Further Instructions
3 years, 10 months ago by AndreasRead more: Lost Episodes
With the focus on The Others, nothing has yet been revealed about the characters on the beach. Are Locke, Eko and Desmond alive? Will Hurley make it back to camp and what will he tell the other survivors?
Jack, Kate and Sawyer are held captive and Sayid, Sun and Jin lost their boat to The Others. Is all hope lost?
This is the official description of tonight’s Lost episode entitled “Further Instructionsâ€:
The fates of Locke, Eko and Desmond are revealed after the implosion of the hatch.
While you wait for the episode to air, check out our Lost Theory Competition for a chance to win some really nice prizes.
Note to everyone: Please discuss the interesting events of Further Instructions in this thread. I’m writing a post with focus on the less satisfactory parts where we can discuss why the episode didn’t meet our expectations.

wow…my brain just ploded. so um, what was with the deja vu and the speech? who are these new folx on the beach? clearly fusies or tailies since everyone was familiar with them. what happened after Locke let the cop get away? I don’t remember them leaving us hanging quite that precipitously in any previous flashback co-plot. was Echo awake or did Locke just hear what he needed to? still probably trippin. is it cool or what that Locke worked on a weed farm? woo hoo!

I’m getting frustrated: nothing significant happens in a given LOST episode anymore. The show just juggles its dangling threads and loose ands while keeping us on drip feed.
LOST is losing me.
Comment 3, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
I’m just trying to figure out where in Locke’s timeline this flashback fits. He mentions his crappy family so it’s obviously post re-uniting with his kidney-stealing dad. But is it pre or post-Helen? I’m leaning toward post, since he talks about not being angry anymore, and he meets her in anger management. But then again, he could easily get angry after the whole Hippy Commune fiasco, leading him to anger management and back to his dad and all that….
Where does it fit?
Comment 4, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
What the hell is up with the two new characters? Were they just in the background the whole time? Were they tailies? It is going to be pretty lame if the just became major characters after (supposedly) being in the background the whole time.
Comment 5, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
I was a little jarred by those characters too. I remember seeing the guy announced on here, so I guess he’ll be major. I don’t remember the girl. But announced or not, it was a little weird to suddenly have these two new faces there, all introduced, as if we should just accept their importance.

Okay everybody is back…even Boone came back. I am not buying the whole eat mudd and talk to the dead thing. I am with Charlie, Get off the wild horse Locke!
Personally I think Echo could take that bear. Where is the monster? still lurking about so keep your eyes and ears open.
I think Desmond can see the future…brother.
Hurley…is he still thinking about those numbers?
Did we just get introduced to 2 new losties?
Is the Hatch really gone? Is Ben going to paint on another hatch door that there has been another incident 2004?
Load up Locke and head for the book club!
Comment 7, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
So any thoughts on the mention of “Geronimo Jackson” in tonights episode? Signifigance or merely producers having fun?
Comment 8, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
Who is the guy that played Mike, the weed farmer? I know its not Tom, but he reminded me of him. He’s a recognizable actor.. I just know where from. Any ideas?
As for the episode, I was left kinda feeling ‘eh’. But the great thing about Lost is that the writers always make it up to you.
What about the previews for next week. Ben kicking the poop out of Sawyer. (Cant wait to see how thats gonna work.. we all know that Sawyer is badass)
Also, if your keeping a tally of who on the island has killed someone and who hasn’t…. you can put John on the “good person” side. It seems pretty significant when someone is told they are a ‘good person’.
Comment 9, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
Tonight’s episode seemed incredibly short to me. I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Either-way, it ended so quick that I thought I had missed something.
The CGI polar bears look pretty terrible. Most of the effects on the show are very well done, but they suck at making polar bears look real. At times it looked like a big barking dog.
I agree that I don’t recall any previous flashbacks being left as open-ended as this one. The writers are having fun us fans with the popular theory that every one of the survivors had killed someone before the crash. We’d yet to see Locke kill anyone, and they dangled it in front of us but never really gave it to us, in typical Lost fashion. Not to mention, we STILL don’t know how he lost the use of his legs. I thought we were going to get it tonight after he saw the wheelchair in the sweat lodge.
Overall I was a bit let down by this episode as this storyline is probably my favorite of them all. I love Locke and I love the mystery of the island itself yet tonight they didn’t really give us much other than Locke finding where the polar bears live.
Desmond suddenly can predict/see the future, interesting and cool. Clearly he just gained this ability, otherwise he’d have forseen all that has happened in the past ~69 days.
We also got another case of: “You can’t tell me what I can do.” This time courtesy of Charlie, to Locke. More fuel for the “free will” fire.

