Bravo, Andi, great piece of research and info on a literary reference! Adding it to the list at lostpedia of references.

A fascinating theory! The correlation to the "great leg" on the show and with the plan to limit world population by intentionally releasing a virus gave me chills. You are definitely on to something.

BTW, I just noticed that just today, EW came out with an article on The Watchmen, did you see it? http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1120854_1_0_,00.html

I like your theory, it is sort of like mine.

I'm 99.99% sure that the white flash had something to do with the island being exposed to the outside world. Now, without the shield, it is only a matter of time before someone else wanders into the island area.
Is it just a coincidence that 108 is the sum of the environmental factors (4 8 15 16 23 42)? I don't think so.
If the Tesla Shield downed Flight 815, then we must ask ourselves what happened to allow a) Rosseau's ship, b) Henry Gale's balloon, c) Desmond's ship, d) the supply planes (which may possible have taken off from the island... maybe), and possibly e) Kelvin's transportion (provided that he was being sarcastic when he said he "signed up" for DHARMA).

Anyway, those are the things I am working on now. Good theory!

Haha, talk about coincidence! I didn't see the EW article but a re-colored version of the graphic novel sounds great. I'll try to read the article later today.

The 30% of the world thing is just how I interpret it. If they want to stop famine, war and poverty, I'd say they have to deal with the entire world and not just two tribes.

Don't we already know that the reason the flight crashed was because Desmond didn't push the button? Otherwise, great theory.

I must admit i've been out of touch with lost for a while since the end of S2... this article totally got me back in. It's BRILLIANT! I really like how the stor of a single plane crash, has evolved to the end of the world lol.

To reply to Alex. We only know that Desmond thinks he crashed the plane, and that there is a corrolation between his 'system failure' and the plane crash.

Personally, I don't think he did crash the plane. But that's another story. :)

Season 2 on DVD and another KILLER analysis by you Andreas! It just does not get any better. Thanks for the great research and a running start to Season 3. For those of us who work too much and did not get to play regularly during the summer....doesn't it feel good to be back? Thanks to Cecelia as well who clearly helped me to stay in the loop during the summer.

Very good article - the Watchmen - LOST connection is a lot to think about. Regarding Inman and his protective suit - We do know that he wanted to keep Desmond in the hatch so that he could fix Desmond's boat in secret and leave Desmond behind to 'save the world.'

I just saw the whole Hanso Exposed video. I laughed when I saw the standard YouTube script at the end with the button that says 'Watch again.'

Thanks Andreas, great analysis!

Another little proof of the influence of "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" to lost writers from season 1.
In episode 107 "Raised by another", Hurley is doing his census (that will lead us to the actual identity of Ethan) and questions Locke about his name, place of birth, etc. Locke reacts oddly and seems to be aware of that issue.

HURLEY
It’s John, right? John Locke?
LOCKE
This about your census?
HURLEY
Yeah, thought it’d be a good idea to, y’know, find out who everybody is. Get their names, places of residence --
LOCKE
And who’s checking to see who you are?
Hurley’s slightly taken aback at that
HURLEY
M-me?
LOCKE
It was a joke.

VERY good article.
And yes, I have noticed the Watchmen connection as well. There was also the sub story of the pirate ship in Watchemen, and then we have the 'Black Rock' on the island.
I did -not- make the foot connection to Ozymandias, however. I immediately thought of the Colossus of Rhodes. The '4 toes' thing still confuses the hell out of me, however.
They pointed it out, so you can bet that is significant.

I think Desmond DID crash the plane. I think the EM Generator creates a 'snow globe' on radar. However the island would still be visible if you get close enough. The pulse Desmond created would have knocked out the ship. And Desmond hit the failsafe before a second pulse was created (hence Michaels boat still worked). And yes, I think the island is exposed to the world to find now.

I think I'm starting to agree with Mole and Castaway03 regarding the "snowglobe". It doesn't make sense for it to be a Tesla Shield since such a shield would have burned the original Henry's balloon and the pirate ship.

I still believe that there is/was a shield which hides the island though.

Well, you guys have gone and done it! :) I'm going to Barnes and Noble's and pick Watchmen up... and while I'm at it, get one of those jigsaw puzzles, too.

Back on the foot now, it was one fo the most mysterious elements of the finale, one that left us all open-mouthed gaping and saying "Huh?". This is one more reference to be added to the list... but I think they left it deliberately ambiguous. It could be the Colossus of Rhodes, Atlantis/Lemuria, etc. too. And I think this was mentioned in the Finale article comments, but maybe buried after the several hundred comments we got there... but there's an excerpt from a Thomas Peacock story called "Headlong Hall" which reads:

<blockquote>Here you see is the pedestal of a statue, with only half a leg and four toes remaining: there were many here once. </blockquote>

Anyway, I still like this allusion, too, and the nice thing about Watchmen is that we have an actual quote from Lindelof saying "best piece of popular fiction ever produced"... now that is a strong statement that says a lot. We don't have to guess as to whether the influence is there.

