This week’s Lost episode titled “Tricia Tanaka is Dead” is a story about Lost’s friendly multi-millionaire , Hurley. As we have learned though, Hurley’s past is quite mysterious – he seems to be cursed by the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42.
Tonight we will find out more about Hurley’s past, and on the island Kate and Sawyer, who have escaped from The Others, are heading back toward their friends on the beach.

Hurley’s discovery of an old, wrecked car on the island leads him on a mission of hope not only for himself, but for a fellow survivor in need of some faith. Meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer reunite with their fellow castaways, but Kate is still torn about leaving Jack behind with “The Others,” on “Lost,” WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

what was that??? a whole episode about starting a van and hurley past with his dad? worst episode of the year and maybe the whole series….very boring….looks like next week will be better, with eye patch guy coming back, but wow, what a major let down

It seems like the writers have changed!?!?!?!
it just seems so different from all the other episodes from the previous seasons. the characters don’t seem like “themselves” if you know what I mean…
I really enjoyed the past two seasons, and I want to be on the edge of my seat like I normally would watching Lost…

seems like i have been thinking this alot this season so far, but…..again a boring episode with no cliffhangers and no info about the last couple of years…this episode was about hurley…why didnt they do something with him in the psch. ward and seeing libby…i still want to know bout that. please we need SOME

i know…very boring episode indeed. have no patience to remember when a stupid ray of light displayed off of ecko’s cane…that was frigging ages ago. one explanation for the suckiness of the season: this is the first one I am watching not on DVD. could it be that the DVD versions are more exciting since you can easily forget about the crap episodes like this one?

Sure, it might not have been a shock-and-awe type of episode, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Obviously the theme was hope, something that the writers have touched on numerous times before in the series, and I think they presented this episode as a way of giving hope not only to the losties, but also to the viewers.
I’d say everyone who has posted before me needs a little hope restorted in Lost. I for one still have plenty and I excitedly look forward to the rest of this season, and more to come.

Loved it. Back to the first-season feel. Sawyer was back to form, and it was good to see Hurley and Charlie back in action. They’ve needed an episode like this all season.

You guys need to lighten up! That was my favorite episode of this season! Hurley is happy again, I thought everyone would enjoy this episode like me, but i was wrong! It was great to be back with the old crew again, and not see any of Jack. If you think about it there were plenty of episodes in the last two seasons that didnt have huge cliffhangers in them, this episode was about Hurley, and I enjoyed watching an episode my dude Hurley. It also questions whether Charlie is going to die, or whether he can take his fate into his own hands, and it questions Hurley’s curse. I agree you guys must be running low on hope!

You know, usually when a episode airs that I think is mediocre I go on this site and see people who said they liked it and am kind of disgusted. But this time around I gotta agree with them: it was a pretty good episode. I liked how they just threw the Easter eggs in our face and discarded them just as quickly: the blueprints, the paper with the writing on it next to the driver corpse . . . I literally had no expectations for this one since last week’s wasn’t so great, but I liked it. And Cheech as Hurley’s dad? How is that not awesome?
The promise of what’s in next week’s episode is basically what has kept me from tuning out for the past couple of weeks, and the preview didn’t disappoint at all. I’m excited.

Wow, You guys didn’t like this episode? Sure, I love the mythology and story progressing — which, admittedly, it didn’t do much of this week… but come on. Seriously. This was a funny, heartfelt, breezy episode. NEXT week we’ll go insane again. This was refreshing for Lost, though, at least in my opinion.

Man i loved this episode it was so great seeing hurley out and about again. As far as all of ya saying “omg so boring nothing happened” i bet your the same ones saying “omg theres too much goin on they need to give us answers!1!”. This season is the midway point of the series and its basically here to fill in some of the minor blanks and develop the characters a bit more. Sure I would love if every episode was filled with tons of mystery and edge of your seat stuff but i also understand the need to work the character’s and let you know more about them. Again i thought this was a great episode and further solidifies me as a hurley fan. To all of ya that said this episode sucks watch it again and take it for what it is, a great feel good episode that’s supposed to make you smile.

Apparently ya didnt watch much of the episode cause the whole hurley got fat bit that ya say the whole show was about was maybe the first 3 mins. It was all about his dad and his relationship and why he still, til tonight at least it seemed, cursed.

What fun! Don’t you just love Hurley? It was so nice to have a light episode and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sawyer was classic, schooling Jin, taking all the beer and drinking with Skeletor. I think the show needs episodes like these to keep it all balanced.

Fantastic episode! some of you viewers should watch lost in space re-runs. This was so well written and I’m sorry you couldn’t see it.
The writers on this episode won awards last season and Kudos to them for this one! I loved it. Chicken shack scene was funny and
look forward to more! If you didn’t like this
your not a LOST fan but a tv land viewer. Keep up the great job ,love the show.

