John Locke from Lost

We’ve finally reached the best day of the week. Based on the Official Podcast, tonight’s no-flashback episode should answer a number of questions, and I am sure in typical Lost fashion, create quite a few as well. I am excited for all of these reasons:

Warning, Spoilers!

  • We will find out what Locke has been up to since we last saw him, and supposedly how his father ended up on the Island as well
  • Finally, the name of the not-so-mysterious parachutist will be officially revealed (AKA Season 3’s Worst Kept Secret): Naomi Doret for the two people that are still unaware, and yes, the name is of some “Dickensonian” relevance. More importantly, we will also get a better explanation of her understanding of what happened to Oceanic Flight 815
  • The Others - Why did they tuck tail and run with heavy artillery? Hopefully we’ll get that answer as well.

Put your thinking caps on folks, D&C are adamant that the “Purgatory” theories are not an option.

Here’s the official description from abc.com for the new Lost episode “The Brig”:

Locke tries to persuade Sawyer to help rid them of a great nemesis, and the survivors learn some shocking information about Oceanic Flight 815 on the next episode of ABC’ Lost. Wednesday, May 2 at 10/9c

  1. No offense, Nick, but I’d consider that picture from “The Brig” a pretty big spoiler.

Thanks Toeknee, the image has been removed.

  3. Thank YOU, Will. Keep up the good work.

  4. so i was right about naomi’s last name being from a Charles Dickens book.

  5. One might say that the title of the episode “The ****” is a spoiler - arrgh matey. I thought the pic was okay, just a preview, didn’t spoil a thing. A spoiler is something that answers an open question. The picture was simply a tease - not an answer to a question.
Some could say the name Naomi is a spoiler too. We don’t even know her name yet - in the course of the story.

  6. I may have overreacted a bit, but the picture showed something we haven’t seen before. It’s not a major spoiler, but I personally wish I hadn’t seen it. Also note that the 4th bullet under “Leave a Reply” says “No spoilers or discussion of episode previews!”

  7. I caught this on my fourth watch through:

Naomi Dorrit (like Little Dorrit, good job Lost Chicka) had a heavy posh British English accent when she spoke english to Hurley in Catch 22. I wonder if this is further indication of her connection to Penny, a posh Brit lady herself and less of a connection to the men in the listening station.

    Great observation sir.

Other 218 - I pretty much agree with what you are saying here, and as always we will do our best to toe the line of preview vs. spoiler with these posts.

I really just hope the episode tonight lives up to the hype!

I am sure it will surpass all the hype. This is Round One in the Battle Royale that is the sweeps/ratings month of May (at least in the U.S.). If I were producing LOST, this ep would set the tone for the final eps of the season. I wouldn’t answer many big questions tonight, but I would “set the scene” to have the big questions answered in the coming weeks (along with more big questions - per std LOST formula).

  11. This is going to be one hell of an episode!

  12. Hmmm…I dunno. I’m pretty upset about this NEW shot you’ve got up there…of Locke, in the jungle? Now we didn’t know he was gonna be in the jungle again and not underground or undersea or wherever all those fleeing Others are. I’d say THAT’S letting on QUITE A BIT. ;)

  13. while everyone whines and complains about what is and isn’t a spoiler(jj)maybe someone can come up with a theory as to what Hurley and Jin were up to in the spoiler.Seems like they were up to something and Hurley, bless his heart,is such a poor liar.I wonder why Locke said he cant kill Ben and needs Sawyer to do it,and didnt you think he was going to ask Sawyer to kill Cooper, hmm, maybe some tricky editing of the promo to throw people off, thoughts?

  14. and im getting a really bad vibe off “Jack” or who ever is pretending to be Jack!

  15. i thinl that the girl from the helicopter is an other because when she said there all dead, ther not, so maybe ben sent her to trick them. if not im lost!

I just noticed that today too. It was a very pronounced accent, I’m surprised no one brought it up on the comments to D.O.C.

    thank you very much.

