Enough info now!

You were right flashes were a dislodging from time caused by the turning of the wheel!

Wow, awesome episode tonight....

This is going to take some time to digest.

I believe that the flashes did not start because of the donkey wheel turning. I think the flashes were indirectly related to that event...

I believe the flashes are directly related to the course corrections that are necessary to prevent paradoxes from occurring.
I disagree with your first statement. I think we were shown WHY the flashes occured. The FDW was off it's track. I do believe they flashed to certain times for a reason, as you stated.
you may be right, not enough info to make a final decision yet, for me.
++++++++ That was just rude… maybe I am reading to much into that comment but as a person who reads a tremendous amount about physics, spacetime, string theory, M-theory and science in general I can assure you that what I summarized about Einstein’s theory is indeed the short version
///////////////////
I am even considering the law of Inertia which applies to the island. And the donkey wheel is the brake . not the acelerator. if you know what i mean ? If you dont then i will go no further.
+++++++++++++++++

I think that is very interesting and I am thinking of how it could relate to the sequence of events that we have witnessed. I will get back to you on what I come up with. I would also be interested in hearing more of what you have to say on this subject.

I believe the flashes are directly related to the course corrections that are necessary to prevent paradoxes from occurring.

According to Einstein space and time can be thought of as one fabric that can stretch and contort. According to all the mathematical formulas it is even theoreticaly possible for the fabric of spacetime to tear. There has been much speculation on what that means in the scientific community, however, one thing is for certain and that is the fact that if a tear was to occur it would be extremely violent and most likely lethal to human life.

In space, areas of extreme phenomenon, can exhibit very strange behavior. For example in regions of extreme density (aka blackholes) the fabric of spacetime is warped and stretched so much that even a particle of light (photon) can not escape traveling at the speed of light (theoreticaly the fastest possible speed in this universe). Hence the name blackhole. In the center of a blackhole there is speculation that time stands still, if you could travel there without being crushed to death that is.

At extreme speeds, those approaching the speed of light, there is much speculation as to what the effects would be in relation to the fabric of spacetime. Possibly, it could fold on to itself and allow a trip from one side of the universe to the other to occur that would otherwise not be possible in one person's lifetime.

Could the island be traveling at these extreme speeds, and could that donkey wheel be some sort of inertial brake? I like the idea, it is intriguing and I have to give it more thought. However one knock against this would be that at those speeds the people on the island travelling at those speeds should age much slower than those in the real world off of the island. Or is that a knock, could that be why richard appears to not be aging? By the way, have we seen any characters age while they are on the island? This could be a big clue. Maybe everyone who is on the island ages very slowly or possibly even not at all.

Or, what about a region of extreme electromagnetism? Is that where the writer's are going with this. How would that effect the spacetime fabric? It also could be that the extreme electromagnetic phenomenon on the island is a by product of the island traveling at extreme speeds.

At any rate, I am going to miss this show when it ends....
