the way. Hopefully you, like many others, feel that your social duty is more important than your personal safety.”

Pretty interesting stuff thus far - we will see where it goes.

Find815.com Chapter 1

FlyOceanicAir.com was updated yesterday and the video was consistently interrupted by the URL Find815.com. I will let you guys explore for yourself, but it is pretty cool; yet another story that seems to at least be tangential to the primary Lost storyline, representating another Interactive movement in the vain of TLE.

This particular story follows a gentlemen by the name of Sam and his quest to find out what happened to the passengers of Flight 815, specifically a flight attendant by the name of Sonya that he was obviously in love with. When the site loads we initially see a news cast associated with 815.

This ARG will continue for the next few weeks, up until the Season 4 Premiere. In this first chapter you should end up finding at least 3 videos and 2 interactive “games”.

Enjoy and please use this thread to post anything you can find.

*Update*

On behalf of those who do not wish to have to dig for the videos, I will post those that I am able to locate, chronologically in each thread related to the ARG.

Here are the latest links related to Lost.

  • Lost Video Game - Damon and Carlton commented about this in the most recent podcast, but it looks like the video game is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal (these guys worked on the Splinter Cell series) for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms. A definitive release date has not yet been announced, but it should be this calendar year.
  • Entertainment Weekly - EW recently did a piece on the ratings decline, the decision to off Nikki and Paulo, and what would make for a suitable time to end the show. There are a few spoilers in the article, but it is a good read.

Damon and Carlton explain The Lost Experience

My friend Jon from The Tailsection, who also writes for BuddyTV, was lucky enough to get an interview with Lost writers and exec producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse a few days ago.

I really like the interview since Jon asks some questions that I know many fans have been wanting answers to for quite some time. Among the things discussed is the importance of The Lost Experience:

BuddyTV: Is there enough information given on the show that someone could put together a fact-based theory that more or less explains what’s going on, on the island?

Carlton Cuse: I don’t think so, I mean, the story is not yet complete. I don’t think there’s enough that we’ve put out there that would allow someone to draw a conclusive theory about the island and the show.

Damon Lindelof: I think that there are bits and pieces that someone could put together. Recently Carlton and I put out to the Yahoo community all over the world, what do you think the monster is? And some people came alarmingly close to what its origins were, how it functions, what its purpose is, but they weren’t able to go the next level as Carlton says, deeper into saying, “That’s what it is but what does that mean in the grander scheme of what the island is.” It doesn’t mean that someone couldn’t accidentally back into it and anticipate something that they haven’t seen yet. But sort of the real hardcore intel about the island is going to start to reveal itself towards the end of the season as we learn more about the others.

BuddyTV: One thing that’s a bit of controversy in the fan community is whether or not any of the information from The Lost Experience game is actually a factor in the universe of the show. Is that something you could clear up for us?

Carlton Cuse: I think that for us, yeah, I mean, all of Alvar Hanso and his relationship with funding the Dharma Initiative is part of the mythology. The details of the Hanso Foundation’s demise…it’s tangential to the show but it’s not unrelated to the show. We sort of felt like the Internet Experience was a way for us to get out mythologies that we would never get to I wain the show. I mean, because this is mythology that doesn’t have an effect on the character’s lives or existence on the island. We created it for purposes of understanding the world of the show but it was something that was always going to be sort of below the water, sort of the iceberg metaphor, and the Internet Experience sort of gave us a chance to reveal it.

Damon Lindelof: I would say in terms of all the… background that we did, in terms of the Valenzetti equation and explaining the formation of the Hanso Foundation and doing the other films…we’d consider that stuff cannon to the show. Where there’d have to be wiggle room is the Rachel Blake story where she’s in the real world, in the outside world as we define it, the show Lost might be defined in an entirely different outside world so we can’t vouch for the overall fit ability and veracity of everything that Rachel was doing. But we can say that all the factoids that she was uncovering were vetted, in fact many of them were written by us personally so they are cannon.

The Lost Experience: The Summary

Lost Experience Spoilers

I know it can be frustrating for people who don’t want to play The Lost Experience to see these posts all summer, but hopefully we can wrap up the central storyline without too many extraneous details.

The focus of the story is on a young woman by the name of Rachel Blake. She was raised by a single mother, and decides to trace her educational funds one day, and finds that they originate from The Hanso Foundation (THF), a so-called philanthropic organization that supposedly uses science for the betterment of humankind.

However, as she digs deeper, she uncovers many dark secrets about the organization. She decides to start hacking their website under the pseudonym “Persephone”, on a mission to expose the executives and projects of THF. They all involve illegal or unethical activities, including illegal organ harvesting, use of mathematical forecasting to start wars, questionable experiments with genetic engineering and life extension, and the intentional spread of viruses to limit population growth.