    - i really hope sawyer shoots cooper. i’ve been waitin 3 friggin seasons for this moment & if he doesn’t shoot him cause he’s to soft now, i will scream! he better shoot him!

    - i think Jack’s working with the others. if i had the choice between living in a real house and a make shift tent, i’d pick the real house. between real food - a hamburger we’ll say - & oatmeal, i’d pick the hamburger. between being protected by the others or being killed by the others, well i think u know what i’m gonna say. And jack is a doctor, i think they probably have another medical mystery & they want him to help. he was with them for like a week & God knows what they did to him.

    - who cares about the pictures? they’re not telling u anything!

  18. Poopypants said:

I don’t think it’s Ben they’re talking about. Locke says something about taking “him” from Ben’s tent, but I think “him” is his father/The Real Sawyer rather than Ben, and obviously that would explain why James might be up to the job. Also it implies Locke escaped from The Others rather than being set free or having had the ability to leave of his own free will (because we don’t really know the circumstances for his being with them since they disappeared).

The Dickens reference in Naomi’s last name along with The Others’ guns and cages infer some sort of prison and I’m wondering whether it’s meant to be metaphorical or literal. Could the Island be some sort of prison reform experiment? The smoke monster a sort of judge and executioner (though that still doesn’t explain what it is or how it exists)? The other sci-fi aspects of the island (higher sperm counts, fast healing, no cancer til Ben) some sort of experimentation being conducted by The Others on The Losties, who themselves would then be the prisoners? Or if not a prison, a sanitarium?

Sorry for the rambling post and apologies if this has been discussed before elsewhere.

  19. I also meant to mention this episode’s title as part of the “prison island” theory.

I just noticed that today too. It was a very pronounced accent, I’m surprised no one brought it up on the comments to D.O.C.

The ‘posh’ english accent the actress Marsha Thomason has is her own, from Northern England (think Daphne Moon from Frasier). Lancashire/Manchester accents aren’t necessarily considered as ‘posh’ as they are considered ‘working class’, like Trebiani from Brooklyn, “hey… how you doin’?”.

  21. I thought Sawyer was going to kill Cooper too but in the second preview posted above, titled “sneak peak of the Brig”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LBRISz8qUI(remember this link was posted by Nick ok,so dont freek out at me)Ben says “I snuck into Bens tent and kidnapped him and I wan’t you to kill him” and he goes farther to say “this is the guy who locked you up and tortured you ect”.
I was waiting for 2 years for sawyer to kill Cooper (as someone posted above) so I will be disapointed if its turns out to be Ben he wants killed, thoughts?

  22. I know you’re not supposed to have spoilers in you’re comments so i’m warning you now. This thread right now is basically a spoiler & the show starts in 20 minutes so whatever. I just can’t help myself! I read the insiderscoop on this other website & i just can’t help myself. I have to post my comments here! I’ve warned u so it’s you’re fault if u continue reading!!!!!!!!
3 HUGE things u might wanna know:
    1) sawyer kills cooper. u haven’t been waitin 3 years for nothin.
    2) sayid questions naomi & believes her (i won’t untill she has her own flashbacks & i’m convinced otherwise. untill then, everything she says i will be treating like bull)
    3) jack IS working with the others. at least working with julliette.
I’m sorry again. u can delete this.

  23. This “jack” we see now is just Ben’s puppet or maybe this isn’t Jack,I dont know fellow posters but something tells me there is going to something HUGE comming up with ole Jack.

  24. It was a very good episode.
I called the entire thing, but still.

I don’t think it would fit Locke’s character to kill his own father.
    It just wouldn’t be right.

I think the idea that Jack is working with the Others is silly. Jack wouldn’t do that…it’s just not the type of character he is.

  25. how is it not in his character? 1) he always has to have something to fix, 2) he’s a doctor & they have a hospital, 3) he’s already helped the Others out & turned his back on the losties once, everything gets easier the more u do it.

  26. Did Cooper (Tom Sawyer) have a different accent? It sounded more Southern. Maybe it’s just my imagination.

  27. Cooper definitely sounded more southern to me, too.

    Loved the episode, though.

