Tonight is the Season 5 two-hour finale, and we can fully expect huge things to happen. What answers are we going to get? I don’t know and have intentionally avoided as much Lost information as possible this week to avoid even the smallest chance to be spoiled. In the spirit of that, I will not attempt to speculate on what’s going to happen other than posting the official ABC episode description below.

Spoiler Warning

ABC’s Official Show Description:

Jack’s decision to set things right on the island is met with some strong resistance by those close to him, and Locke assigns Ben a difficult task.

So many questions from last week’s episode, but first, a comment about the photo. I am confident the centricity of tonight’s episode is not going to be solely focused on Ben – but with a title like “Follow The Leader”, I thought a perplexed look on any character’s face would suffice. Much of this season (as in most seasons of Lost) has been about leadership struggles and the moment in which certain characters are required to be leaders. At various times this year, we’ve seen Locke, Sawyer, Richard, Widmore, Faraday and Ben all exert themselves as leaders, whereas the leader from seasons past, Jack, has taken a different approach. That is, up until now - given Faraday’s untimely death, it does look like Jack may see this as his opportunity to find his destiny.

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“Jack and Kate find themselves at odds over the direction to take to save their fellow island survivors, Locke further solidifies his stance as leader of “The Others,” and Sawyer and Juliet come under scrutiny from the Dharma Initiative.”

This looks like an episode that will jump back and forth between the two timeframes from an Island stand point and may not have a central character figure – though there are rumors that we’ll get a heavy dose of Richard Alpert tonight. It will be interesting to see how Daniel’s diary factors into the last few hours of this season and what exactly Jack and Kate are able to achieve with the information he has left behind.

The title of tonight’s episode pays homage to and provides reference to one of the best from last season that featured Desmond, “The Constant”. Perhaps tonight we’ll learn what makes Desmond so different/special. Looks like it will be non-stop drama from here on out until the end of the season!

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“On the 100th episode milestone for the series, the time of reckoning has begun when Daniel Faraday comes clean regarding what he knows about the Island.”

The centricity of this episode will focus on Faraday in the form of a flash back – at this point, scientifically speaking, it would seem that Faraday knows the most about the Island and far much more than he has let on so far. We should get a better understanding of how he ended up in the black-ops DHARMA initiative as well.

When an episode title of Lost references Star Wars, we should obviously expect to be in for a treat. Doc Jensen of Entertainment Weekly posted a good article on this week’s episode and specifically how the title could relate to, yes, Star Wars, but also Norse mythology – worth checking out.

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“Suspicions about a possible breach intensify after Ben is taken from the infirmary, and a reluctant Miles is forced to work with Hurley when he’s asked to deliver an important package to a top Dharma official.”

The centricity of this episode looks to focus on Miles – an interesting character since his introduction and one that we know very little about beyond the fact that he can speak to dead people. Perhaps tonight we find out how he came to realize that unique ability and more about him in general. Based on the show description it also looks like Miles and Hurley will be going off-Island for a little 1977 adventure to the main land, which should, at a minimum, provide for some sarcastic humor.

Dead Is Dead

Given the conclusion of last week’s episode (the Locke “I’m back from the dead moment” as Ben wakes up) and the cryptic title of this episode, I cannot help but think of the irony of the situation. If Lost has taught us anything, it would be that dead is not necessarily dead. After last week’s episode we have a better understanding of the circumstances that lead Ben to the Hostiles, and hopefully this week will find out a good bit more about the pyramid, the smoke monster and exactly how Ben loses his innocence.

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“To atone for sins of the past, Ben must attempt to summon the smoke monster in order to be judged.”

This is the first episode description I can recall where the smoke monster is actually referenced directly – for that reason alone this is really one of the more important episodes of Season 5. The implications are vast, but I doubt tonight we find out exactly what the smoke monster is, there is still too much time left in the series for that! Based on the preview, it looks like we’ll get some additional story from Ben’s off-Island experiences with the Oceanic 6 – remember how beaten and bruised he was getting on Flight 316 – just how did that happen?

Quick Reminder: Please follow the rules of posting. There have been a few heated comments exchanged over the last few weeks and we need to keep that at a minimum. Everyone’s opinion contributes to the discussion. We only ask that comments be posted in a respectful manner. In addition to being “kind and helpful”, there is no tolerance for spoilers here. This remains a spoiler-free blog and we appreciate your help with that. Thank you to all, have fun.