Hmmmm…I’m surprised (well not that surprised I guess) that people hated this episode so much. I liked it a lot.
cazzie mentioned the lack of a cliffhanger and I think other people feel the same way, but I’m not sure why it is expected that every episode have a cliffhanger. In fact, if the writers made a point of making each episode end in a cliffhanger, that concept itself would get boring, and would certainly prompt complaints like “this cliffhanger wasn’t as good as last week’s cliffhanger, so this episode sucked”. But aside from that, the end of this episode DID set up future storylines (the hunt for Jack and Alex).
To ecko – I agree totally that watching the show on DVD is more exciting – it eliminates the frustration of not getting answers quick enough. But that doesn’t mean the show sucks because you have to wait week to week (or for 3 months between episodes 6 & 7). And I have to say, the ray of light on Eko’s cane was not ages ago – it was only a few days ago, island time, but aside from that, each episode makes allusions to earlier episodes, all the way back to the pilot so that was certainly not an obscure reference by Sayid. BTW, I believe Sayid was mocking Locke with that comment.
I think this week’s flashbacks worked much better than last week’s – it further emphasized how Hurley feels cursed and how that affects his life. And to me, the bit at the end with him getting the van started was symbolic of breaking the curse, so perhaps that aspect of the storyline will be done with. I kind of hope so – I’d hate to think they might beat that theme to death and we end up not liking Hurley because of it (kind of like they’ve done with Jack and his need to fix things).
Another thing I think this episode achieved was respond to critics complaints that the losties don’t talk to each other. Earlier this season, people complained that people didn’t ask Hurley enough questions about where Jack,Kate and Sawyer were, and that Hurley didn’t go around and tell everyone about what happened. Well, in the scene at Libby’s grave, I think it was made clear that those conversations occurred, in some fashion, but we didn’t get to see them. Just like the writers have said – the show would get pretty boring if they showed all the conversations in which one characters explains to other characters what just happened to them.
A few other thoughts…..
When Vincent showed up with the arm with the key, I first thought that was Desmond’s. And that made sense to me because how could Des have survived essentially unharmed an implosion/explosion that was strong enough to send the hatch door way so far?
I liked the bit with Sawyer teaching Jin the 3 important things to say to your wife, especially after that scene where he blew off Kate’s request that he say he’s sorry.
One fear I have – I hope Kate, in her search for Jack, doesn’t end up as annoying as Michael was in his search for Walt.

First of all I like to say that this blog is really awesome, maybe the best LOST website of all. About the episode, I think it was one of the best so far of the third season, simply because we returned to old characters and were just able to relax and sit back for a while, while laughing about Sawyer drinking with Mr. Roger and giving Jin english lessons. And Hurley is always win, maybe hes even the one who will probably rescue all losties. I mean, when one person has the power to do so then he does, ironically.
Also I was glad to see Sayid and Locke back to action again, that looks promising and I hope that they (authors) don’t kill Charlie, that would really be bad.

Okay.. so I thought that it was great! I always love Hurley episodes.. they are light hearted and fun. I think thats what we needed after all the heavy drama laden episodes of recent.
Okay.. one question though(it should make you laugh)
When they were pushing the van to the top of the hill, why in the world was Hurley the one inside?
I just thought it was funny. Oh no no.. dont put little skinny Charlie in there to manuver it to the top of the hill… lets put Hugo!
Did anyone else wonder how Rodger died? I mean, ok its a little odd for someone to die ‘on a beer run’.

It seems to me they use dead “others” to get the point across that people are expendable to the project. I didn’t think that it was odd that he died on a beer run. It was more weird that they never found him. They just let a van and a guy “disappear” on the island?

Anyone else wonder why no one ever seems to have tried to find or save these random people rotten and dead that the Losties keep finding in the jungle?
I would think someone would have tried to find “Roger” way before Hurley came upon him.

I think this episode was sort of the show coming up for air before it plunges down into the seriousness that everyone wants. I don’t know, a little lightheartedness every now and then is good, I think.

I don’t see how anyone could have disliked this episode. Our crew was laughing and stoked on the story through the entire hour. I guess there are people that are going to complain no matter what, but this episode wasn’t boring to me at all. These people are probably not going to enjoy an episode no matter what happens that particular week. Lighten up and have some fun once in a while.

People are really hard to please. Didn’t everyone want to get back to the beach, back to the feel of the first season? This one was funny, a little self-contained adventure, and we got to see a bigger cast of characters than we have in a while. I’m especially glad that we got to catch up with Locke and Sayid, with more to come (looks like) next week.
Also, back to missions! Go A-team! (minus Jack)

I loved the show! Finally–Hurley is back and I loved his “Red…Neck…Man” remark to Sawyer. It was nice to see Hurley take charge of the situation. I was especially glad to get away from the doom/gloom and actually get to laugh with the characters.
Next week looks awesome!