I’m going to believe CC and DL when they say it’s not purgatory. I’m going to assume that Locke didn’t actually imagine Cooper into being, and say that Cooper was actually kidnapped by the others.

The question then becomes–why did they kidnap him? And why did they all want him dead so badly?

Was it really just a test for Locke? Or was it more than that??

  28. great episode… conflicted about locke’s appraoch to manipulating sawyer to kill his father- seems like he mihgt fit in just fine with the others. i believe jack is working with juliettte but not the others… they are both in bad situations and want out. i do not think jack is one to be manipulated easily. he is controlling and ultimatly self serving despite his leadership and wanting to fix things- helping/fixing others can also be an extremly self serving behavior. i hope sun kicks juliette’s ass at some point.

  29. I think you all need to shut up about spoilers. If you don’t want a spoiler then don’t read this blog. You sound like such incredible babies!

Great episode, tonight. Can’t wait until next week!

  30. Friggin Awesome Episode! Best one all season long!!!! Lots of thoughts & questions:

    - yes!!!!!!! yes! yes! yes! i knew they wouldn’t make me wait 3 seasons just to watch Locke kill the ole bastard instead or sawyer!!!

    - y does danielle want dynamite?

    - i luv how ben turns julliette in to Locke & locke gives it all away to Sawyer. But y is ben telling locke about julliette’s mission?

    - Kate is the stupidest love sick b**** in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!! Y the hell would she do something that stupid??!?!?!?!? Cause she’s a love sick puppy! I HATE her now. forget it. she should be preggers, probably is, & should definitely die! i can’t believe how dang stupid she is!

    - I would just like to say: I told u so! ( I know, very childish) Jack is working with the Others & he knows as much, if not more, than Julliette. Oh and for the record, I really don’t think that the Jack we see now is a poser. It’s Jack & he’s being a traitor to the 815ers. Jack is saying to many weird lines to Julliette to not be working with the Others.

    - Sawyer better get there fast & beat the crap outta Julliette & Jack before it’s to late! Sayid is welcome to help too. Oh, and they can beat Kate up too. And Naomi.

    - I can’t believe that Sayid is actually gonna trust Naomi! She’s from Dharma. Don’t care what they tell us. Untill she has her own flashback episode that tells me she is who she says, i don’t trust her or believe her. She’s LYING! She’s dharma or an Other.

    - I luv ben. I know he’s a SOB but he is awesome. He’s hard to figure out. I think that’s what makes a good character, being complicated. That would be y my favorite characters r sawyer, locke, ben, sayid, & sun.

    - best lines: sawyer’s “after you’re blow up everything that could get us off the island tour” line.
Cooper (that SOB) calling ben bug eyed. Lol.

    - so I’m still confused here. Does locke want to be one of the others or help the losties? He tells sawyer about everything he knows, but he’s going to go back & say he killed cooper to be one of the others? He’s so confusing & I luv it. (being confused).

    - locke having to kill his daddy to get in with the others confirms that in order to get into the others little group u first must kill. So julliette killing pickett was how she got into the group (if u ask me).

    - ethan & the dude who recruite julliette can go to & from the island.

    - how many times did sawyer use the SOB phrase in this ep? He’s back to his normal self. Killing, cussing, & bein a plane ole badass!!!! sawyer the badass is back! HALLELUIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    - we missed the scene where Locke blew up the Black Rock.

Questions That Show How Dumb I Am Sometimes:
    - y the hell was Sawyer throwing up?
    - so is naomi Australian? She said mate. & apparently she wa in the coptor alone.

  31. Amazing episode! I have sooooooooooo many observations but it’d take too long.

  32. by the way, Hurley is getting too fat…I wonder if Jorge Garcia’s health is okay. And Sayid’s nails are waaaaaaaaaay too long!

  33. Did I hear this or not? Did I hear Locke say to Sawyer that there are three pregnant women at the camp that the others are going to kidnap? Three? I can count 1,2, but 3?