Did anyone else notice that the airport vision depicted real life situations? sayid with jin and sun, desmond on his own, jack sawyer and kate together. But the wierd thing is that Ben linus worked for the airport and so did hurley! still fixated on the numbers. This stands out to me cause they specifically put his name on michaels list of people to bring just to send him home. I think the vision showed his future connection with the others, who I think really are the good guys and hurleys gonna be some sort of hero, or otherway around, a real bad guy. Either way hes connected to the others.

I was on the dge of my seat the whole night. Great episode!
What was with the Tonka truck in the bear cave? What else does desmond see/know? He knew of the speech, but it did not look like he was paying attention. I still want to know how Locke was paralyzed? It was so good to see Boone again.

That’s so interesting. It also looked like Desmond was wearing a pilot’s uniform. Could he have been with the Others from the time he first left Jack in the hatch to the time they found him in the boat?

I was intrigued by the cryptic comments Boone left…
“No, they’ll be fine… for now.”
“Sorry, you can’t help them… yet.”
“Nope, he’s helping himself.”
“Naw, I’m not bitter that you charmed me into wedging myself into a Cessna and died from it. Water under the bridge.”
That last part wasn’t word for word, but it was implied.

Well, he did not kill anyone (or at least we don’t think he did) but he is now officially on the criminal list. And how naive to bring a stranger to the commune (so trusting is Locke). But it looks like Obi-Locke is officially back! I agree the flashback seemed “unfinished” but I am sure we will get a payback that is worth it. Cannot wait to view again and see everything that I missed!
Comment 16, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
Here’s a guess at the symbology of the airport sequence. Desmond was the pilot because he was the one who brought them to the island. Ben was the security checker, probing Jack for information, Kate and Sawyer are next. And then Hurley, because he was effectively working for the others as he was delivering their message, but also because he was shrouding in the karma of the numbers, which kept bringing the back luck…
Comment 17, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
I was kind of disappointed with the show last night. You would have thought the two new characters, plus Charlie and Claire, would have been far more worried/vocal about the aftermath of hatch blowing up (earthquake and pink sky); Locke & Eko missing afterwards; plus being without Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley, not to mention Syaid, Jin and Sun!
I wasn’t very happy with the explanation of what happened in the Hatch. If something implodes, it collapes upon itself, which would mean that the guys in the hatch would have been burried–not thrown up into the air. I couldn’t understand what Desmond was saying (brother!) when talking about what happened after he turned the key. I’ll have to go back and listen to it again.
Question: I assume that, since there is no longer a hatch and button to push, the huge electromagnetic field, which was keeping Desmond’s sailboat “anchored” to the island, is now gone (that’s why the signal suddenly reached the monitoring guys who then called Penny at the end of S. 2). There is nothing to stop boats from leaving the island, or possible rescuers (like Penny) finding the island. Would you agree?
Scene w/ polar bear was poorly done. Obviously, if bear was pulling on Mr. Eko’s leg, while Locke was pulling the other way, then Mr. Eko’s leg would be chopped liver.
So, the three guys in the hatch when it blew are Locke (who had been a “farmer” with the pot farm, but is now the “hunter” on the island), Desmond (who can now see the future) and Mr. Eko (mauled by the polar bear). Locke had his “Boone/airport” vision in the sweat lodge (I agree with Jason about the symbolism–Ben checking out Jack, with Kate and Sawyer next in line, etc.) Locke found a toy tonka truck in bear’s den, plus lots of bones. Hmmmmmmm… Did it once belong to Ben or one of the Others?
Near the end of the show, somebody said “go to the kitchen and get water and bandages,” which seemed weird. (Writer screw-up?)
I think Locke’s time on the pot farm was post-Helen and kidney-stealing dad. How did he end up in a wheel chair????
Can’t friggin wait until next week’s show…it seemed as if Ben was asking Kate “Do you love this man” and beating the snot out of Sawyer. Whoo hoo!