This was a fantastic episode. If you are seeking the “answers” to the entire series every episode, you are going to be perpetually disappointed. Admittedly, “Stranger in a Strange Land” was probably the poorest Lost ep of the series — but NOT b/c they didn’t reveal every LOST secret there is, but b/c the writing was poor, and the story line was dull. However, this episode was hilarious, and really featured some amazing writing. The interaction b/w Sawyer/Hurley/Jin/Charlie was natural and not forced as it was last week in Jack’s episode. It was a well needed break from The Others too. Not only that, but the ep advanced at least 5 storylines simultaneously: (1) Hurley, his past and the numbers, (2) Kate and Sawyer’s love/hate relationship and return to the camp, (3) Charlie’s Desmond-death sentence, (4) the losties finally mounting an effort to save Jack, and (5) Rousseau and her quest to be reunited with her daughter Alex. Well-done. It’s no secret that each episode has different writers. Last week’s writers should revaluate what they are doing, and this week’s should be commended. Hopefully, the ratings were good for this great episode.
It seems some people wish that there would be one single Lost episode where they would explain every single mystery on the show, and then that would be that. This would be the worst Lost episode of all time and would destroy the show. No one cared about Twin Peaks after they revealed Laura Palmer’s killer. The writers prematurely revealed that secret under pressure from network execs. Hopefully LOST doesn’t suffer the same fate due to over-demanding fans who just can’t sit back and enjoy the show.

I liked this episode! I’m with those who say the needed a break from the other drama/love triangle. This was perfect. I’m pretty sure I would think I was cursed too, if a meteorite landed on my Mr. Clucks.

What’s to prevent people who work for the show from adding comments to spin a bad episode?
Here, I could sit down and write the rest of this season in one minute:
Season ends with Kate finding Jack who says that he wants to stay with the Others, get lovey dovey with Juliette, and says that he doesn’t want to go back to the beach. He needs to find out more about Dharma. Sun has a baby with 4 toes.
Introduce new members of the island (like last night), and kill them off in various creative ways. Although, I’d probably kill off Hurley, just to erase the bad luck. Alternate good episodes with touchy-feely ones. Flashback to more about Sawyer and his girlfriends, Kate and her boyfriends, Des and Penny, etc. Have Vincent start talking to Charlie, advising him on how to stay alive. Have Jin discover a pot farm in the jungle, and he becomes a rastafarian. Locke discovers a collection of DVDs from the 25th season of “24,” and realizes that the Losties are in the future. While Claire is roaming through the jungle, she finds an old, abandoned KFC filled with Dharma rats. The rats reveal the secret that the C doesn’t stand for chicken.
This series has complete jumped the shark, and the more they can pad the story, the more ABC makes.

This was the first yawn-er in a very very log time. The only interesting thing is the map Sawyer found in the van. Could mean a much bigger “Othersville” complex than we think.
Background about the characters, especially Hurley, is good. But we’ve seen his rags-to-riches background and bad luck before. No real eye openers.
PS- In reference to the beer smelling/tasting bad, there’s a Stephen King short story called “Gray Matters” in which a guy drinks bad beer then transforms into a monster. He knows it’s bad when he opens it (doesn’t know what it will do to him) but drinks it anyway ’cause beer is beer. I don’t think Sawyer or Jing are going to becomer monsters. But I think it could be another nod reference to King stories.

Wow, I cannot BELIEVE people didn’t like this episode! If this wasn’t the LOST you love, then what the hell is???
First off, it was friggin’ hilarious!!! Sawyer’s abbreviation of “Little House” is easily the most humiliating and endearing moment of his entire time on the island. And what could be more quintessentially Hurley than the line, “Let’s look death in the face and say, ‘Whatever, man!’”
For those who think this episode didn’t advance the mythology or larger themes of the show, I really have to disagree. Sure, there wasn’t a wild twist and a cliffhanger, but it added a whole new layer to the determinism/free will struggle. And what is our official count on the members of the Daddy Issues Club? Locke, Jack, Sawyer, Walt, Shannon, Sun, Penelope/Desmond, Kate, Charlie, Alex, now Hurley . . . Am I missing anyone? And don’t you think the DHARMA stuff was interesting? I mean, it’s one thing to have DHARMA rations of mac ‘n’ cheese or granola bars–but BEER? The DHARMA workers had their names on their uniforms, they drove a hippie bus, they had beer . . . I just thought these details painted a portrait of something less sinister, more human. It made me even more excited to learn what they were up to.
The more I read these Web sites, the less I understand WHAT ON EARTH people want from the show. I don’t think it’s wrong to voice your opinions; I just think don’t think ANYTHING would please you at this point. I hope the network ignores the whining, stops running overly dramatic promos, and stays out of the way while the producers keep making the best show on television.

My observations:
1. I loved this episode!!!!! It was very entertaining and brought back all of the great characters! I missed Sayid and Locke and Hurley and Charlie, etc.
2. They need to kill off that new annoying couple ASAP. They drive me insane.
3. I am so glad Rousseau is back! She is awesome. Do you think she thought her daughter was dead?
4. I am glad the Sawyer that I love is back…enough with the love story of “James and Freckles.” Sawyer and Kate are back…notice the transformation once they got “home.” Love it!
Overall, I loved this episode. I love Hurley’s history and it was a nice, light episode but did also bring intrigue and mystery. It was so great to see the beach family again! After last week, this episode made me exclaim “Lost is back!!!” Woo hoo!