  34. We now know for sure that when we were told that “no one can get on and off the island since the plan crash” is not true becasue Richard somehow made it back on to the island after the crash. Remember he was on the “main land” videotaping Rachel when the plan crashed. And he for sure wasn’t using the submarine since it was still there.

    - Sawyer blowing guts: It was his lifetime goal, his quest, the essence of his soul to wreak revenge on this person that destroyed his life, his family. Plus Cooper ripped up his letter - his link to family. Rip up the sole thing that means the most to you - see how you feel.
    - Aussies, Scots, English, Welsh, some Irish and some Canucks use “mate” frequently and freely. No biggie there.

  36. Becky wrote:

agreed. sayid needs nail clippers & hurley needs to go on the crash survivor’s diet. now, let’s get back to the episode at hand.

    1) y does danielle need dynamite?
    2) Sawyer is back to his badass self. buh-bye Mr. sensitive hello Southern BadAss! How many times did he use the SOB phrase?
    3) Jack & Julliette ARE working with the Others. I’m telling u. Jack has had to many creepy lines with Julliette to not be. They’re not working to protect the losties. They’re working to take all the women with the Others an make sure it’s done safely.
    4) Y did Ben hand over that tape & all the information over to Locke?
5)In Order for u to become an other, u must first kill. Locke had to kill his daddy or at least take credit for it to get into the club & Julliette killed Pickett to get her first backstabbing mission.

No, they’re gonna take ALL the women in THREE days.

thank u for clearin that up for me (i can be reall dumb sometimes :> ).

  39. ooooohhh. yikes. ALL the women. I don’t like the sound of that AT all. Thanks for clearing that up for me, lost chicka.

  40. here is something i thought was interesting….naomi told syid to remind her not to rescue him….those that go along with the time differential thing???

    welcome.

  42. Ben didn’t hand over the tape to Locke. Locke watch were he put the tape and I am sure went back to steal it. However, Ben is smart and I am pretty sure he planned that whole thing. If he didn’t want Locke to have that tape, he would have made sure he didn’t get it. I think that it is part of Ben and Juliets (and Jack I guess) plan for the losties to find out that juliet is a plant. If the others didn’t want the losties to know, they would have made sure they didn’t find out. The others are smart and malipulative and plan out everything they do. It is all on purpose.

Oh dear. I don’t like that at all, not AT all.

  44. great ep. loved it…..as everyone thought…man from tallahasee was the real sawyer. no its not “hell” why would all the children be there…i dont think they would have done anything in their lives to cause that…..what will the next eps. tell us…i can only wait…..yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. Ok, I think I am on to something here, although I cannot explain everything.
I am starting to tend towards this might be a part of a cult, a religous one. At one scene Lock approached Ben while Ben was reading a book quickly hiding it as Lock approached him. Could it be a bible? Can we assume Ben is a priest trying to start something? Some time ago I remember seeing AnaLucia finding preist’s clothing and a bible in a cave - can that be Ben’s?
Sawyer - His real name is James. His motehr’s name is Mary. Can it be that it is an analogy to st. mary, Jesus’s mother? Can it be that Sawyer is the ONE who ‘brought’ Lock’s father to the island and he was the one supposed to kill him? Can it be that James is supposed to take place as Jesus in the eye of the cult?
3 women are pregnant - I think one of them is Juliette (I am sure someone allready mentioned this before)?

  46. I understood it to be that the others are coming in three days to get just the preggos. Not all the women.

Unless they’re martians… (RE: Old “B” movie, Mars Needs Women)

  47. One ‘global’ note. Cooper said Flt 815 went down near Bali in 4 miles (20,000-21,000ft) of water that works out, there is a deep trench off of Bali - BUT - Bali is 3,000+ miles NORTHWEST of Sydney, Australia. Up to this point, everything has indicated that 815 went down 3,000+ mile NORTHEAST of Sydney.

GREAT theory!!!!! luv it! Sawyer wants revenge more than ANYTHING else in the world, & he got it.

but i’m confused here. does locke want to be one of the Others or just want to know the islands secrets? does he want to help the losties or hurt the losties? he’s so twisted. i can’t ever figure out if he’s good or bad.

