Lost News Update - August 7th, 2007

A couple of “Lost” newsworthy items to provide some interesting reading this week:

Entertainment Weekly’s Q & A with Harold Perrineau: Nothing groundbreaking here, but it is compelling to get Perrineau’s thoughts about the secrecy regarding the show:

Have you ever worked on another project with this level of secrecy?
Never. And while it was really fun in the beginning, it gets a little like, Uhh, what am I doing? You really have to stay on your feet creatively, so when the scripts come you can find some way to make it as interesting and current and filled with as much stuff as you can, having just read it a week earlier. So, because I’ve been gone for a year and have no idea what has happened, I’m already gearing up to make a bunch of choices so I can fit all of that into whatever they have him do. You have to be really creative, and that’s kind of fun, figuring stuff out.

Chicago Magazine Article on Jeffrey Lieber: This article is interesting and just basically goes to show you that there are a ton of people out there making money off the hardwork of others. Lieber receives onscreen credit (and $$$) basically because he came up with the archetypes for some of the characters on the show. Beyond that, Lieber’s initial concept for Lost could not have been more different than what Abrams ultimately created and ran with.

I am all for contributors receiving credit (both artistically and monetarily), but this article gives the vibe that Lieber is somehow jaded by that particular experience. I cannot speak for everyone, but I would probably not be watching Lost if it were just some ramped up version of Castaway or Lord of the Flies (which is where Lieber planned to take it). The mythology of the show is what intrigues me most and keeps me tuned in. What about you?

Enjoy!

Cloverfield Project

In an effort to keep some of you Lost Bloggers engaged over the long haul of our “Lost” wait, J.J Abrams is at it again with his new Cloverfield Project movie. If you have seen Transformers, there was a special trailer attached to it and you can find it on YouTube and Google Video, but Paramount has been pretty big on preventing the rips from staying up too long.

Nevertheless, this is what I get from what I have been able to see:

*The movie is going to be in a “Blair Witch Project” type format, but much larger budget… Meaning, taken from a first-person camcorder perspective, but the special effects look pretty cool

*A number of people are deeming it “Godzilla” meets the BWP, but it is difficult to tell from the trailer what exactly is going on other than mass terror and destruction

There are a couple of websites to check out:

http://www.1-18-08.com - Not much here other than a terrified look on some faces

and then this site, which seems to be the first viral site for the movie in a TLE sort of vain

http://www.ethanhaaswasright.com/ - This is a flash-based, puzzle-filled site and I’m already somewhat addicted to trying to find the hidden videos. Basically, you figure out a puzzle and get another video, but I’ve only gotten one video deep at this point.

I know this is the Lost Blog, but this is a Abrams project and it is pretty cool, so let’s use this post to add any knowledge about the movie.

A late edit: http://ethanhaaswaswrong.blogspot.com/ seems to be a viral blog related to the Ethan Haas Was Right flash site.

Oceanic Flight 815

Here is your chance to own an exclusive piece of television history and help Artists for a new South Africa at the same time.

Charityfolks.com are auctioning a piece of the plane from the infamously doomed Oceanic Flight 815 from Lost signed by show creators J.J. Abrams & Damon Lindelof. This is the first piece of the wreckage ever to be privately owned.

The proceeds of the auction will go to Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA), which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating the African AIDS pandemic and advancing democracy and equality in South Africa. ANSA also works to further civil rights and safeguard voting rights in the U.S.

It should be noted that the part of the wreckage that is auctioned is not the one in the picture above. A photo of the auctioned piece of Lost plane wreckage can be seen here.

Lost creator to direct The Dark Tower

According to IGN, Lost co-creator JJ Abrams is going to direct a TV or Movie version of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower”:

Sources advised us that an official announcement is forthcoming. We have been unable to determine whether Dark Tower will be a film project or a TV miniseries, although the latter is a more likely prospect given the complex nature of King’s seven-book series. Given Abrams’ success on the small screen — and King’s well known love for the Abrams-produced TV series Lost — the tube seems a better fit for The Dark Tower. That said, IGN now has reason to believe the project will be for the big-screen.

They are also writing that recent rumors point to that JJ is only going to produce the upcoming Star Trek XI movie which he was previously rumored to be directing.

As we’ve previously reported, both JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse are fans of Stephen King’s work, and the horror writer himself is supposedly a big Lost fan so any future collaborations between the writers should be really interesting!

Thanks to Bill for the tip!