I'm really diggin' this theory Angreas. I still think that the turning of the "key" allows the "shield" to be opened and that the "button" kept the magnet at bay. I feel this is true because Desmond had failed to push the button before (plane crashed), but the Portuguese guys didn't get a reading until Desmond turned the key (assuming he accomplished this task). We'll have to see if the key gets turned back to "rehide" the island...but I haven't figured out the implication of the hatch with the button being destroyed.

Another comic connection to remember...
Jeph Loeb is a producer for the show.
He is also a comic book writer of some pretty major skill.
Cecilia, I would love to hear what you think of Watchmen after you have read it.
It is, in my opinion, one of the finest examples of the craft of writing that I have ever seen. The way the story unfolds and the clues are given...it's amazing. Also, the artwork is every bit as important as the text. Fine use of the full value of the medium. You will see visual elements that are mimiced in the next scene w/ other elements. But if you notice, the writing does the exact same thing.

Sorry, didn't mean to go 'bloggy' on you!
Back to LOST...

I can't wait to see if the hatch is still there, but destroyed. Or it was catapulted off the island by the sudden reversal of polarity of the failsafe switch.
Either way, I doubt they can simply turn the key back to 'reset' it. One way or the other, I think the hatch is finished.
I'm just concerned that Mr. Eko & Locke may be 'finished' as well!

I think that Michael will be back. I think that Fake Henry's comment about 'you won't be able to return' was based on the radar 'snow globe' being in place. He didn't know the curtain had been dropped already. Michael's betrayal may ultimately be what gets them all saved. Ironic, yes?

There is also a connection to comics in the show. It's when Sawyer shoots the polar-bear. Only minutes before Walt sees a polar-bear in a spanish comic-book (I don't remember which episode it was).

I also believe that the electro-magnetic shielding hides the island from the rest of the world and pretty sure is somewhere in/near anarctica. What other reason would the two scientist have to look for electomagnetic disturbances there? Maybe the polar-bear from above got there on a floe. So this would fit your theory.

I think I will buy the book to complete my LOST-experience ;) great theory

Yeah, I don't know if it was a Watchmen reference, but the comic book is probably a lot more important than what we've been 'told'.

Indeed. They made the scene look too unimportant to really be that. Walt's feelings/thoughts affect the world around him. The impression from the comicbook seemed to spawn the bear.

Isnt a reason that the scientist that were on antartica is because they we're near one of the magnetic poles?

When the island elektromagnetic point blew up, it could have created an irregularity at the southern pole? Just a thought.

Btw, anyone noticed that Hurley originally read the comicbook in one of his flashback i believe, and he never came back on it, even though Walt had it.

Nice, interesting analysis. I wonder if the Lost creators know where Lost is going? Or are they giving us conflicting theories they'll figure out later how to unify?

A few ideas:

I have a different take on the statue (four toed foot). I don't think the number of toes is as interesting as the statue itself. It shows someone had a high opinion of themselves. I'm coming to the conclusion that the Others really are the good guys, and fought off another group for control of the island and its power, which they guard or have destroyed. The statue may represent in future episodes the past leader of the island (Hanso?) who let his power go to his head, greating a dictatorship which the Others fought and won, then worked to hide from anyone else or are simply staying put because they cannot leave the island. I think its the latter and likely due to the disease that is mentioned every now and then. Also, note that when the Others saw the plane breaking apart they snapped into almost military dicipline with Ben giving the orders and people taking those orders including prepared plans such as ordering Gibson to "become one of them". These people definitely have lived through a military like organization but as we saw at the beginning of this season they were all living pretty boring suburban lives without a care in the world. I believe they had won their battle long ago and were living out their remaining days. Note there are no children belonging to the Others. I believe they are doomed in some way, having saved the world in the past.

As for the polar bear, maybe walt had something to do with its appearance, but there are bear cages that Sawyer and Freckles are being held in. Remember that Sawyer took longer than the "bears" to figure out how to get the food? And the food is "fish cakes". That's not a typical bear food except maybe grizzlies, but it sure fits polar bears. Anyway the zoo's animals are gone. Maybe all dead, or escaped and living on the island, like the polar bear. And when Sawyer shot it is bled and died, it didn't disappear as an apparition would.