Whatever Happened, Happened

What a cliffhanger from last week – show of hands from everyone who thinks Ben is dead or is going to die (no hands, crickets chirping, etc.)? There are two lines of thought here – one that Sayid did manage to kill Ben as a child and therefore this spins off into an alternate timeline (far-fetched IMO) and then those that think somehow little Ben survives this mishap and goes on to become the evil genius we have grown to know and love. Ultimately, I fall into the camp that subscribes to the latter of those two scenarios, and further believe that these events have already taken place in Ben’s life, but are now just being realized in the life of the survivors of Flight 815 – hence last week’s episode where big Ben cryptically called Sayid a killer, and then ultimately Sayid delivered that line to little Ben when he shot him.

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“Kate goes to extreme measures to save Ben’s life when Jack refuses to help. Meanwhile, Kate begins to tell the truth about the lie in order to protect Aaron”

So, based on the show description this looks to be an episode focused around Kate and she is instrumental in saving Ben’s life. Hopefully we’ll find out what she did with Aaron prior to jumping on Flight 316 and quite possibly what Sawyer whispered to her at the end of Season 5 before he jumped out of the helicopter. This should prove to be quite an intense episode with little Ben’s life hanging in the balance!

He’s Our You

lost_sayid.jpgHe’s Our You will be a Sayid-centric episode (about time) and should prove to be quite interesting. With Sawyer in control and “thinking” about what to do next, I do not expect Sayid to wait around too long in his cell for Sawyer to figure it out. I think it’s also safe to say we get more of creepy-kid Ben in this episode as well. The dynamic between Sayid and him should be compelling given the way that Sayid feels about Ben now.

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“Things begin to unravel when one of the survivors goes rogue and takes matters into their own hands — risking the lives of everyone on the island”

The dialogue between Jack and Sawyer in last week’s episode spells trouble for a jubilant reconciliation amongst the Oceanic 6 and those left behind, in my opinion. Three years is a long time and the situation has certainly been turned on its head, with Sawyer assuming the leadership role and Jack forced to essentially wait and see what happens next. In my opinion, that is one of the greatest components of Lost as a television series - the reality of the situation is that, in three years, much HAS changed as it relates to the interpersonal relationships within the characters on the show and the group cannot just pick up where things left off.

Back, after our one week hiatus, and what should prove to be a rather interesting episode given where we left off at the conclusion of LaFleur. Is three years really enough time to get over someone – Sawyer may live to eat those words yet! Tonight’s episode will, rather obviously, focus on the DHARMA Initiative and perhaps how the Oceanic Six (well Three anyway) become integrated into the commune. I am curious how much of the last three years in DHARMA land we’ll get back story for LaFleur and the rest of the gang…

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“Sawyer is forced to perpetuate his lie when some old friends drop in unannounced.”

There was an interesting comment made by actress Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) in an interview with TVGuide.com this week – to paraphrase she said ““LaFleur” was one of those little “eyes of the storm.” You’ve been storming, you’ve been storming, you get to the middle and you’re like, “Oh, it’s not so bad. It’s kind of nice here! I’ll wait around here and take a deep breath.” And then you start right in. It should be pretty exciting.” The last half of this season should be remarkable – tonight’s in particular is rumored to be Ben-centric, and hopefully we’ll learn more about his past.

Craziness – crazy that we are already at the mid-point of Season 5! And even more crazy that I think the questions in my head far outnumber the answers we have left to (hopefully) get over the last season and a half of our favorite show. Enjoy this week’s episode, because I believe we are due for a one week hiatus after “LaFleur” – which in case you were wondering, is French for “Flower”.

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“Sawyer perpetuates a lie with some of the other island survivors in order to protect themselves from mistakes of the past.”

The episode preview would suggest that we are going to get the reunion of the Oceanic 6 (or 3) with those originally left behind. So, a few questions to ponder heading into tonight’s episode (and to stimulate some pre-show commentary):

  • What is the current time period the Island is now in?
  • Why did Ben really kill Locke, given Locke was a nanosecond from committing suicide? Lots of theories out there…
  • Presented yet again with the never-ending love triangle that is Jack, Kate, Sawyer; who will Kate ultimately choose?

316

Tonight is all about learning how exactly the Oceanic 6 can/will get back to the Island. At the conclusion of last week’s episode, you will recall a couple of things happening:

  • Jack, Desmond, Sun and Ben met with Eloise Hawking and she was preparing to show them the way back to the Island
  • Locke (in theory) put the frozen donkey wheel back on its proper axis – which in turn should accomplish two things – sending him away from the Island (Tunisia perhaps?) and preventing the Island from skipping through time anymore

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“The members of Oceanic 6 discover how to get back to the island, but not all of them want to return.”

The centricity of tonight’s show is again hard to pinpoint, the title itself possibly alludes to a C.S Lewis novel (according to Doc Jensen). It will be interesting to see who actually goes back to the Island and if that happens tonight. There should be a couple character surprises tonight – so keep your eyes peeled during the show!