  49. I think when Locke said, “I am on my own journey now,” he meant it. I don’t think he is with anyone, I think he is only thinking about himself right now and he is going to do whatever it takes to help himself.

  50. (per Ben)- they are waiting and hoping for someone “special” to arrive on the island. They may have believed it was Locke, but he couldn’t kill Cooper. Maybe they will believe Sun’s baby is the “immaculate conception”.

  51. Kate is SOOOOOO stupid! Sayid told her not to tell anyone & that included Jack! Nobody trusts Jack for a reason, he doesn’t want her, y doesn’t she take a hint? She ain’t makin Jack jealous by sleeping with Sawyer, that type of stuff NEVER works, there’s a reason nobody else trusts him, he doesn’t want her, & he’s not helpin anybody but the Others out here. And again for the 5 people who r gonna say he ain’t gonna help the others cause he’s a self less hero, he sold out the rest of the 815ers for a trip home in the yellow submarine. He’s already helped them out once. Everything gets easier the more u do it, including backstabbing people.

  52. I agree that Locke is on his own journey. He has always seemed to have his own reasons for doing things.

What about Des though? He also seems to be on his own path.

I don’t trust Sayeed at this point either. I don’t think that we have been given a reason to.

  53. Loved the last few eps.

    - Why plant Danielle right in the middle of that episode unless she has a big role to play? What is she going to blow up with the dynamite? Perhaps trying to get her daughter back? She’s going to play a part in the finale I think.

    - Ben definitely seemed to be manipulating Locke to kill his dad. In the preview for next week, however, Ben looks surprised when Locke plops his dead dad down. Perhaps Ben really did try and set Locke up to fail because he’s worried about Locke taking power/control of the Others? The question is, was Richard giving Locke the file on Sawyer legit (i.e. Richard and Juliette want a change of leadership) or another part of Ben’s manipulation?

    - Juliette says “I hate you” to the recorder–I think she legitamately does. She’s still playing along with Ben’s wishes because she still desperately wants off the island. She also said to Kate, “we should tell her” and Jack says “not yet”–this is either the fact that Kate is pregnant, or that those two have some sort of plan up their sleeves for when the Others come back for the women, i.e. Juliette has told Jack she’s a plant and they’re going to con the Others. We’ll see. Or Jack’s just being duped.

    - Patchy absolutely came running way too fast when he saw that flare–he knew someone was coming with a flare gun and that person would have a means of communicating with the outside world. Naomi is definitely part of the Others or in cahoots with whatever other organization is trying to get back in touch with them after the “sky turned purple” and they lost all communication. But why dupe Desmond? And why show Penny and the people in the communication ship at the end of season 2? And if Naomi was planning on dropping in and giving Patchy the satellite phone, why didn’t it work right away? Not sure about this one.

Can’t wait for the next few eps to finally answer what’s up with Dharma and the Others!

  54. lost chicka wrote:

I agree with bigfan. Locke started on a coordinated infiltration mission. Jack knew that Locke was ‘going in’, and I believe that Juliet may have known too. Jack and Juliet are in cahoots in support of Locke, but they don’t want to reveal too much too soon to the Losties [That is going to come back & bite Jack in the butt in the next few eps]. Cooper was Sawyers’ lifetime quest, but Cooper was the quest for many of Lockes’ adult years - Sawyer could kill because he had killed before (recently) - Locke could not because “I’m not a killer”. How was Saywer lured to Australia, someone claimed (falsely) to know where conman Tom Sawyer was. (he was baited onto 815).
    - And what was the deal with Richard Alpert? - giving Coopers file to Locke so Locke would go get Sawyer to do the murder. And bad-mouthing Ben behind his back? Genuine, or was it bait as well for Locke? (provided by both Alpert & Ben).