Hammer: why are ratings dropping?
Besides, my opinion is justified because I’ve seen every episode, and most more than once.
I’m beginning to think that since Jack has never been curious about any aspect of the island–never asked a question, or propose a theory–he’s known about the Dharma Initiative and the island since before the plane crash. If this isn’t so, that I’d say his character is badly written.

When I first found this blog, it seemed all of the comments were about what happened and discussion on clues to what it going on. The “arguements” were about theory. Now…every Thursday, we have to endure comment after comment on how much someone hates the show and the people who like the show are spending time defending it instead of helping to analyze it.
Let’s be more strict on the “no complaining rule”…if you’re not going to watch Lost anymore…move on.

Here are a few questions. Vans need gasoline: where did Dharma get that? Vans need roads: might the Losties follow the overgrown “road” backwards to see where the van might have originated? Was the dart in Sawyer’s foot just random or might it hold a clue?

Some earlier comments complained that it doesn’t make sense for the Dharma initiative to just leave some dead guy out in a van with some beer–why haven’t they found him?
This may actually be a mythology question rather than a episode gripe. From what we’ve seen of Desmond’s experiences in the hatch and the dead bodies in the polar bear cave, the Dharma Initiative ended in a kind of shambles. The Others do not equal the Dharma Initiative. Is it possible that there was another incident, maybe an experiment went wrong, and most everybody on the initiative died? Is that why some dude on a beer run died and was never found?

First, the series now seems to be written to 2 tiers: those who know the full story from the beginning and those who are either casual or new viewers. The episodes seem to alternate depending upon which viewership they want to reach. Does anyone on the island wonder if Michael and Walt returned to the real world, and might report the existence of the island? You could assume that since he did shoot Ana Lucia and Libby, he would want to keep it a secret. But is this done so that the new viewers are not confused?
Second, who thought of putting a curly wig on Cheech Marin to try to make him look younger and assure us he was Hurley’s pa? Was he trying to look like the father on the brady bunch (or a chia pet) since that was mentioned last week?
Third, regarding the dart in Sawyer’s foot. How many episodes are there where he *isn’t* beaten, stabbed, shot or suffering from a fever? Still, he always looks like he just had a makeover. Wouldn’t he at least be missing some teeth or have some facial scars or walk with a limp?

Now that Hurley knows Michael killed Libby I woudl think he’d be very angry even vengful about it. He seems to have taken that pretty calmly. Jack, Kate and Sawyer too. Really out of character IMO that Sawyer should take Michael’s murder of Libby and Anna so matter-of-factly. He may not have loyalties but he does have an odd code of honor about such things.

Someone mentioned earlier that Sawyer and Kate have reverted back to their old behavior habbits now that they are back on the main island. Maybe this is a lead into what Ben really did to Kate after breakfast.

MasterPo: You’d think everyone on the island would be anxious about people walking around with guns and knives after what Michael did.
How do they know the Kate and Sawyer weren’t brainwashed and sent back to spy on the Losties? After all, Michael did their bidding.
My basic contention is that Lost would have worked out better as a 2-season, or 3-season at most, series. All these extra episodes reveal deficiencies such as why aren’t the Losties actively asking questions about the island?
As a study of human nature, it’s getting pretty wobbly.

Nice song analysis, Bill. Also lovely foreboding since Roger died ‘on the road to Shambala.’ I agree it’s going to be very interesting to find out why all these corpses were left strewn about. Maybe there really was a toxin in the air at some point on the island.
They’ve set us up but good, I say, in the last two episodes. From the starcrossed lovers (Carl/Alex, Kate/Sawyer, Reluctant-Romeo-Jack/Juliet) to Jack’s acceptance of his leadership role to a sense of hope underscored by elements of foreboding (Sawyer’s dart, Danielle shooting at the rescuers, Roger)…it’s gonna be a wild ride!!!

How many more empty episodes do I have to suffer through? To wait a week for more Hurley flashbacks and jump-starting a wrecked van is an insult. Especially when the commercial teasers promised “answers!” Wooooo – what answers did we get last night? If the writers and producers aren’t stretching out a show that should have been 3 seasons long at best – what are they doing? For every new character that gets introduced, we’re gauranteed more flashbacks with more questions while the rest of the cast sits on the beach eating their Dharma rations – happily! Take a cue from some of the other shows on televison that don’t string their loyal viewers along because they’re greedy and lazy. I’m Lost! You’ve lost a fan and viewer.

OK yes the episode was not as good as the other ones; however I believe it made a point. The island is different to everyone. What the island has done for each castaway is different. Last night it was Hurley’s turn to realize what the island has done for him. It seems as if whatever problems the losties have the island can fix it whether it be Locks legs or Roses’ health (WHERE IS SHE?) Now its Hurley’s luck.