Regarding the bones in the cave. One of the skeletons was wearing a Dharma logo.
Also, once I remember in one of my Psych classes the professor addressed the topic of foresight as follows: He said that there is a theory people who are able to predict the future see time from a different perspective that regular folks do. It’s kinda like seeing from a vantage point. The farther up in space you go the more of the world you can see. The same applies to time. The broader your mind and senses can get the farther in time you will be able to see. This of course given the constant that the past, present, and future is all happening at the same time. Then if you spy from a high point it’s like looking into your neighbors back yard from a tree in yours. I think that Desmond got that ability because of the magnetic surge, that’s why he knew about Locke’s speech.

I’m losing my motivation to watch the next episode. The previews made it look lame, the commercials are intolerable, and the plot thinner than ever.
I’ve had it with the commercials and the all the open can of worms. I can’t even keep up with all the ‘hope they explain that soon’ moments anymore. I think they should at least put some closure on issues we watched in the first season instead of creating more mysteries at this stage in the show. Heck, even flashbacks are now incomplete.
Realistically, would the show’s ratings go down if they explained the origin of the polar bears? Give us SOMETHING
Looking back at the first two seasons, this is the least meaningful & informative and shortest season yet. It should not take 3 episodes for us to catch a glimpse of an imploded hatch or to see the two Portuguese at the station. They’re unnecessarily milking the audience at this point. I know I’m not anymore likely to signup for an American Express because of last night’s show (anyone seen this? http://www.abc.com/lost Pathetic).
I just hope for their sakes that they come up with unbelievable finale as the level of expectation is at an all time high.
Comment 20, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
Ummm…where to start? Still the best show on TV by far, these guys are getting sloppy with the writing. This is an epedemic that derailed once former great shows like the X-Files and Alias, where you start to spin out so many possible theories that it become impossible if not impalusible to tie together in any reasonable fashion. And though we’ve all accepted the “mystical” qualities of the island on good faith even though it turns out to be a corporate owned experimantal amusement park, I wonder how that ties into all the “mystical” events that took place off the island before the losties crashed and arrived. (The numbers, the coincidental meetings and path-crossings, etc)
I’m confident they will bring it all around much like they did the last half of last season after a slow start. But I hope they have a focused plan and don’t fall into the trap of the previous mentioned shows. Which is, to get so “Lost” in your storyline, you start inexplicably answering questions just to tie up loose ends. Ok. I’m done ranting.
By the way, Boone’s reappearance made me remember what a raw deal he got!

