"The Mist" is my favorite King story! Of all his short stories made into movies I'm sooooo surprised this one wasn't done too. At least into a TV mini-series. Would have been great!

ps- It's not so much that the mist engulfs the town as it is implied a secret military project has "ripped" a hole into another dimension and the dimension (and the creatures in it) are spilling out into our world. This may have implications to Lost as one of the theories is they are in another dimension or world.

pps- Thinking about it more, Lost and The Mist are very similar in that as much as The Mist is a thriller/mystery it is also very much a study into human psychology and human reaction.

IMO in The Mist, King does an excellent job of exploring what might happen (very likely IMO) to ordinary people when suddenly thrust into an extrordinary and horrific situation w/o an obvious reason or explanation. It's a case study for how easily people's minds can be manipulated, their fears and disorientation preyed upon, and how people in such a situation can find themselves not only believing the most outrageous things but agreeing in mass ('group think') to do what they otherwise would consider absurbed or irrational or even supersticious. I won't say anymore for fear of spoling the story if you haven't read it. ;-)

The Mist sounds like an interesting story MasterPo!

As for the theory that Lost is taking place in another galaxy, it is an interesting idea, but I think it is a bit too sci-fi for Lost.

FYI - According to Wikipedia a movie version of The Mist is scheduled to be released sometime in 2008. Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile) is listed as both director and screenplay writer. He has the experience of making good King-based screen plays so I'm excited!

Sooooo, if we run with a theory that the Losties are in another dimension...what do you think about the possibility that Walt and Michael were sent "325" to yet another dimension that frees them from Lost but doesn't allow them back to the "real" world? This way they are "rescued" but the Others have no fear of being exposed by Michael.

Hammer - Like a 'safety valve' dimension? Something that sits between our world and the Losties' world? Maybe. But, not to squash your thinking, that's a bit too sci-fi IMO. Most likely *if* they are in another dimension there's only one portal in/out. Now whether 325 to "find rescue" means getting back to our world, that's the question! "Find rescue" can mean many things and we know the Others will often speak in double-speak.

Andreas - I agree Green Mile was great. I only saw it myself recently. Didn't look like something I'd be interested in but then I saw it from Netflix (wife wanted me to watch it) and really enjoyed it. All great actors too. Hope the casting for The Mist is just as good.

Variety writes that Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks TV will produce a six hour mini-series of Stephen King's "The Talisman".

Oh, and my view of the "Lost is in another dimension" thing - I don't think Lost is in another dimension and there are no alternate dimensions to the alternate dimension or anything like that, just feels too sci-fi for Lost in my opinion.

Master-

That was just for the sake of conversation since it was brought up in connection with the King book. I don't think that any of the info we know about Dharma or anything else points to another dimension. I just that that if we were to run with that theory...etc.
