Tonight’s LOST episode is called “S.O.S” and this is the official description:

Spoiler

Rose is surprisingly and vehemently opposed to Bernard’s plan to create an S.O.S. signal; romantic sparks are rekindled between Jack and Kate when they trek into the jungle to propose a “trade” with “The Others”; and Locke begins to question his faith in the island.

Thoughts and Ideas

First of all, sorry for the delay and sorry for not posting much lately. Another project has kept me very busy during the last few weeks, but things are calming down so I should be able to write posts on a regular basis again now.

Contrary to most of you, I didn’t find the LOST episode “S.O.S” to be that exciting. I really enjoyed last weeks’s episode “Dave” but this one just felt a bit empty. Nevertheless, we finally got a Rose and Bernard flashback, Jack and Kate started to get close again and Michael came back!

The most interesting part of the Rose/Bernard story in my opinion was that we learned that Rose has (or had) a terminal illness which seems to have been cured by the island. Isaac, the healer also told Rose that he healed people through energy. Energy which “perhaps is geological, magnetic.. or perhaps it’s something else”.

This immediately got me thinking of hatch (possibly containing a large electro-magnet) and the island’s electromagnetism. As you may remember, Dr.Marvin Candle said the following about The Swan station in the orientation film:

“…a laboratory where Dharma researchers could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from that sector of the island.”

My guess is that it is this “unique electromagnetism” that is responsible for curing both Rose’s illness and healing Locke’s legs.

Besides from that, we also found out that Rose and Bernard decided to never leave the island. They are however not the only characters who have such thoughts, as both Locke and Walt have previously said that they like it on the island.

Speaking of Walt. “Fake Henry”, or Michael Emerson as the actor’s real name is gave a wonderful performance by hardly saying a word in this LOST episode. When he did open his mouth, he confirmed one of my central theories about LOST by telling Jack that “He (the leader of the Others?) will never give you Walt”.

As I interpret this, Henry knows that Walt is of great importance. Probably because of the psychokinetic powers he appears to have. Could it be that Walt is the single most important character on Lost? We will just have to wait and see, but now that Michael is back, everything is set for a row of very exciting episodes to finish the second season of LOST.

I am almost willing to bet that we will see Walt before the end of this season.

  1. Am I really the first one to comment on this episode? WOW. We found out some s***. Who didn’t love Rose saying to Locke: “Well honey, you and I both know it’s not gonna take that long [for your leg to heal…and then they stare at each other a minute]…”

Of course, it turns out she just saw him earlier in the wheelchair, but he doesn’t know what she’s talkin about. Anyway, not the biggest action ep…but surely a thriller and quite a setup.

Who didn’t know that was gonna be M in the forest at the end? =]

  2. I didn´t saw this episode, do anyone can say what did happen with jack and kate plsssssssss!!!

  3. carms wrote:

I currently have no idea seeing as I am watching it right now. I live in California, so it’s on right now!

  4. S.O.S.= WOW

  5. i like rose and bernard :). they are a sweet couple. i had to look away when henry smiled!

  6. i don’t think it was micheal, he wasn’t screaming WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT!!!!!!!

  7. OMG When Henry had that really creepy grin, it really freaked out my daughter! Oh I love Bernard and Rose, they are such a great couple, I was really surprised when she had that illness…but just like John the island is a special place for her too.

  8. It’s about time Michael gets back to the group…I really miss Walt, he is a cool kid…..I sure miss Boone’s blue eyes too :(

  9. Well, that was certainly an interesting ep. Did anyone else notice the partial sign that Bernard constructed formed a frowny face? XD

  10. carms wrote:

Dude, you need to learn how to communicate!

Jack and Kate ended up face-to-face in the net trap (if you saw the previews for this episode, you saw a flash of someone getting swept up in the trap, but you couldn’t really tell who it was). Kate had to reach around behind Jack and get the gun out of the waistband of the back of his pants. Later, Kate says she’s sorry that she kissed him (I missed the kiss - not sure when that happened), and Jack says “I’m not.”

  11. I think I got more information out of the trailer for the next show as I did from this show. I thought the Jack and Kate hookup was lacking when it had such great potential. I am alittle surprised at how everyone is acting on the island. I would have been like bernard in that I would have been building a HUGE SIGN, but I would not have worked for Bernard as he displayed horrible management skills. Amazing healing on the Island would be if the dead losties came back …oops is that considered a spoiler? Speaking of spoilers does anyone think Michael is trying to draw the Losties over to the Others in his own version of a trade for Walt? One last comment with Sayids electronic back ground he could tell what that crazy computer is doing … its called reverse engineer? PS. This is just my first in a lot of POSTs.