Alright, first things first. eddie had narc written all over him from the word go. then to top it off he was too interested in the greenhouse. if hes just a regular dude he wouldnt care.
eko talking to locke seemed alot like sarah talking to jack in the OR. i see desmond taking a more active role of leading (ie: pilot uni). his “psychic” ability was probably cause by the electromagnetic field surrounding the island “throwing” him forward, then back, in time. similar to hugos deja vu. i think certain losties will be able to not really see the future but predict it if certain criteria are met. kind of like dominoes. the first one has to fall before the second and third will. i think ben has this ability and thats why he watches all of those moniters we saw in the second episode. he knows exactly what to do to jack, kate, and sawyer to “push their buttons”, because hes studied them for two months. just like when he was being held in the swan. he was in control the whole time because he knew what they were going to do before they did. like in the opening scene of the first episode he knew exactly what to do when they saw the plane crash.
i have a feeling lockes past is alot more checkered than we thought and that he will run into eddie again at some point and know exactly what to do. a hunter does not let prey escape twice. its on eddie. jonny locke’s back on the path. so whatcha gonna do when lockemania runs wild on you, brother:)

Agreed KillerR, I think Locke gets hurt during a run in with Eddie. It looked like injured legs in the tent more than a paralyzed type thing.
Comment 24, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
mmmmmmm, Boone…..
I thought we knew, or at least were pretty sure, that the polar bears were there for dharma to do gene therapy on? Or was that just an assumption I made from TLE?
I assumed that Locke’s timeline had just continuted from when we last saw him. I mean, what better way to get over being conned by your dad and losing your girlfriend than to join a hippie commune?
I thought it was interesting that Eddie said to John almost the same thing that the other was saying to Sun in last weeks episode. “You’re not going to shoot me. You’re a good person.”
Comment 25, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
Yeah, froggirl…if they don’t start explaining why there are so many people saying the same things…I’m going to assume the writers can’t think of any new dialog to write.:)

Alright here is what I liked about the episode:
Great acting by Terry O’Quinn, he did a great job throughout the entire episode.
It was fun to see “the regulars” again and I liked Locke going back to being a hunter.
The airport scene was awesome.
Desmond’s new “power” is very interesting. I wonder if it will last or if it was just a temporary thing caused by the implosion.
I liked Locke’s flashback and Eddie was cool.
Comment 27, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
Wasn’t Charlie in the hatch trying to get Eko out just before the implosion?
Locke & Desmond were in the interior of the hatch. Locke had shut the doors to keep Eko out. Eko was trying to dynamite the door open so he could push the button. Charlie was trying to get Eko out before the dynamite went off.
Help me out here, please.

A few months back cecilia started a thread on same (or similar) dialogue from different charcters. it was pretty interesting and while reading it i had a “flashback” of a note taking course i had in middle school. my teacher stressed the importance of facts teachers would repeat.
i believe if we could revist that, update it, and get some kind of chart or spreadsheet going with the whos, whats, whens, and wheres it would make more sence to us. these writers arent stupid. if we’re picking it up they certainly are picking it up. i think we will start to find out what a good person to the others is in the 17 episodes this winter. or possibly in the episodes about juliette or ben. we know theyre coming.
Comment 29, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
OK, so there is a lot can be said about this episode, but the main thing is, WTF HAPPENED AT THE HATCH??? It’s great that everyone survived and now has some sort of weird power, but how/why/what happened? How did they get out? why didn’t anyone care? As my sister just said ” no kidding. i mean, a hatch door drops out of the sky. ho hum, right?”
SO there is a whole variety of unanswered dilemmas. Eko was presumably very near the dynamite blast, but survived to be dragged off by the bear. Was he hurt by the bear or the blast? If it was the bear, and he wasn’t dead yet, why didn’t the bear kill him or eat him or whatever (there was that reference to the other kill the bear ignored). And the bear cave — bones with DHARMA logo (but wasn’t the logo different than the real one?) and the toy truck, implying the bear ate kids, and that there WERE kids, at somepoint — interesting given the others obsession with kids. But there has to be a reason they brought back the bears (other than the obvious reference to the multiple bears once in the others’ cages). Perhaps the tie-in has to do with Hurley, who is clearly become the true center of the mystery.
Another interesting point — it seemed pretty clear that when CHarlie came back from the hatch explosion, he was deaf, but this went away so only temporary. Locke was temporarily mute. Perhaps they all had some aspect of their senses altered, which would allow for the new abilities they seem to have developed.
I think this episode, since it softballed the return of the three explodees, is setting up for some earthshaker (possibly a flashback, of course) later on that will explain what happened. This is highly irritating, of course, but nonetheless. It will probably have to do with time, in some aspect. We have the show, which is in island-time. The lost experience, which was in real time. The two have to be reconciled at some point…
I still want to know what happened at the Hatch. Stupid show! But at least the Boone airport sequence was intriguing food for thought.