JJ Abrams not directing “Not in Portland”

I’ve previously written that the upcoming Lost episode “Not in Portland” had been directed by Lost co-creator JJ Abrams based on the information on IMBD. It turns out that JJ didn’t direct the episode after all.

According to ABC, the episode which was written by Carlton Cuse and Jeff Pinkner was directed by Lost veteran director Stephen Williams. Williams has directed some great episodes, like “Collision”, “Lockedown” and my recent favorite “Every Man for Himself”, so I’m sure “Not it Portland” will be a great episode.

Nevertheless, JJ said that he was going to be more involved this season and I know that I’m not the only one who will be a bit disappointed if he doesn’t keep his word so this is a bit sad to hear.

The short synopsis of “Not in Portland” was also published by ABC, so if you don’t mind some spoilers and can’t wait until next month to find out the premise of the first episode in the second half of Lost season 3, take a look over at ABC.

An evening with Lost - Questions and Theories

An Evening with Lost

During the “Evening with Lost” that took place the 13th, host Jimmy Kimmel was quite determined to get some exciting revelations from the Lost writers, but despite his little campaign, he couldn’t manage to make them reveal any big secrets.

Again - Since I was writing while I was watching the event, the quotes may not be exact but they should be pretty close to what was said.

Executive producer Carlton Cuse said that Lost would be a lot less interesting to watch if you had the mystery revealed to you and when Kimmel kept asking for revelations he laughingly replied:

“The entire show is taking place in the dog’s mind.”

Kimmel then asked if the writers had ever heard a Lost theory which was correct. Cuse answered:

“Not enough of the story has unfolded for people to get the whole thing. There is not one unifying theory.”

JJ Abrams also had a thing or two to say regarding the many mysteries:

“It is not just one thing happening on the island. It’s not Twin Peaks with everything leading to who murdered Laura Palmer. It’s the journey that matters, there are cool things to discover.”

In response to Kimmel’s requests for answers and revelations Damon Lindelof said that they answer things all the time, like what was in the hatch and what Kate did, but when they answer a question or mystery, the fans just want answers to other questions. He added that the minute that you give up what the island is the show is over.

A look at things to come

A few small revelations were made, and these are spoiler-ish, but since they come from the writers I think it’s alright. Carlton Cuse hinted at what we can expect when Lost returns next month:

We’re going to tell you how Locke got in his wheelchair and Jack’s tatoo’s will be explained.

If I remember correctly, Damon Lindelof also revealed that the Others either have or have had the ability to leave the island and he said that there is a specific reason why they didn’t bring a surgeon to the island or didn’t bring Ben to a surgeon. This, he said, will be explained within 6 or 7 episodes.

Kimmel also asked Damon about the connection between Lost and NBC’s “Heroes”. The Lost creator explained that he is friends with and used to work with “Heroes” creator Tim Kring, but that there is no official connection between the two shows. He added that it would be fun to have the Japanese time-bender Hiro pop up on the island though.

Cast Theories

When asked what the craziest Lost theory they had heard was, the cast had some amusing answers:

Michael Emerson - “Someone told me the island was the ruins of an alien zoo.”
Dominic Monaghan - “That the show was the dream of a duck.”
Jorge garcia - “The one where we were all cloned during the flight and the story was really about our clones.”

Jimmy Kimmel said that he had a theory that Desmond was the devil. Henry Ian Cusic who plays Desmond found that interesting and said that when he first played Desmond running on the stadium stairs with Jack, he thought that Desmond was an angel.

I’ve personally never thought of the possibility that Desmond could be an angel, and considering what we now know about him, he probably is not an angel, but I like the idea.

Kimmel then asked if Desmond knows more than everyone else. This was answered by Damon Lindelof who said that Desmond ended up being a massive mythological character on the show and discussed how the salvation of the losties could be in the hands of the “Romeo and Juliet” love story between Desmond and Penelope. He said that Desmond “marches to the beat of his own drummer” and that “what he knows is what he knows”, which basically meant that Desmond doesn’t know more than he is telling the other survivors.

These philosophical questions led Kimmel to ask Elizabeth Mitchell who plays Juliet if she knew if her character is good or evil. To which Elizabeth answered:

“No I don’t know. I think if you’re evil you think you’re good anyway.”

I think she was spot on with that answer as Ben has implied that the Others are “the good guys”. The big question is if we will think they are good or evil when we find out what they are really doing on the island…