  12. Anyone notice on the cover of that tabloid that Bernard found the faith healer ad in it said something about the “lottery numbers?”

not terribly compelling but pretty neat.

  13. I am going on vacation next week and I think it is going to be a rerun. Does anyone know?
Fake Henry gives me nightmares…….. What did the grin mean. My guess is that he is one of the “evil” others and his plan is to play mind games and have the losties quit putting the numbers in (which perhaps is some sort of a protection agains the “?” in the middle). I love this show!!!!

  14. I think that the kiss Kate was reffering to was from back in the first season after she was saw the horse, that’s the only time I can think of that they’ve kissed. Good episode, I love the way the open up stuff and yet don’t really say a word about it, they just let us think what we want, it’s a great way to get people hooked. Interesting… I wasn’t all that excited that Micheal is back, I was happier to see Vincent!

  15. Is anyone else disappointed in what John Locke’s behavior has become? He used to be so wise and clever. It seems he is now allowing Henry and Jack and everyone else to manipulate him. He’s falling for all kinds of stuff that seems to go against his character. It’s annoying me!

  16. Another great hour spent trying to get some idea of where things are going. After it was clear that Rose believes the island is a healing place, the camera panned over the many others who have found healing there: Jin and Sun, Claire and Aaron, Hurley and Libby–wait, just last week it seemed like Hurley wasn’t healed!, and finally Eko and Charlie. So, does anyone think these “couples” ARE healed? That leaves John Locke–not part of a couple–healed from his leg/back injury.

Mixing this healing with another idea someone wrote elsewhere on this site, we have the contrast of the island as a healing place versus the Dharma initiative bent on “fixing” things. Which is better, healing or fixing?

We really got a good chance to see a male character (Bernard) show how his love can turn to mania. He was close to losing it in his somewhat admirable quest to help the love of his life. I was glad to see his portrayal; not a lot of TV shows offer a male character with that kind of desperation-driven character flaw end up recognizing his error and admitting to his wife that he “gets it” now. That recognition started with Rose’s humbling herself, though. Very uncharacteristic of typical TV writing.

Rose was also portrayed so well. Her “making peace” with her destiny, yet finding herself falling in love and walking the tight rope between honoring her husband and making a stand. Wow! Good drama. Great actors. So much of the photography of this show zooms in on faces. To tell a story with facial gestures is pretty challenging.

That leads to fake Henry’s face. Horrible. What is he thinking???? Where will we be going from here?

How long until the next new episode?

  17. I missed the last 5 minutes….what happened?

  18. I think that the big question mark could be the cerberus monster. The flame hatch could be inside or near the volcano, this idea came to me when bernard was talking about a lava field.

  19. The lava field was one of the points that struck me. Bernard knew about it, but did anyone else in the group know about it? When did he first see it?

John Locke was feverishly trying to copy the map onto paper. Did he first try to lower the door?

Ana Lucia is more at peace, it seems. Why has she dropped her anger?

When Kate picks up the baby doll? Has that doll been shown at any previous time? Was that Rousseau’s trap, so close to the boundary line? Just questions I hope someone cares about.

  20. About Bernard knowing about the lava field… I think we are forgetting that he walked across the island from the Tailie’s beach. Henry’s little smirk there was immensly creepy! But even more creepy was thinking about what was making him smile…
Next episode is in two weeks (May 3).

  21. i definitely did NOT see Michael coming back- when someone was running towards Jack and Kate, I was expecting another crazy Walt sighting. Michael totally surprised me- but I can’t WAIT for the next episode when we can see just what’s happened to him and how he’s changed- he definitely looks… different.
what if the others have “converted” him into one of them, and he’s come back to the group for reasons that we aren’t expecting? maybe he’s going to try something untrustworthy… i don’t know.

I, too, was so excited to see Vincent. :)

It was also nice to get a back story on Rose and Bernard- what a cute couple. I was waiting for this one.

Overall I think the episode was fantastic- I enjoyed it more than last week’s episode.

I would really love to know when the next new episode will be… I”m so mad at ABC for showing reruns all the time. Maybe we won’t have to wait too long this time?

  22. BOORRRIIINGG.

I watched the 1st season on DVDs over a week period, then most of the 2nd season and I’m gotta say, the execs are really watering this down, trying to stretch it into the 3rd season. Talk about a show drifting laterally…..

  23. Another bit of a slow one but necessary to finally flesh out the last of the named principles.

Loved Henry’s smile. The fact that he made all of us shiver and that most of us want to wring his neck just shows how good of a casting job they did with him. He might become my favorite character.