Seems like a lot of disorietation was happening. Charlie came back to camp acting strange and didn’t know where Locke, Eko and Dez were. The reason people weren’t asking about them is because we are to assume that last night’s epi happened just after the implosion. I don’t think they even knew what was happeing in the hatch to ask.
I think Dez was pulled in because he is the only one stripped of his clothes and he went down into a “sub” hatch to get to where the key goes. (By the way, it was cheezy with him standing on the shore throwing rocks with Hurly’s huge shirt on…).

Where do I begin? I want to know how Desmond woke up w/o clothes. What’s the deal with the toy truck in the bear’s den? Why wasn’t Eko all torn up from the tug of war? Where the heck did Locke get hairspray? How did Desmond know about Locke’s speech, shrugged it off to Hurley, and wasn’t even listening when it was actually made? Locke did not shoot the cop, but we still don’t know how he ended up in a wheelchair (maybe we’ll find out some year). Lastly (for now), I have to say that I so don’t like those two newbies up in Locke’s face. Why didn’t we see some of the regular characters? Where are the husband & wife?

Seeing the group back on the beach was almost anti-climax after last season’s finale. They didn’t seem concerned about anything – the explosion, Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Sayid & Co. Kind of a let down. They’re losing me on Locke too. Vision quest – come on. I wish the writers would expend a little more energy on Sayid. His character is getting lost. No pun intended.
Charlie just pisses me off, he’s such a jerk. I wouldn’t trust him within ten feet of my baby.
I am wondering why Edmonde lost his clothes but Locke and Ecko didn’t. Weren’t they in the same vicinity?
I heard a rumor that they may kill Sawyer off. Sawyer and Hurley are my favorite characters. They are handling everything the way most real people would. Hurley with humor and Sawyer with a “this is bull*!#~ let’s kick some butt” attitude. They will definately lose this viewer if they kill or send off either one of them.
Comment 34, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
Even if Further Instructions takes place immediately after the s2 finale and the losties on the beach weren’t aware that Locke, Eko, Charlie and Desmond where having a party in the hatch, shouldn’t they be worried about the bright light, the quake and the quarantine door falling from the sky?
Regarding the time of Locke’s flashback I agree that it’s probably the latest flashback from his past we’ve seen yet, taking place after being abandoned by both his father and Helen. What struck me in the flashback was that once again John Locke was used by someone. He is the kind of person who wants to believe in things, and people are using that to deceive him.
Note to everyone: Please discuss the interesting events of Further Instructions in this thread. I’m writing a post with focus on the less satisfactory parts where we can discuss why the episode didn’t meet our expectations.

I sat down and watched each episode with drool coming out over the course of 4 days. Now that I’m all caught up and watching it on TV with everyone, I’m more suceptible to the irritating commercial breaks and the idea of watching 40min a week rather than just popping the next one in :)
It is also the *only* show I watch on Television.
Question, how did Hurley manage to walk so fast from the other side of the island (where the dock is) without being disoriented, lost, eaten, or exhausted? Sayid & the couple claim it will take days of walking to get return after their boat was hijacked.
Also, the countdown clock was deep in the Bear’s cave. Only two methods to get it there: Either Eko held it in his hand while being dragged by the bear, or the bear brought it there in its mouth somehow? Perhaps a potential third explanation, a person(s) visit the Bear’s cave frequently?
Last one, promise. Locke did not leave the beach area with the *metal* hairspray (I rewund). There is no hatch from which to grab supplies, so how and where on earth did he get that can so suddenly? Since it’s metal, it would have collapsed in the hatch (if that’s where it came from). Otherwise, where would passengers of a crashed plan get Hairspray (and a notepad/marker for that matter). Just how much junk did that plane contain and where have they been storing all that? Seemed kindda McGyver…