She discovers that the founder of the organization, Alvar Hanso himself, is missing, and that the president and heir apparent, Thomas Werner Mittelwerk, is running the Foundation. He is something of a mad scientist with a Messiah complex, who will stop at nothing to further his own agenda. She follows him and the clues throughout numerous European cities, Sri Lanka, and even stops at Comic Con to accuse the Lost panel writers of being liars and helping THF. Along the way, she meets a number of ‘accessory’ characters that become friends and try to help her, some of whom even give up their lives for the cause.

The most important things she finds that are relevant to the Lost story are about the DHARMA Initiative’s connection to the Valenzetti Equation (first seen on blast door map). Enzo Valenzetti was an Italian mathematician who was contracted by the U.N. Security Counsel after the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 to formulate an equation to predict how and when humanity would destroy itself. Each of The Numbers: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, are “core factors” in this equation, standing for a different method of self-destruction, such as nuclear war or pandemic. The hieroglyphics, as seen on the countdown clock in Lost, mean “Underworld”, but are representative symbols for The Numbers in the Valenzetti Equation.

DHARMA turns out to be an acronym that stands for Department of Heuristics and Research into Material Applications. They were a group funded by THF to look into changing these environmental and human factors (The Numbers), thereby saving humanity. They were sent to a remote island location to attempt this, and the stations, food and medicine drops were all for these scientists. The radio tower (Danielle mentioned to Hurley) was set up by DHARMA to broadcast the Numbers until one of the values could be changed. There is the suggestion that the Sickness may have been purposely introduced as a transgenic virus that was part of their experimentation with a ‘vaccine’ aimed at manipulating one of these values.

In the end, Mittelwerk says DHARMA failed, but he still seems determined to continue the work at all costs, even that of many human lives. He imprisoned mathematicians and autistic savants in the Vik Institute (supposedly a mental health hospital) and forced them to run the Valenzetti Equation over and over, until they verified that a mortality rate of 30% was “optimal” for his research purposes. It appears that there are specific ‘genetic targets’ that are being sought for experimentation, who may have different degrees of susceptibility to this disease.

He was about to send another group of scientist recruits to some remote villages to spread the virus again, when he was partially thwarted by Rachel Blake. She blew the whistle on THF’s unsavory activities. THF headquarters were raided by law enforcement, but it was a trap, and Mittelwerk got away. His last words were a vow that we hadn’t heard the last from him, and that he still had the virus and planned to use it.

In the end, Rachel tracks down Alvar Hanso in Norway. He claims that he was unable to stop Mittelwerk, because he was a relative prisoner in his home, due to experimental medical treatments (not elaborated, but appear to involve life extension). The big revelation given at the end is that Alvar Hanso is Rachel’s real father.

Other revelations given along the way that are connected to Lost:

  • The Black Rock was a slave ship from the 1800s that was owned by Magnus Hanso, Alvar’s grandfather, a Danish trader. It was supposedly shipwrecked and never heard from again.
  • The Apollo Candy Company is owned by The Hanso Foundation. Some of the experimental ingredients in their products include psychotropic and viral-spreading substances.
  • Gary Troup wrote not only Bad Twin, but also a non-fiction book on the Valenzetti Equation; however, all the copies were bought up by THF to keep the equation secret. Troup was flying with his financee, Cindy Chandler, the flight attendent on Flight 815 (and Lost tail section survivor) when the plane crashed. He is presumed dead.
  • The Hanso Foundation has close ties to Widmore Corporation (in the U.K.) and Paik Heavy Industries (in Korea). The latter was contracted to build THF a huge quarantined hospital ship called the Helgus Antonius.
  • There are two new DHARMA films that are shown. One is called “Psychology Testing Issues 1980″, and is simply a rapid fire sequence of 115 images, some of which are repetitive themes from Lost (boars, medication vials, etc.). View that one HERE. The other was the hugely revealing film we are calling the “Sri Lanka video”, which Rachel shot, and which is led to many of the revelations discussed above. You can view that one second from the bottom below. Both this and the other film have new DHARMA logos.
  • Rachel’s videos on YouTube in chronologic order:

    #1 VIDEO (Copenhagen)
    #2 VIDEO(Copenhagen)
    #3 VIDEO (Copenhagen)
    #4 VIDEO (Copenhagen)
    #5 VIDEO (Iceland)
    #6 VIDEO (Italy)
    #7 VIDEO (Paris)
    #8 VIDEO (Paris)
    #9 VIDEO (Paris)
    #10 VIDEO (Paris)
Comic Con VIDEO (San Diego, not shot by her)
    #11 VIDEO (Sri Lanka)
    #12 VIDEO (Norway)

Hope this was of some help! Please comment if you see glaring omissions or inaccuracies. For those who want more details with pictures and links (but still directed to storytelling only for non-players), click HERE.