I also saw Michael coming a mile away. Not to sure on the doll trap though. Why would Rousseau use a doll? Seemed more like an Other trap trying to look like a Roussea trap. Can anyone tell if we’ve seen that doll before? Perhaps belonging to the little girl from the Tailie section the same way that the little boy had the stuffed bear?

And it’s about time Kate told Jack about the costumes and beard.

I also like the post equating the flame with a volcanic crater. Opens up some new possibilites.

My major question (besides whether Michael can be trusted and what Henry is up to) is: Does the island engage in selective healing? I hadn’t thought of the “couple-healing” that was posted above, so I’m going to think on that one for awhile. So we have Locke healed almost instantaneously with the crash. Rose healed, but she doesn’t give an island timeframe. Jin possibly healed, depends on whether Sun is telling the truth or not. Sawyer healed fairly quickly for a gunshot wound. Possibly Charlie healed of his addiction but that isn’t clear and possibly Hurley, but also isn’t clear.

Then we have the Marshall who didn’t heal. Boone who didn’t heal. Shannon who didn’t heal. The schoolteacher who didn’t heal (that one I can buy as he was in pieces). The only common link for the healed people is that the affliction occured off the island, while the others occured on the island or during the crash (the marshall). Sawyer was shot post-crash but he was on the raft and not on the island. Any others I’m missing?

Any other thoughts/common denominators on this one?

  24. What made me think was the faith healers comment about random geological properties when it comes to healing people. To summize, he said that his Ayers Rock location could have certain geological properties that makes healing possibe. What struck me is when he mentioned that MAGNETISM could be a property that leads to healing. On the island, there is a huge magnetic source (1st season). Could there be a connection???

  25. the numbers are back “i had 15 people, and now i’m down to 4.” also, did anyone else see the black rock behind jack at the line? it could be the edge of the lava field. does that mean benard crossed the line?

I think Locke is just gullible. He fell for his “Father”’s ploy twice, plus has blind faith in the island. While he may be wise about some things, he is still human, and thus vulnerable.

  27. It appears that Locke is getting ready to search for all the places on the map - I am looking forward to his “explorer” side coming out again. Leaving the hatch for a while gave him some needed perspective and a new mission to think about (and a new friend it seems). Fake Henry just keeps getting more creepy, but I wonder if he would still smile if he knew that Locke was moving on. Now the only question is whether or not the button is going to be abandoned and if that will create a new problem.

Rose and Bernard were sweet as were Sawyer and Vincent. Great to see Michael again too.

With Michael back maybe all the Losties will finally share their collective knowledge. If they all knew what they each know individually about the island and its affects they would be in a better position to go up against the Others. I cannot wait. It seems they are building up to a great finale. I want more!

  28. We all are assuming that the trap Jack and Kate were caught in is a new trap and saying the Frech chick set it… But the trap could have been old and set a long time ago. As we know, there were people on the island before the “Losties” and there seems to be a common theme of them taking kids.. As Roussio said happened to her kid. Maybe that trap was used to catch kids, and thats why they used a doll.

  29. Clearly Locke is getting all confused by Henry. He is playing with his fragile mind. Locke was losing faith in the island learning that Henry never pressed the buttons. He was cleary broken and confused. Once he met with Rose though, his faith in the Island returned and he was smiling back at the computer.

The Island clearly has some kind of powers, Magnetic powers to be exact. Rose’s aussie healer even mentioned it when he was explaining to her that he might be able to heal her and then couldn’t.

  30. I loved this one, because I have been waiting for a flashback with Rose/Bernard for some time, to see what “their secret was”. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to have revealed what the sounds of the monster were (I was waiting for Rose’s backstory to flesh this out)… but I have some thoughts:

    1) Knowing she had some sort of terminal illness (sounds very much like cancer is what they are infering here), someone pointed out that she would probably have gotten a lot of MRI’s–big connection with magneticism and her memory (was this what the familiar sound was?). Couple this with a lovely Season One Easter Egg:
    img493.imageshack.us/img493/40...
    (that says, Magnetic Resonance ImaginING)

    2) Early Easter Eggs possibly:

    a)Isaac’s Wall: lost.cubit.net/pics/2×19/i...
No familiar faces on it, but I think we are meant to see overall patterns. 2 instances of chakra/dharma wheels on the wall (center upper, and left most, both on green cards)–http://sitemaker.umich.edu/tantra/files/wheel2.gif
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_of...

    b) Isaac’s Brochure:
    lost.cubit.net/pics/2×19/i...
Shows there the professional name he took is “Isaac of Uluru”. Look up “Uluru”.. fascinating read — large rock in Central Australia with ascribed sacred qualities by the Aborigines. It is a “magnetic mound”.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uluru

    c) The jeep that Bernard drove had the same license plate as the truck that Essam drove when he wanted to be a suicide bomber (Sayid was set up to do a sting by the CIA). Both scenes were set in Sydney Australia. This is either just a big prop mistake, or hint at a DI conspiracy again.
    lost-media.com/modules/copperm...
    img410.imageshack.us/img410/36...

    d) Locke tried to draw the map on a copy of a French poem, called “Sur les Débuts de Melles Rachel et Pauline” (de Musset, Alfred; 1839). We translated the whole thing–significant symbology about children, religion & dreams; quite a few references to the story, I think.