Brandon – I wouldn’t say Hurley’s bad luck streak is broken. Just that he got the car going. IMO it’s definately not clear that the island fixed his luck.
OTOH, that theory does lead into the concept that the reality they are in is at least in part controlled by thier own thoughts. There is great sci-fi precidence for this. In the classic Star Trek episode “Shore Leave” the crew is on the ‘amusement park’ planet where whatever they think of is made for them on the spot.
ps- I didn’t understand Sayid’s explanation for using Eko’s stick to take a compass bearing to follow Kate. Sounded like a load of BS (he was even smiling when he said it). Was he just trying to cover that they followed Kate? Or was he serious?

I wasn’t terribly impressed by the episode except for the “Red. Neck. Man” comment which was hilarious so I’m really glad I stopped by this posting. I’m glad that so many people were able to pull out some interesting bits in the episode. The character interactions were really nice and the “daddy issues” list is great. The song thing is interesting. I only recognized it as the same one that was playing in his flashback. Nice analyses everyone. The complaining and bickering on here is just childish and pointless so let’s try to keep it constructive.

wow, everyone is so up in arms about this episode! i personally think it was a good one (not on the scale of ‘Flashes..’, but good). the reason i’m confused about a lot of the comments is because a lot of people seem to be asking, “why don’t they ask more questions?”… i mean, with the exception of Jack (who actually did ask what was going on when he was first brought to that camp, not that anyone would tell him anything), who are people going to ask? claire can ask charlie what the dharma thing means a hundred times, but that doesn’t mean he’ll have an answer. Desmond was actively working on what was left of the project and he doesn’t even know what’s going on. most of the losties didn’t even see the hatch or anything, all they really have is the food which is mildly suspicious, but not an answerable question by anyone there.
as for Luke’s question, Vincent has been on the island and Walt and Michael are trying to escape on a boat. it’s only been about a week or two since they left though, so don’t get too worried yet… we’ll see them again.

Sawyer mentioned that the van appeared to be full of recycled materials. I am interested in what that mmight be. Do I recall it looked pink? And the lucky rabbit’s foot…lucky for Hurley but not for Roger. The designation of “Work Man” seemed a little weird. Was he the island’s janitor? Didn’t the guy look mummified? In fact, Eko’s brother and some of the other bodies have looked that way too. Someone above mentioned that perhaps an incident wiped out the Dharma folks. I am beginning to think that the state of these bodies is a clue. Otherwise wouldn’t they just be bones? And perhaps that is why no one was looking for anyone, because everyone died! Nice tidbit regarding King’s bad beer story.

if you get on to “watch with kristen” on eonline.com she has excellent interviews with damon and carlton. one such interview tells us that they had to cut a scene out of the episode where kate’s wrists were damaged that showed kate trying to escape from the handcuffs in the locker room post-ben breakfast. i would highly recommend checking out kirsten veatch’s episode recaps and interviews anytime after the latest episode–they’re always very insightful.

I did like this show, seem to like all of the Hurley flashbacks (“Dave” is also a fav). Character creation is a huge part of the draw for this show, so to have episodes like this one to setup questions/cliffhangers are important too.
When I watch, I look for things that flash by without giving answers. Those are likely directions for the show to go. Some flashes from this eppisode include:
Road Blueprint map
Recycled paper
Hurley’s List
The Blueprint doesn’t show much, other than a possible road. But the writers went into zero detail about this blueprint, so expect it to come up again later.
The recycled paper looks funny. On the still frame, it wasn’t newspapers or regular paper, they were crumpled up and looked like they had holes punched with a pencil in them. Maybe somebody else got a closer look?
Hurley’s list is a recurring theme with him. When he lists off the things that have gone wrong since he won the lottery, he tells us a bunch of things we already knew, and one thing we didn’t. The previous list included “meteor blew up Mr. Cluck’s”, which we didn’t know about until the Tanaka episode. The list last night included something about his friend stealing Starla away, which unless I’m mistaken, is something we don’t know about yet. Probable next flashback.
Best line of the show:
“It’s been 17 years, I have needs”
Plays on the Catholic theme, no divorce, hasn’t been with a man since Cheech left.
(All of the Sawyerisms were classics last night too. Guess I’m not the only one calling it “Little House”.)
Questions
Why no Benry flashbacks? Will we have them?
Hurley’s best friend is Randy Nation. Why do I get the feeling that name is relevant, like Ethan Rom (Other Man)?
Why are all of the bodies found on the island mummified….except for the slaves on the Black Rock? Those are just bones.
Did the island “heal” the VW like it healed Rose (cancer), Locke (paralysis/leg) and Jin (impotency)?
Anybody else notice Kate calling Sawyer “John” until they got close to camp? Then she started calling him Sawyer again. It seems that John/Freckles will be for their quiet moments and Sawywer/Kate for their public appearance.
The more I watch and rewatch the show, I think the answers are with Hurley somehow. He’s going to be the one that eventually figures it out and saves everybody.