    - Juliet says “I hate you” about Ben. BUT she had just turned OFF the recorder. So no one except her knows that. I think she hates Ben too, that is why she is truly aligned with Jack now, ‘cept NO Lostie believes she is on their side but Jack (maybe Locke knows too).

my thoughts exactly about Danielle & the dynamite. I’ve asked that question already too. Nobody’s answered it for me either. :(

i know y’all want to find out that jack & julliete r really good people but i just don’t think so. jack & julliette keep on having these really wierd lines almost like they’re laughing at how easy it is to con the 815ers. Jack was with the Others for a week after Ben’s surgery (i keep on repeating this). They probably ate cake in front of him going “u want it, help us.” (& i mean that metaphorically). Jack has changed. He started out as basically the hero, but now he’s picked himself over his plane crash buddies (ex. doin surgery on Ben in order to get HIMSELF off the island. not him & the 815ers or just the 815ers but HIM). i think Julliette wants to tell Kate that she could be preggers & wants to test her. OR diabolical plan here: jack & julliette r gonna say “we have a plan to get u all safe & kick the Others butts” but magically Ben & friends r gonna show up & take everybody prisoners but 3 people: Jack, Julliette, & Naomi. i just don’t like jack, & think he’s with the Others & i’m very stubborn.

i think Naomi was sent by dharma. Dharma lets the Others live on the island or think that they are still in control of the island. 2 hatches blow up & the sky turns purple so Naomi is sent by DHARMA to investigate. They’re using Desmond’s love of Penny against him. THey know he’s been in one of the hatches that blew up & want to know y he did it so they’re gonna use his luv against him. Patchy knew that DHARMA would be coming soon since MR. John Locke blew up the flame & was searching for her.

& about Julliette sayin she hates Ben. u can hate ur boss but luv ur job. she hates ben, but luvs the mystery of y u can’t get knocke up on the island.

I agree with all the guidelines, but in fairness, some folks just saw DOC for the first time tonight, just before The Brig. You know how some get all excited, and the two episodes kind of blend together, and… well… I can see how one might directly cite a DOC moment, particularly if they are using their DOC observation to directly support a statement they are making about The Brig. Even the blog police will allow a little leeway there (I hope). AND kind and helpful is always the most important guideline.

  62. Danielle gets what? a 45 second cameo. Locke is non-chalant, points to the explosives, WARNS her that the dynamite is “unstable”. Hmmmm, I can only imagine what her target, but maybe, just maybe, with unstable mitro, she accidently blows herself up… Cooper is gone, maybe Danielle goes (blows) next.

  63. why would naomi tell syaid “remeind me not to save you.” how would she “save” him. she all messed up right now…unless its a time travel thing she knows about and can come back later????

  64. I continue to think there’s hope for Juliet, and I absolutely *don’t* think Jack’s an Other… it just doesn’t jive with the flow of the story to this point.

I wonder if Ben didn’t let John see where the tape recorder is on purpose, so that the Losties *would* realize that Juliet is a mole. In other words, perhaps Ben is intentionally allowing Juliet’s cover to be blown. Why would he do so? Beats me. But he seems way to smart to just leave the tape recorder sitting around.

  65. Last stray observation (for now). Ben says the Others are headed to someplace NEW… uh… well… someplace OLD. My guess - old to the island project/cult - new to US LOST FANS.
    (nitro not mitro - doh)

They aren’t my rules, and I’m certainly no sheriff, I just like to keep things fair for the majority of the people here. It’s no secret that the reason most of us have attached ourselves to this specific Lost-site is because we feel safe from spoilers here.

The main thing that bugs me is redundancy. 100 quality comments are worth far more than 200 comments with same information.

Anyway, this is not the proper place for this sort of discussion, back to The Brig.

…there are only 4 hours left of Season 3!

  67. one word… CLONES. jack, claire, charlie, michael. patches (we saw him die). the whole other set of losties at the bottom of the sea. danielle probably knows this and is waiting out to see who is who. are the clones self-aware? i don’t know. but this could also tie into the whole desmond “reliving” things. possible? and is it just a production schedule thing, or what- but why do we go whole episodes without seeing even a glimse of claire?

  68. and… i think sayid sent kate to tell jack. it looks like she did it impulsively, but that is a classic move we’ll find out about in a flashback!