The magnetism clues are everywhere. The guys at the pole who detected the island when Desmond hit the failsafe, Eko's brother's plane, which, based on where we think the island is, was on the exact other side of the earth in Africa. And if you assume the "numbers" are the coordinates of the island, which makes sense since its in the south pacific, and then determine the antipole to it, you end up near a town called Bangui in the Central African Republic which has the Bangui Magnetic Anomoly, thought to be caused by a buried meteorite, and has a strong magnetic field. Maybe it had something to do with Eko's brother's twin engine plane ending up on the other side of the earth. I don't think the magnetism is shielding the island but instead is used to move from place to place on the earth using some power of the magnetism, with satellites maintaining contact with all magnetic locations and thus the need to hit the button to contact the satallite, which in typical earth orbit would circle every 108 minutes. Also, note that when the pulse occured the Others were not that concerned. If its shielding the island or has some other importance, the Other's themselves would have been pushing that button, so Jack was right, there was no real need to push the button. Now how did he know that?

A couple of thoughts Sully.

-Walt's "powers" aren't apparitions. Like in "Carrie" they make stuff happen for real.

-I think the guys looking for island were not tipped off by the turning of key, but by failing to push the button. They made a comment about "missing" the last "one". I think they meant when Desmond failed to push the button on the day of the crash. They didn't "miss" a turning of the key because nobody turned the key before Desmond did when the hatch was destroyed.

You might be onto something with the satelites, you should have put that in the Theory Contest.

Hi,

Another few links with Watchmen:

1) The balloon that the real Henry crashed onto the island with had a smiley face on a red background, much like Watchmen opens with a blood spattered smiley face

2) The discovery that the Hatch is being watched by a station with multiple monitors, echoes how the Veidt character in Watchmen monitors the world through a series of cameras

3) Both stories use the stylistic device of replaying an event from the perspectives of multiple characters.

4) Both works have as a strong theme the notion of the mystery of Fate and the complex interconnections that structure reality; that seven degrees of separation idea.

Apologies if I'm reading too much into this, I've just finished a weekend where I watched the complete second season. Hope I make sense.

I still question the theory that says the hatch was protecting the island. If that is true, then why did Ben/henry break lockes will to push the button? Wouldnt he have wanted to keep the island hidden? Also the side effect from not pushing the button has knocked out the "others" communcation to the outside world. Ben/Henry couldnt have wanted that or more importantly didnt know that would happen. That all leads to the fact that the "others" did not realize the significance of this hatch? When deasmond didnt push the button, and the ground shook and the plane crashed, none of the others said " oh my god, the swan hatch!" I dont believe they knew right away what caused it.

I do believe the "others" somehow gained control of the island, in my opionion to stop the spread of the virus. After the "incident", the new powers of powers Dharma decided to take drastic action, that led to the "Others" rebellion. Hence, they are the good guys and the keeper of the island and stopped the spread of the virus. They take blood to ensure its not come back, or no one new is infected.

I think somehow the others are protecting the island from the bad people that want to re-initate the drastic action "virus".

Thanks for reading, im going out on a limb I know.. :0)

I think somehow the others are protecting the island from the bad people that want to re-initate the drastic action “virus”.

Thanks for reading, im going out on a limb I know.. :0)

I like the ideas slomski. The big question is how the timeline of Lost and the Lost experience connect to each other. If Mittelwerk's team created the virus, wouldn't it be created after the losties crashed on the island?

Ahh, as we dive deeper into the abyss.. thanks for humoring me!

I dont think Mittelwerks team created our Island Virus. The timeline is the hardest thing to figure out as there have not been many clues.. ( I keep watching the last episode of our portugal friends to see if I can find a date)

Were assuming that we know the losties crashed in 2004 and the Sri Lanka video was made in 2006. The shows creators have said time is different on the island. So does that mean theyve been there for two months and two years have passed in real time?

In the Sri Lanka video - we know the Hanso video is old, from the originial Dharma project, we know that Mittelwerk is talking in 2006. We have to assume that two infected villages are not on our island, this is the key to the theory our island "others" are trying to keep the original virus locked on the island.

So if the original virus on the island led to the incident and caused the revolution on the island then you have to believe that Mittelwerk is doing nothing more than caring on work outside the island and he does not have the original virus.

Rumors say he stole "a" virus after he took over the Hanso company and then ran. I believe he was never trusted with the location of the island. Mittelwerk may be the leak to Pen, knowing she had the resources "money" to find the island if mittlewerk planted the seed of where desmond might be.

Sorry for loosing track of time, the timeline still works because mittlewerk or the SriLanka video is years after the losties crash, or is it? In either event I havent found a link that mittlewerk actually has "the virus" in his contorl. So I the purpose of the Sri Lanka video is to show Mittlewerk is still trying to find the value to change the equation.

