What happened to the Hanso Foundation site?

I was planning to write a post about The Hanso Foundation some days ago, but the Hanso site was offline, so I figured I would check back later. I’ve been checking the site several times today, and it is still offline.

After doing some research, I found that it might be possible that the site is down for maintainance.

Does anyone know what’s going on?

  1. I suspect they could be updating it in regards to tonight’s episode.

  2. The site still doesn’t load over here. I wonder if they are intentionally keeping it offline.. one would think they would have fixed the site by now if it was taken down due to server problems.

  3. I’ve seen references of the being offline as far back as October. When is the last time it is known for sure to have been up?

  4. Hi, I’m a web developer.

I noticed a while back that they were having problem with the images. They were trying to implement some form of anti-linking measure that would prevent people linking to the hidden images on the site from another web site.

It was clear that they are utter novices and had messed it up completely (Because they’d used a silly technique for displaying the images on their own site, they couldn’t tell whether an image was being viewed from the Dharma site or another site, hence the broken images all over the place.)

So if they want to allow images to be viewed from the site but also block them when linked from other sites then they’re going to have to rewrite the site.

That would take some time, especially so considering they appear utterly clueless!

  5. Hey guys. Never saw that site you are refering to, but was directed to this site on Monday 20th Feb 06. here is the address – http://www.bigspaceship.com/archive/hanso/ – is the Hanso Foundation.

  6. Good find Dousty!

Big Spaceship is the design agency that made the site by the way, just so no-one mixes it up and figures the island is a big spaceship, hehe.

  7. According to register.com, thehansofoundation.org is owned by ABC, Inc. The site is definitly a marketing toy and it’s downtime is an obvious attempt to torture us. All we want are answers! I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

  8. Been trying to access the hanso site for a while…..then i came across
    http://emri.perception.net/
    Its owned by disney too.

  9. Allan, the domain perception.net is not owned by Disney but by a Canadian interactive media company. I would say that that site is unofficial and made by a fan.

  10. It seems to me that the Hanso Foundation site is a legitimate site intended to supplement the show and was greenlighted by the creators of Lost to be made by Big Spaceship. Why would a multimedia company like that use any intellectual property from Lost to make a fake website? Sounds like something a crazy fan would do, but not something they would. Plus, the terms of use link on the bottom of the site takes you to ABC.

  11. Also, notice that the Big Spaceship link has the Hanso site under the subdirectory /archive? They must have been hired by JJ Abrams to make the site and they’re keeping the old one in the archive until the official site is finished being updated.

  12. Than So Lost, you are correct. The Hanso site is/was an official ABC site made to increase the interest in Lost.

Big Spaceship, which is a well known design agency, was indeed hired by ABC/Lost but probably not directly by JJ since I would assume he leaves that sort of thing to other people.

  13. Forgive me if I am rehashing previously discussed information, but has anyone else noticed the hidden info on the Hanso Foundation website? Using the bigspaceship.com link (the traditional Hanso Foundation address is still broken) and clicking on the picture of Alvar Hanso, a computer screen comes up and there is a brief exchange between an unknown person and someone calling himself “Mole.” After that, a letter with the sujbect line of “Hanso Life-Extension Project” appears.

  14. Never mind. I just realized that I “found” info that has been known since November of last year. Guess I should turn in my junior gumshoe badge. Sorry.

No worries HornHiYo. We still haven’t figured out who the mole is, provided that there is one. I belive it’s either Libby, Henry (pretty obvious) or maybe Michael now that he has come back.

  16. Is my memory going? I don’t recall seeing the polar bears and other experiments in the video they see on the island.

Was this added just to the hidden video of Dr. Lefty on the website or was it there to begin with and I just don’t remember it?

  17. The site is back online now – http://thehansofoundation.org/
However, the only thing on the site is the word “Namaste”.

I am willing to bet that the site will be updated while we are watching the new episode tomorrow and that it will play a part in the interactive Lost experience that is to be launched.

  18. I know people have mentioned the similarity between Adrian Veidt’s island in Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s comic book THE WATCHMEN and Hanso’s Dharma Initiative, but has anyone seen similarities between the Hanso Foundation and NERV the organization in the Anime NEON GENESIS: EVANGELION? That show also had a lot of interesting developments similar to LOST. It seemed to be one kind of show, the “boy and his robot,” but quickly became a very strange and mystical exploration of the Apocalypse described in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Has anyone considered the possibility that Hanso and the Dharma Initiative may be in some way trying to create or delay some sort of apocalyptic event? We assume that the world outside the island is still running along smoothly, but really we have no idea what could be happening “back home.”

  32. oceanic-air.com

also you can highlight the writing behind the whole thing (if you’re in a high resolution) and it says:

If anyone should find this message, please get word I’m alive and stranded on an island somewhere in the South Pacific. Please send help soon. Things are bad. And they’re getting worse…

when you reach this site highlight the words on the right and copy and paste into word. you get the messages from the survivors as well as a weird drawing of a guy in hospital with a birthday cake and another of the statue of liberty. no idea what this means but it was freaky to find