This site does not allow discussion of the previews. I would recommend http://www.thetailsection.com/ if you are into spoilers. But don’t forget to come back here for discussions on the current and old episodes.

  33. Doll: You know how there are kids with the others? Perhaps it could be an other “trap”. Just my speculation.

Black Rock behind Jack: That rock definately means something. I don’t think the directors would put that huge rock there for nothing.

Kate and Jack getting trapped: Why the heck didn’t they have a knife? Who goes anywhere without a knife….in the jungle. And they have knives. A-L had one and theres gotta be knives in the hatch. It just puzzles me why the first option would be to shoot themselves down besides cutting themselves out. Weird.

  34. did you see the face on the wall on the blue “no crutches” letter on the wall in the healers office just as rose was sitting down, tou have to play it backwards to see it i love my TVO.

  35. So I think everything is covered…holy cow you guys are amazing how you analize all of this!

My question is this….when is Sun going to teach Jin how to speak English and who would be willing to learn Korean!! Let the classes begin!

I think Locke is falling victim to Henry’s spell. Henry is an evil dude with an evil smirk. Folks, that wasn’t a smile, that was a smirk.

As far as the healing goes, I have one theory, with one flaw. The healing seems to happen to the “nice” people. (exception, Sawyer.) AND, the healing seems to be for the injuries or illnesses pre-crash. However, if Locke’s leg heals fast, that will put a hole in that theory.

With the “SOS” on the beach. I was a little disappointed. Why make such a big deal about “three-wide” on the rocks. COMMON SENSE will tell you to make the entire signal with one row… (to get it noticable sooner)… then add the other two rows. Just a glitch in the common sense of how to build a rescue signal.

Anyone else find it funny that Jack had a gun and Sawyer didn’t know?….now THAT was funny.

Having a blast reading all your inputs.
Lost is ABC’s #1 show in my opinion.

Kate had a knife, but Jack wanted to be heard. He wanted the Others to come out so he could make a trade. A knife would have been quiet, plus they couldn’t reach the rope holding them up from where they were.
I find it odd that Jack wanted to trade for Walt and not for Micheal…. wonder what his reason was for that?

  38. Hi! I love reading your thoughts. Did anyone notice when the couples were being shown toward the end and Jin was laying on his side looking at Sun’s stomach and that Sun did not look happy?

We lost the last few minutes of the show. What happened after Jack rolled Michael over? Did Michael yell “Walllllttttt”?

    Thanks.

Ah….i cannot remmeber if this was from the preview of the next episode or happened. Im leaning towards the preview. Im not sure if this is exact, prolly not. But he said something along the lines of:

I found the others. Theres hardly any of them. We can take them. WE CAN TAKE THEM!!! Something like that. And Jack is trying to get guns from sawyer. If i get time I will just review my TiVo. lol.

  41. For anyone that didn’t pick up on it, specifically anyone dissappointed with Locke’s behavior:

You should be dissappointed. He’s gone through all he has only to get abandoned by the island from his perspective. The hatch has given him nothing but trouble since he got inside it and Henry has been compounding this effect on him. Locke isn’t the same Locke from Season One and for a very good reason.

Except of course for what happened in S.O.S. Locke finally leaves the hatch in god knows how long. He gets back in touch with island and when he has the conversation with Rose, you can visibly see the old Locke returning. You even hear his theme music while he’s having his epipheny.

I don’t know whether I’d go this far but it’s possible the hatch (and therefore anything made by Dharma) is evil and the island is a force of good. So all the time Locke spends on the hatch degrades him. All the time Locke spends on the island itself heals him. That’s why there are two different Locke’s. As I said, I don’t know if I buy that just yet since it has a few holes but it’s a possibility.

Either way, for everyone dissappointed in him lately, Locke’s back and I can’t wait to see him in action again.

  42. I find it odd that Jack wanted to trade for Walt and not for Micheal…. wonder what his reason was for that?

Hi, I think the reason is - Jack knows the Others have Walt, but Michael could just be lost in the jungle for all he knows, and I guess the kids safety is more important to him than an adult’s.

