The Christmas Eve phone call between Desmond and Penny was a very heart-warming scene...and quite possibly a set-up for a major plot twist. I think poor Desmond is being played by Penny, who is after all, her father's daughter. Brace for a major disaster to befall Des when he learns the horrifying truth.
New to blog: AMAZING revelation!!!! Years ago my wife and I saw this old movie "Somewhere in Time" In it, a guy travels through time through hypnosis. Essentially he travels to 1912 by convincing himself it is 1912. The professer he consults before his little journey says his clothes/etc. everything must be 1912 or earlier. He falls in love with a woman from the past but accidentally is brought back by a modern "penny" is in his pocket. This reference to modern times ruins his link. A "penny" brought him back! No way it is a coincidence. They love to pay omage to sci fi flicks...but this also proves they planned this plot sequence from the start! The movie was from around 1980 and had C. Reeves and J. Seymour I think. Anyone else remember this?

Okay? It is 2004 on the island but is it 2007 real time (off island). Did Penny search for Des before is promised Dec. 24, 2004 call? Is the real call 12/24/07 (3 years later than he said)??
One heck of a coincidence:

When Jack meets Desmond and talks about how long he's been on the island, I remember he mentioned that the Red Sox won the World Series (2004). Now with the time travel episode, how funny is it that the Red Sox won in 2007 as well? Did the writers do some time traveling themselves? LOL. J/K
P.S. My memory isn't very good so I could be off on the Red Sox mention and if it was Jack and if it involved Desmond or another character. But you get my point.

What about Desmond's friend Donovan? He was a physicist from London, I think and is the person Desmond confided in about the episodes he was having in seeing the future. Do you think a connection with Faraday will surface eventually?

After Whidmore won the Auction. You could hear the auctioneer preparing for the next auction. He was speaking of a book by Dickens. When Desmond was living in the hatch, didn't he have a book by Dickens that he had received from Penny?

Wait a tic, if this is true, then the time travel isn't back but forward. Is Alpert traveling from the past?
I don't think you can say time travel is always forward. Minkowski was travelling backward. And Daniel said it was random or something like that. And if we consider Desmond's experiences in Flashes Before Your Eyes as being the same situation (travelling consciousness), in that case his 2004 consciousness travelled backwards.