BUT I think you’re right, maybe an experiment gone wrong or perhaps some kind of wave of electromagnetic activity that obliterated everyone in a foul swipe. I guess I thought we already knew that the initial Dharma group was a separate group from the Others.
The couple found long dead in the cave; the state of the bunkers; Juliet’s remark about Dharma ["that was a long time ago"]. Maybe I’m mistaken. But, the additional long dead body in the van supports an idea that the initial Dharma group may have all died around the same time.
Ben has been there all his life and I would guess he was born in the 60s or early 70s. The Others may be a conglomeration of Dharma children (experiments?) and people later brought in to continue the work (doctors, scientists etc). Nothing new in that theory.
BTW I loved this episode. Big on heart. I love Hurley, he is a ray of light in a dismal situation. How does YOUR light shine? ; >

Just kidding. But seriously, I do have a few minor problems with our Losties now. They have been on the island how long now? And you always see them fixing some tarp with a piece of rope. You think by now they would have managed to build some kind of decent shelter. They have not seen anyone from the outside world or any sign of it. They have to be thinking that this might be a long time deal. I would expect them to start doing the “Survivor Misterious Island” thing- building, fishing, farming, make a descent bed, etc. Instead you only see them hang out on the beach and do nothing to improve their living situation. Am I the only one who is bothered by this?

Again Tricia Tanaka was a great episode and The third season is great too. maybe the island is outside of spacetime–maybe the flashbacks are characters actually traveling time–maybe now desmond has the ability to recognize this. the electro magnetic mystery could have been the gateway device. because whatever allowed this blew up all over him! an open gateway would explain how some things seem to have been brought back-kate’s horse eko’s brother. the dart sawyer stepped on could have been from the pub desmond was in. i know this is a tangential thought i just think of english pubs when i think of darts. i’m also pretty sure desmonds going to “travel back” once more to let penny know what to look for and when.

I don’t know if anyone else agrees with me on this, but the scene with Cheech and Hurley at the fortune teller was a little strange. Cheech must’ve paid her over $1000 (but he doesn’t have any money!), because she wouldn’t tell the truth until she was offered $10,000.
I think this was supposed to be comedy. Most flashbacks seem pretty serious–a kidney transplanted under dubious circumstances, or the drunk old man gettin’ all blowed up–but this was like a sitcom.

some things I still wonder about.
where is the Monster? the black smoke or the Giant Mecha-godzilla sounding thing? first season they couldnt go 200 feet without a scare now they can amble about where they please.
That Beechcraft simply does not have the legs to go from nigeria to the south pacific nor corss the indian or atlantic ocean even if you turned it into a flying gas can.
Why do the others all have old weapons. AK47’s while still in use are pretty old.. SKS are also old.. and in season one and 2 I swear Mr Friendly and few others had walther P-38s and lugers for sidearms.. all of these weapons are 40’s-50’s vintage. while the Hatch had everything from sks/ak47 to new H&K and Sig sidearms and in one episode Locke was cleaning a HK long rifle with a scope easily 80’s vintage if not newer.

Great episode! I laughed out loud several times, and that means something since I was trying to be quite for people in the next room. I think the complainers in this forum and of Lost in general lately, are just lacking in an attention span. Why can’t you just enjoy the ride? Does everything have to resolve immediately for you to be happy? What you don’t realize is that your murmuring in itself is likely going to rush the writers, thus hurting the show, thus causing rumors of actors leaving etc. All people seem to be saying is “where’s the answers, where’s the cliffhangers?!” Maybe take some ADD medication and relax. It’s stories like this one that help round out the reality of the show and enhance our connection with the characters. I for one, found it to be heart-warming to see ‘the guys’ driving around in the van laughing, seeing Sawyer forget about his selfish anger with Hurley because of being welcomed back, Jin learning important husband phrases in English. These were all great scenes. No cliffhangers? What about the upcoming rescue mission to the others camp, with French lady’s help? What do you want already? Great episode. Fun to see Cheech as Hurley’s dad. Hey writers and actors, you are doing a wonderful job. Please try not to kill Charlie though, okay? :-)

Bill K – You raise some good points in comment #58 (“You’d think everyone on the island would be anxious about people walking around with guns and knives after what Michael did. How do they know the Kate and Sawyer weren’t brainwashed and sent back to spy on the Losties?). I can see some of the people reacting as they did on the show, happy to see them return, but I would expect at least a few people to be more suspicious of them after all that happened. Also, I wouldn’t expect the reunion to be all smiles and hugs – you’d think that people would ask “Where’s Jack?†and that would put a damper on the celebration. And I agree with your contention that Lost may have worked better if there was a predetermined period of time for how long the show would last.
But neither of these issues stop me from enjoying the show as is.
Regarding the scene with the fortune teller (your comment #92), I think you’re right when you say it was just supposed to be for comedic purposes. Hurley’s flashbacks have always had a good amount of humor mixed in with the serious stuff, like the Dave episode. In this week’s episode, there were still some serious aspects (about his father leaving the family, the curse, and the “making your own luck†theme), but there were a lot of funny parts too. Even the meteor hitting Mr. Cluck’s had a humorous aspect to it.

