TOP TEN REASONS Jack HAD to go back because;

1. He wrote some Prescriptions that were illegible and needed to clarify them to suffering patients.
2. He needed more ugly tattoos.
3. Had to get his billing up to date for the Office.
4. Needed more lessons in being an arrogant hero.
5. Two words: Free Drugs!
6. Needed more acting classes—the toothy grin and Angry Man look was where he left off.
7. Kissed most of the chicks on the island and was moving on.
8. Went back to get his Yacht.
9. Was missing the mini bar in his Hotel.
10. Had to find a movie deal to make up for that horrible; Vantage Point.

I'm not so sure that the appendicitis/appendectomy is what got Jack off the island and not someone else. It must be meaningful in some way of course.....It may have signified the Island's unhappiness w/ Jack. Possibly it was developed as part of the story line to show us the Juliet/Jack/Bernard/Kate surgery interaction. I think that it was simply the circumstances that led to his being with the others (O6) that got off the island. Perhaps they were all on the chopper or on that Zodiac boat when/if the freighter explodes and the island gets moved. However, Jack's comment that "Sawyer chose to stay" indicates that possibly Jack could have made the same choice. Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sun, Sayid, Aaron, and Sawyer all end up in the same vicinity as eachother and the chopper or Zodiac. (It's feasible. Kate and Sayid were together when Richard and the Others forced them to surrender, Jack and Sawyer were looking for Hurley, and Sun and Aaron were told by Jin to get off the freighter.) They all somehow end up together and make an attempt to leave the Island, maybe even with plans to help the people on the freighter. Sawyer chose to stay at the last minute for whatever reason. Depending on the reason, Jack wouldn't stay just because Sawyer did....especially if the only people they'd be "leaving behind", at least at the moment, would be the likes of Locke, Ben, Alpert, and the Others. Everybody else was down at the beach waiting to be shuttled to the freighter or already on the freighter. I wonder when Kate promised Sawyer she'd do a favor for him. I think it something they talked about a long time ago. There may even be a FB or something which reveals it. I have a feeling that FB's from present day time back to what happened on the Island may have to be used to tie up some loose ends next season.
Notice how upset Jack is when Sawyer tells him that Hurley is with Locke and Ben. He feels compelled to go find Hurley now. Jack would only leave the island under 2 circumstances: 1. he was forced or 2. pure circumstance. It is inconsistent with his character to leave any one unwillingly behind. (this was touched on by Cindy in post 420)
I agree. I think that is why Jack got appendicitis. D&C had to give him a reason to be one of the first off the island because it is not in his character to get off before everyone else was safe.

Desmond did it... in the Orchid... with the baton.

Seriously, he pushed the button so late that it caused the plane to crash. He could've cared less that the computer was busted. He pushed the switch that blew up the hatch. He led (ie influenced) Charlie to go to the station and cancel the interference, allowing Jack to use the phone and contact the freighter. Everything significant that Des has done has been for the benefit of Widmore finding the island. IMO, sure he loves and misses Penny and if he impresses her father by helping him find the missing island... I'm not saying Widmore is pulling his strings. I'm thinking it is a plan entirely hatched by Des to win over Widmore and get his approval.

Other thoughts: Has Ben been able to leave since the sub was destroyed? I think Ben got off the island with the O6 (and possible some others) and is as unable to get back as any of them. Ben is in the coffin.

When they got off the island in the first hour, that was a flash-forward. in "real time", they are still on the island or freighter.
I have to disagree at least in the LOST storytelling sense. Last episode had the "whoosh" sounds for scenes on the island and freighter implying that was the FB.

I have to disagree with the "all of Desmond's visions have come true as far as we've been shown" statement. Desmond had a number of visions about Charlie (which the viewers were shown) which did NOT come true.

The person in the coffin might be "dead" sometime in 2007, but on this show, it doesn't mean they won't act in every episode between now and the finale! Between flashbacks and "present time" episodes, whispers, ghosts, dreams and apparitions, being killed on LOST doesn't mean you don't work as an actor!

One easy example, Christian Shephard has always been "dead" and has appeared in a dozen episodes.

: ) P
That is a good point PJ, and i'm not saying he would be gone forever, but look at Dominic (Charlie). He didn't sign the contract for the 4th season, and yeah...he was in the first episode with Hurley, but we haven't seen him since. I hope everyone stays until the end.

Thank you Doc for rations drop info! Also, thanks for correcting me Kate on vision being Desmonds, NOT Charlie's. I never fail to find what i need to hear on this blog :).
As for coffin predictions, i'm going to say that Michael Emerson is a terrific actor, perhaps the best on the show. I think his career could take off here soon, so it might be time to say goodbye to him on this show...so i'm going with Ben. Second guess, Locke.

PJ, I think I may have used this one on you in the past. The one thing you are omitting that makes me think Charlie has become a Whisperer is the WHOLE conversation between Charlie and Hugo:

*snip*

CHARLIE: I am dead. But I'm also here.

HURLEY: Ok, prove it.

[Charlie slaps Hurley]

HURLEY: All right, ok.

[They sit down together]

HURLEY: Did you know you were going to die when you swam out there?

[Charlie nods]

HURLEY: Then why didn't you tell me?

CHARLIE: Because you would have tried to stop me. And since I was gonna do it anyway I thought I would spare you all the drama. And now you have to do something. But you're hiding from it. That's the real reason you ran when you saw me in the store. You knew I was here to tell you.

HURLEY: I'm not listening to this. No cause you're not here.

[Hurley covers his ears and squints his face]

CHARLIE: I am here, you're being a baby.

HURLEY: I'm gonna close my eyes and count to five, and when I open them you'll be gone.

CHARLIE: I am here.

HURLEY: One!

CHARLIE: Don't do this.

HURLEY: Two!

CHARLIE: They need you.

HURLEY: Three!

CHARLIE: They need you, Hugo.

HURLEY: Four!

CHARLIE: You know they need you.

HURLEY: Five!

[Hurley opens his eyes, and Charlie is gone]
Yeah, I think you did, Hammer. But for the benefit of the bloggers that are newly interested in the Charlie theories, I will reply again. *BG*

Charlie could well have seen that Hurley was genuinely freaked out by seeing him and decided to "disappear" behind this big ole tree:

http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage-1364-624.html

You may well be right that Charlie is a whisper. I can't prove a thing and we'll all figure it out SOME TIME in the next two years! LOL

Thanks for the debate!

CHARLIE: I am here, you’re being a baby.

HURLEY: I’m gonna close my eyes and count to five, and when I open them you’ll be gone.

CHARLIE: I am here.

HURLEY: One!

CHARLIE: Don’t do this.

*BG*

Charlie could well have seen that Hurley was genuinely freaked out by seeing him and decided to “disappear” behind this big ole tree:

http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage-1364-624.html

You may well be right that Charlie is a whisper. I can’t prove a thing and we’ll all figure it out SOME TIME in the next two years! LOL

Thanks for the debate!

Maybe the chopper takes off...gets shot at as it lifts off...Claire's dead and they have to dump her as they as losing fuel from another bullet hole...

So; Claire gets on but....gets bumped on her flight. No voucher given. Sorry Charlie Tuna. (never liked her either)

Next to go soon (I hope); The Doc...and many of my friends agree!
Rather see more of Rose or Bernhard....or even the Polar Bear.
Polar Bear swims out to the Zodiac and slices it open spilling Losties and then a shark shows up and fights with the Bear over the meal in the water...and then Smokey piles it on... (kidding...I'm going nuts here waiting for da finale).