I can’t remember Michael being caught/ finding the Others, but there has been a lot of episodes now and my memory aint as good as it should be :)

I know, but it seems like that always happens in tv shows, if locke knew what was good for him he would break both of henrys arms, (not only would it make it hard for him to escape, but it would make me feel better!)

  44. Just updated the original post with my thoughts and ideas. Sorry for the delay guys!

  45. I hope I am not repeating any previous posts but I just found this site and have’t read through all of them

If Henry didn’t push the button in Lockdown (I don’t think he did) then could the resulting alarm have triggered the food drop. Assuming that hatch occupants prior to the survivors really were there by themselves then if the button wasn’t pushed then that could have been an SOS signal of sorts.

I am starting to believe that the hatch is bugged and covered with cameras to watch the interation of the survivors. Meaning that Henry is a plant sent to only stir things up (thinking od his sly grin). Otherwise why would say”If I tell you who they are he will kill me”. How would he know? Unless they are listening.

Did anyone else think that the “healer’s” reaction was similar if not exact as the palm reader for Claire?

    Just Rambling thoughts…

  46. I haven’t noticed anyone else mention it here…

There seem to be some direct and indirect relations to “The Wizard of Oz”.

Henry Gale is Dorothy’s uncles name. He arrived by balloon. The same way Dorothy left Oz. Who can’t see Hurley as the Cowardly Lion? Can Sawyer find a heart? Does Jack have the brains to figure it all out? Is Alvar Hanso the man behind the curtain? She’s a little frightening, but is Russeau “Glenda The Good Witch”? Zeke the “Wicked Witch of the West”? I think we all know who Toto is.

Does that leave Walt as Dorothy?

Is this theory “Over the Rainbow”?

    Comments?

  47. My thoughts on the people shown at the end of SOS and their healing:

    Jim - healed of infertility
Claire/Aaron - possibly Aaron healed in utero
Libby - she was insane, now she’s not
Charlie - he was hanged, was dead, and was brought back to life.

That’s a good point. We still don’t know all of Jacks back story. He made a brief refernce to Tialand which hadn’t been talked about. Many of the others may not have medical conditions but have other emotional problems. Maybe they will be healed of those as well.

  49. I’m from Sweden so we are two eps behind you in the US so its really cool to read about it here..:-)

I don’t know if it is already revealed but if you go to http://www.oceanic-air.com/ and choose Select all, copy and paste into a Notepad or something you’ll get pretty interesting hidden images.

I did it a couple a month ago and there was an airline ticket and now when I did it it was some drawings of a familiary looking boat with initials NY on it and a post card to Walt…Interesting stuff…

  50. Maybe Jack is one of “the others”..?
Maybe everyone is “the others” so the fake beard was so they shouldn’t be recognized by their friends?
    Maybe “the others” are ET:s?
Maybe everyone are ET:s with a mission to adapt to earth?
Maybe they are on another planet?
Maybe they are like in “Vanilla Sky”; a dreamlike world between lifes?
Maybe they are dead and “the others” are angels and devils in Paradise Lost?

    But just maybe…

  51. Orten- THAT was weird… the select all/ paste…

  52. That didn’t work for me…. what was it supposed to be?

  53. Oh wait…. now I see it…. no pictures, just something about ‘I’m stranded on an island, still alive, things are getting worse’. Weird

  54. I liked this episode alot seeing Rose and Bernards relationship and what drives them to do things for each other. There was a great piece of writing when Bernard says to Rose something like “You wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for me.” He realises what he’s said and leaves it at that.

And Locke is different now because at last someone knows how to pick at his brain and get inside him! He always used to be that character but not anymore it seems.

This sounds shallow, but the word magnetism and such associated with it in regards to the island and healing, may just be a metaphor for something else.

I love this blog by the way! It’s so informative and it directs me to further search when i want to. I don’t have to sift through a bunch of random comments like other sites when all i want is one well done theory. Thanks!

Feel free to discuss this post, but please follow these guidelines or your comment may be removed without notification.

  • Read all comments before commenting. If something has already been said, there is no need to say it again.
  • Stay on topic. If your comment is about last week's episode it belongs in that comment thread. Search and find the right post.
  • Be constructive, don't complain about Lost unless you want to discuss your complaint.
  • No spoilers or discussion of episode previews.
  • Be kind and helpful.

Occasionally during peak Lost discussion and/or directly after an episode, your comments may have a slight refresh delay and aren't immediately posted. That should rarely happen, but if a delay occurs, allow a few seconds before refreshing the page to ensure that you don't double post.