Its on our island.

I really like the idea of Mittelwerk telling Penny that Desmond is on the island to get her to find out where the island is located!

Regarding time being different on the island, I just got a pretty cool idea. I'm going to do some research and probably write a post about it. Keep your eyes open.

I just had a thought got to get it down ..

Im still tring to figure out what Ben wanted by the destruction of the Swan and the breaking of Lockes will to push the button..

What if the sawn wasnt doing just research on magnetics, and wasnt the Field Generator as some claim ( too many star wars movies)

What if it was containmnet? Built by Dharma after the incident (the smoke) and designed to contain the properties of the island. THats why it had been seeled off. Ive got to watch the overirde key piece again with kelvin...

This explains Kelvin and why he wasnt part of Bens others, he was put there by Dharma? to push that button and make sure, ex cia, killer, assasain, etc he would make sure that button got pushed, until after years he found an out with desomond..

So if the swan was a containment, Ben didnt know that, and that means the other hatches are containments too, and what happens when locke and the losties distrub the lock,, and open the doors?

Smokey is active again, very much so after the swans destruction.

Ben and Juliette are in cohoots, also think Kate is in it with them. Kates job or mission is to turn Swayer.

stilll lots of ?s but i think im getting a picture, ill add these to the white board this weekend when im home and try to lay it all out..

Where is that freakin stewardess?

I don't think the entire hatch was built for containment but it is pretty clear that part of it was covered in concrete. My guess as to why this was done is that they had to block of the electromagnetic radiation coming from the electromagnetic anomaly (like Chernobyl).

Maybe the "virus" is what happened to the guy at the hospital where Hurley was. The one who kept repeating the #'s. Maybe he was someone who did get off the island. Do we have a name on this guy?

BB, the guy at the Santa Rosa Mental Hospital is Leonard Sims, or "Lenny". He and Sam Toomey heard the numbers while being stationed at a naval listening post. Sam Toomey used the numbers to win a competition at a local fair and then killed himself. Lenny became insane thinking about the numbers.

Hi,
I've also found two direct quotes (or references) of Watchmen in Lost:

Walt reading a comic book on the beach = the Black teenager reading a comic book near the newsstand.

The hot air balloon shows a yellow smiley on a red background = Watchmen cover.

Another image / idea that appears in both Lost and Watchmen; in "Every Man for Himself" (Season 3, Episode 4) Sawyer plans to give an electric shock to the next person to come outside his cell when they stand in a pool of water he made. This reminded me of when Rorschach electrocutes someone who comes into his jail cell during the prison riot (Watchmen Chapter VIII, Old Ghosts) by breaking the toilet in his cell.

It is a good article. My addition to that theory is how did the Dharma people on the island have the “killing gas” that Ben used on the Dharma people and his father? This gas isn’t something that you would normally keep in your supplies. I hope they explain that mystery, however my theory is that this “gas” is the virus that this guy discusses in his article to kill 30%. My other theory is that they are going to be “unleashing a virus which kills 30% of the world’s total population and keeps on killing 30% of all new born humans would stop overpopulation, famine, war and poverty.” They might not be able to control how it kills off 30% of the newborns and it kills all newborns, which is why they brought Julia to the island. That “vaccine” that Julia injects the mothers to help them live longer is probably part of the vaccine that the Dharma people used on themselves.

I guess you guys have probably already noted these connections, but here are some more:

1. The deaths at the end of Watchmen are reported by the news media in the world of Watchmen as being caused by a fourth dimensional creature being teleported into the Institute for Extra Spatial studies. Both anomalies involve a flash of white light which engulfs all the people. I wonder if the island is a kind of fourth dimensional creature or entity that has somehow intersected with this world?? I think Alan Moore (the author of Watchmen) at the end of From Hell, his take on Jack the Ripper, poetically described the Ripper as a fourth dimensional entity that linked across time periods. Maybe this is what has happened with Jacob and the island.

2. The scientists on the secret island in Watchmen are killed by an explosion on a freighter, that looks alot like the freighter we have seen in Season 4, one that is also lined with explosives.

3. The Dr. Manhattan character and Desmond are both unstuck in time in a similar way, although there are important differences too.

I reflect similarities between Walt and the little black kid who read the comic book throughout Watchmen. Once I saw that in the show, I thought it looked familiar. I recently read 'Watchmen' again in preparation for the movie and there was my missing puzzle piece.

Also within the plot, of course are the similarities between Hanso and Veidt, the Antartic "island" and so forth and so on. I always respected Lindelof and his choice of great literacy as a backdrop for telling great stories, and none so great as to adapt 'Watchmen' in the series.
