Yunjin Kim finds Sun too submissive

According to Contactmusic.com, Yunjin Kim finds it hard to portray the submissive Sun on Lost, who is the exact opposite of the character she became famous for playing.
“In Shiri it was a powerful La Femme Nikita type of role – a female sniper. I went as far as a brown-tipped belt in tae kwon do, but each school is very different as far as status of belts and colours is concerned, so it’s hard to explain what level I was at.
I’d already had dance training which meant I was flexible and good at remembering choreography, so I learned fast. I also did broadsword fighting and combat with a shorter sword.”
In a recent AP article, Yunjin talked a bit about her initial reaction to her character:
“I signed on before reading the script, and then when I read the pilot I was like, ‘Korean women are not like this any more. They are not so submissive. I cannot play a role like this. It does not represent Asian women in the right way,’ “
She discussed the matter with Lost co-creator JJ Abrams who assured her that not everything is what it seems.
“He explained that all the characters are archetypes, not stereotypes. They are going to seem to be a certain way, but along the way their true identities will be revealed,”
It’s interesting that Yunjin is a bit unhappy with Sun and I’m sure her character will continue to change and develop further. If we look at how both Sun and Jin have changed from the first episodes of season one to the last episodes of season two, the characters have grown and developed a lot.
Will Sun become a silent assassin in the third season of Lost? How do you think her character will develop?