I think Sayid was completely mocking Locke in that final scene. In the first 6 episodes of this season, Locke was back into the whole “island will tell us what to do†mentality. So when he saw that quote on Eko’s stick (“lift up your eyes and look north†or something like that), he took that as an instruction on how to find Jack. Sayid probably thought Locke was crazy for believing stuff like that, but he didn’t have much else to go by (plus, his first attempt at trying to help out Jack/Kate/Sawyer when they went to see the Others didn’t work out so well), so he went along.
Also, I interpreted the car starting as a sign that Hurley’s curse is over. Like you said it’s not clear, but that’s my take.

That line came up again in the season 2 finale, during Desmond’s flashback. After Des landed on the island, and Kelvin rescued him, Kelvin asked Des that exact question. It was never stated explicitly in the show, but I think that was how a Dharma team in the Swan Station would know that someone was their replacements. Also in that same episode, after Desmond ended up back on the island, Locke asked Desmond what the answer to the question was.

Hey Andreas, great site! This is probably where the lost writers get all their storylines.
How nice was it to have an episode without Jack(he gets right on my tits!((English colloquialism)). If you were Jack wouldn’t you have demanded some answers in return for saving Ben’s life?
I think that i speak for most people when i say that the show should only run for 1 more season. that gives the writers 40 more shows to explain what is happening and why;(40 shows =28 hours of continuous footage!). Any more than this will make most viewers turn off. Here in the UK we have seen a 55% reduction in viewers since season 2 – partly due to it only being available on cable for season 3 and partly due to us Brits being very impatient.
The show will probably end in true Truman Show style with the others turning out to be TV crew and actors and the Losties being some unwitting reality TV show cast. I hope i am so wrong!

I for one will be pissed off if the show gets shortened and the writers have to scrap any of their long-term plans just to please you impatient people.
How annoyed would you be if the show got cancelled and they couldn’t wrap up all the storylines the way they might have planned? or in a worst case scenario the show gets cut and they don’t get to wrap up any storylines?
This is a show that is meant to build its entire mythology slowly and force you to wonder what they could possibly be building up to. That’s the reason this show became so huge. It’s because of this slow-burn mystery, something very few shows have been able to do.
If you want a show that has a start and finish in every episode go and watch a cop show. Then you’ll get all the answers you’ll ever need.
Sorry to those people that come here to read ideas and theories about the show, but I’ve had enough of people actually wasting their own time to come and a write shit about a show they don’t even like. And sadly the only way to fight negativity is with negativity.

This blog is great. I only found it a couple of days ago and I haven’t stopped reading. I’m intrigued at the various comments and speculations of the show. Has anyone developed a timeline marking the major events and days past?
After this last episode I have a couple of observations. Hurley starts chasing after Vincent from the beach. After a run through the jungle (and man can Hurley run) he finds the van, which happens to be at the top of a hill.
Charlie states he’s not going after Vincent because of the unknown in the jungle. Maybe we should see more of this ‘unknown’ for the reason the rest of the losties are content with just staying on the beach and not exploring the island.

I agree with you destroyer of worlds whole heartedly, Its annoying, there are some people here that are especially bugging the shit out of me. Seriously what the hell do they know. Anyways enter 77 is going to be awesome, oh yeah and I like that comment above whoever said about there being 108 total episodes thats a good one. hopefully next week we will get less bitchers and know-it-alls.

I agree with everyone who is tired of complaining. I read this blog because I am a Lost freak and I like to hear different theories. Hurley’s episode was great! If this show doesn’t have character developement, it’s not a show, it’s a make-believe documentary. Cheech makes anything better. Also for you complainers, even if Lost is the best show ever, it is still just a show. It’s not real. Shut up and enjoy it! I love this site!

Regarding the van itself:
- The van has to be 25+ years old at least. Besides the model, that was an 8-track tape playing the music. Those went out in the late 70’s!
- I agree the fuel would have leaked out or evaporated by now. Even if some remained, it would have seperated and gone bad.
Then there’s all the other fluids of a car: brake fluid, transmission fluid, engine oil etc.
- All the rubber on the van would have disintergrated in a jungle environment by now. The tires, the belts, the seats, the wires etc.
- Even if they didn’t get the van started I don’t see why Hurley couldn’t have steered around the rocks anyway. Not like the wheels were locked.
Overall though, I can over look all that for a decent plot.

What if the van is powered by an alternative source, i.e. recycled paper? The brakes, tires, and beers were all good to go thanks to the recuperative powers of the island.

Oh come on, it’s still television. Many events were based on impossibilities in real life. You know, the usual, bad guys can’t shoot good guys, fantasy creature pounding a man to death, when CPR fails just punch the patient in the chest real hard, get shot then get an infection then get completely healthy all in a few days, etc.
Lost makes it were we can’t tell if it’s just TV magic or if it’s going to be part of the plot.
It’s always about the plot…and this plot is awesome.

Alrighty, what does a defector who is hauling trash bring with them when they are stuck on an island. A map of the road system, maybe some notes as to where food drops will be or water sources, and a crap load of beer. eh? whuddyea think about that one?

