Return dates and mobisodes

Zap2it reports:
“Lost” will return to the schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 7, almost exactly three months after its final fall episode airs Nov. 8. The scheduling strategy is an effort by ABC to avoid repeats of the heavily serialized show; it has three more episodes to go in its initial run this fall and will have 16 weeks of uninterrupted episodes when it returns.
Another serial drama, “Day Break,” will take its place starting Nov. 15.
It will be a bit boring to not get any new episodes until February, but I like the new strategy with new episodes every week once the second part of season 3 starts.
I’m not sure if it’s confirmed, but there has been talk about “mobisodes” during the 16 week break. This is what SciFi Wire wrote about it back in May:
The mobisodes, available exclusively from Verizon in the fall, will be two- or three-minute segments spun off of the main series, Cuse said. He added that producers were able to incorporate the show’s main characters, as played by the series’ stars, as a result of special deals worked out with Touchstone Television, which produces the series, and the various unions representing the show’s talent.
I’ve heard that the “mobisodes” (mobile episodes) will be available on the net some days after they are made available to Verizon customers, but we’ll have to wait for more details.
There are three episodes left in the first part of the third season - Next up is tonight’s episode “Every Man for Himself”.

what the.
why 16 weeks break.
if they make a show to have 24 or esp, why have such a long break, is it cos they have writers block, or to perhaps catch up on the blogs like this one and see if they could use some of the wondeful pieces of info peps have thought or come with, why not have it as 6 esp and have a new season,
when i see most tv shows it works like 1. to the end, why LOST so speacial, to do this, im not from U.S.A is this how u guys do it , cos we dont do, or this just the T.V show lost,

I thought the SciFi channel did an excellent job with this for Battlestar Galactica, showing 10 “webisodes” of backstory in the weeks prior to the Season 3 premiere.

I’m looking forward to the Lost shorts…

wanted, the reason for the break is that during last season, new episodes were not shown every week, instead some weeks there was a new episode, other weeks they just showed an old episode.
This annoyed the fans since the ongoing season lost it’s momentum. To solve this, ABC decided to run new episodes every week, but if I understand things correctly, the break was necessary to start Season 3 in October.
If they hadn’t scheduled a break, the new season wouldn’t have started until sometime in January or February and the summer break from Season 2 would have been much longer.

It takes time to write, shoot and edit the episodes. It’s probably impossible for the cast and crew to create one episode per week so that’s why they need some time ahead of us to create the episodes.

I object to words like “mobisodes”. It seems more likely to be translated as “an episode about a large amount of people gathered to incite violence” than it does “mobile episode”. Abbreviations like that are unnecessary.

They kind of explained the reason for the break on the extras disc of the season 2 dvd. basically saying that it takes 9 days to do an episode and since they dont start shooting until august (so that the actors and crew get the summer off)and the season starts in september; time basically catches up to them and they need the break make sure all the nessesary shots are in each show instead of rushing it by running two or three crews at once.
i think if they were to shoot them all at once they run the risk of massive leaks getting out. the 16 weeks will be rough, but its alot better than the torture that was last season. you didnt know what was happening week to week.

What does it have to do with political correctness? I thought it had to do with reading comprehension and pronunciation. But if you want to make spurious connections, fine by me.

Letting it go…we are supposed to keep this about Lost.

You do understand what it’s supposed to mean don’t you Andy? If you do, is it really necessary to “object” to the word just because it CAN be interpreted in a different way?
A lot of words can be interpreted in different ways but we interpret them in a certain way because we are used to the words being used in that context.
By the way, the term “Mobisode” is trademarked by Fox so it’s possible that the episodes will be called something else when released by ABC.

Actually I think they said it takes 9-10 days to *shoot* an episode, but 24 or so days to include writing, building sets, shooting, post-production, etc. And the time does catch up with them, like you said.

The reason for the break is because of a few things…
Many of the casual fans did not know when a new episode would come on. They would turn on the tv and a repeat would be showing. The hardcore fans, of course knew when a new episode was coming…though it was frustrating. Not as frustrating as NOT knowing when a new episode aired.
The Writing and production team took hardly any time off during the summer and started writing back in June for Season 3. Since it takes time to shoot each episode, they simply did not have enough time to do all of the episodes during the Summer. Lost is a hit show and they wanted to hit both sweeps. It was either a break or doing them all at once starting in Oct (not enough time) or January (too long of a break)…so they opted for the break in the Season. They are handling this portion as a mini season with it’s own arc and cliffhanger. This mini has an overarcing story that will continue after the break.
My take on the best thing they could have done, was to come back in Oct and run straight through and avoiding American Idol all together

The reason I objected was because I read the post title and thought “mobisode, what the heck is that?” So no, I didn’t immediately know what it meant. That’s why I objected to it. Why not just call it mobile episode and why especially trademark it? Either way I didn’t mean to cause a disruption or expect to be attacked for offering my opinion. And for that I’ll refrain from saying anything more.

As I understand it the break is about $. A show like “Lost” with at least 14 regular characters and an expensive location, is very very pricey to make. They make fewer episodes so they have to stretch the season out. This is a problem with several other TV shows as well.
Another concern is that audience share is down 20% from last year. This season isn’t generating the same “heat” as last year.

How do you guys come up with these very confidential network statistics?
On a separate note, I was told by someone that the first SEVEN seasons have already been written. I thought for some reason that the entire Season 3 has already been shot. It’s news to me to learn that it’s all fresh, and that at this very moment, they could be shooting something I will watch in February.
Wow.

I think the 20% was reported in the media some week back.
Regarding seven seasons being written already, I don’t believe that is true. Damon and Carlton have talked about having outlined several seasons, but the episodes themselves have not been written.
Comment 24, posted 2 years, 2 months ago - Quote and reply
Agreed.
Too bad, If it were true, you could guarantee some sort of continuity for the first 7 years. But since they’re writing these episodes ad-hoc, they may lose motivation or drive down the road because of the show’s unexpected popularity and subsequent fame and riches.

They annouced this schedule before the season started…so I don’t think 20% reduction has anything to do with it.