Jocco – Serious or not, you may have stubbled onto something. Rubber, paper etc. are organic in origin. Even gasoline.
Maybe something about the island slows down the decomposition of organic things?
The van driver was in very good shape considering he was left in the open in a hot and wet tropical jungle environment. Same with all the other bodies we’ve seen.
OTOH, it didn’t keep the beer from going bad. ;-)

More to the point, Jin said he couldn’t get the van going, but Hurley did, on faith.
And to heck with all these naysayers. I just rewatched the episode on abc.com and I found it entertaining and funny, and it reminded me of the first season, when I cared for the characters, there were no Others, and I didn’t have a lot of high expectations.

I see and feel Lost does have ‘loose ends’ even though I like the show. Then again I can’t always be pleased and shouldn’t expect perfection.

I agree that all of the negative ‘I’ll get back at you for not giving me what I want’ styled energy directed at Lost is really sad.
I read this blog mostly because of the strict ‘no spoilers’ stance which fits with the way I like to watch Lost. I don’t often read the comments due to the large amount of negativity that seems to lurk around here and many other Lost communities.
The ironic thing is that a lot of these people who apparently care so little for Lost that they are ready to declare their withdrawal from the ratings pool, still take the time to let everyone know they are doing so.
You would think that visiting a site that has a No Spoiler policy, you would find people who are more patient and less ‘Answers’ focused and more ‘Experience’ oriented.
Really it’s simple. If you don’t enjoy watching Lost, don’t watch it. If you enjoy watching Lost but can’t handle not having any control over the way it makes you feel, then this is indicative of something you need to learn emotionally, not of a problem with Lost.
In all fairness, I can see how the promos might generate a lot of resentment with their constant attempts to exploit viewers interest in the show by trying to reduce it down to a simple question, answers game. Really what kind of program would it be if it was anything like the Promos try to portray. JJ could sit in a chair in front of a fireplace reading from a book? New plot elements could be introduced as a statement followed by a question. The following episode could be the corresponding answers. What a boring load of poop that would be!
Seriously though, as far as TV goes, I think you would have to be pretty complacent to not want to watch Lost anymore because it isn’t exactlty the way you would like it. The truth is I seriously doubt anyone who criticises Lost’s formula would be able to conceive a long running TV show anywhere near as brilliant as this show is..
I am fearful of the day when Lost will be but a memory, a collection of DVDs, a legend of TV, a word used to signify greatness. Lets not try and wish this time to come too quickly and just savour it while it lasts!
Mmmmm, a new Lost every week, it’s too good to be true!

Regarding the negativity and critique, I’m going to be a bit stricter from now on. You are still allowed to dislike an episode, but unless you really want to discuss why you disliked it in an intelligent way, it’s better for all of us if you keep it to yourself.
Also, guys, don’t discuss with those who post useless comments, because in turn, you are posting a negative comment and then things go into a negative spiral.

Can we take a closer look at the map? If you take a screen shot, there are some interesting things. The “road” seems to hair-pin down geographic elevation lines (as a road on a mountain would) but then cuts straight across the elevation lines at the bottom left of the map – is this a tunnel?
- Are they land elevation lines or under water geography?
- What area (station?) is the drawing at the bottom right?
- What is the table in the middle of the map with the number 45-290 under it?
-Is that a W; a VV or a symbol (resistor?) after 45-290?
I need somebody smarter than me to think on this!

It looks like a blueprint of the swan station on a contour elevation map. My guess is the numbers are elevation readings (i.e. x amount above sea level)
Maybe a tunnel because it looks like it goes inside the ground plan for the Swan Station, although the map in the pic is bent at that point so it isn’t entirely obvious if it stops or actually conects.
But my guess is that the road on the plan doesn’t in fact exist in its entirety yet OR that it is overgrown by the jungle.
It isn’t a “W” but rather a “VV”.
That’s all I got so far.

Someone posted earlier that the wadded up paper in the van looked like it had pencil holes in it. I took a closer look and I think what you are seeing are punch holes for putting the pages in a binder (three-hole punched). Maybe Roger figured out his instructions were bogus, ripped up the binder & took off with all the beer. In the shot of the skull on the floor there is a letter that is not wadded up. I can’t make out the letterhead symbol because of the low resolution.

Man, that episode was awesome! LOST is picking up speed once again. It was another episode that left us with a good feeling like back in season two when Hurley made a golf course!
It was a needed releif episode.

Did anyone else get the FAMILY GUY reference? The Asian reporter in family guy is called “Tricia Takanawa” whereas in Lost (and the title of the episode itself) the asian reporter’s called “Tricia Tanaka”. Sweet! And before you tell me this, they’re too similar to be a coincidence. Even the way they talk and the structure of their reportages are similar. Check it out!

im pretty sure that desmond and that chick that fell from the hellicopter are extreme lovas. and i think that hurlie is going to also fall in love with with that chick. so theres gonna be another love triangle (refering to the first one with Kate, Sawyer, and Jack) but then sawyer is gonna fall in love with desmond and the two love triangles will combinne and make like a lovel octigon or something crazy like that but possibly not its just a possibility…….. mmkay