I have to say that I agree with those who argue that LOST is getting bogged down in its own plot twists and losing the immediacy that we all fell in love with in season one. Not only has the plot lost some of its momentum, but the characters themselves seem to have lost their drive to solve the mysteries of the island, or escape from the island! They’re complacent, they call their strip of beach ‘home’ (part of Locke’s speech to bring back Jack, Sawyer and Kate).
That said, there is still more than enough (action, mystery, emotion) for me to feed off while the writers dust their pencils off and get into the swing of things again.
And this episode wasn’t a total waste. Locke’s vision sparked thoughts about Hurley’s relation to the Others. As Matt pointed out, Hurley worked for the airline, as did that most nefarious of Others, Ben. Does this merely mean that Hurley’s numbers led the losties to the island? Or does it imply something more sinister about the relationship of Hurley to the Others? Am I really jumping to conclusions if I speculate that Hurley is an Other himself? The ultimate traitor? Or perhaps an unwitting one…
One other speculation: The glimpses we have gotten of the Others’ habitation have been mysteriously devoid of children. If they are the ones who have been kidnapping all the children (ie. the tailies’ kids), then where are they? In another thread someone was discussing the idea that there are a group of renegade children, formerly held captive (?) by the Others that have somehow escaped and are living on the island. This group may include the Danielle’s daughter: the girl who spoke to Kate in s3e2 and rescued a pregnant Claire from the Others. It may also include the boy that was in the cages with Sawyer, who attempted escape. Perhaps the toy truck that Locke found in the bear’s cave is evidence of the existence of these renegade children.

Given the airport scene and the Tonka truck, we can all agree that it takes very little to spark up a new mystery and have us all wonder our butts off for a week.
This is why I urge the writers to put closure on some ancient mysteries and create new ones rather than blow our minds to yogurt every week to the point where we no longer care about (or keep track of) unsolved mysteries in Season 1.
A mystery loses its effect when it remains unsolved for so long. It’s the difference between “oh yeah.. i remember that i think” and “NO F’IN WAY!! “

There was a reference above about Locke saying “we will bring them home,” and then I remembered that is what Ben told Jack at end of last show, where he promises to take Jack home if he cooperates. More poop for the mystery bucket.

ok – i have a hard enough time getting a raw-hide bone out of my 30lb dog’s mouth, but a polar bear… ?
Desmond backtracked & realized he shouldn’t have said what he said right away, so if he can see the future, why didn’t he see himself saying it and making that mistake. And whatever else he sees in the future must be good, b/c tossing rocks aimlessly is an act of carefree boredom.
hurley at this point should be the most freaked out about the events of the last 3 days – he’s got to say wtf is going on here?

To me, this episode was definitely like a “meanwhile….” By that I mean, I think that what we saw in this episode is happening at the same time as the previous two episodes. So basically I’m agreeing with the opinion that this has happened immediately after last season’s end.
I’d really like to know what’s been going on at the hatch. It seems weird to me that Des doesn’t have his clothes- it makes me feel like there is definitely something more to what is happening. I am more under the opinion that he was stripped of his clothes, by another person, for some reason or another. Obviously not all of the Others were on the deck at the time- perhaps they were some near the camp, to keep them from following Jack, etc with Michael? Obviously Locke was busy at the time, but he could have easily tracked behind the group if he had wanted to follow them. I think that there were Others waiting in case someone tried to follow.
That being said, perhaps Eko wasn’t captured by the bear- maybe he was captured, and then “given” to the bear- he’s obviously not in their good favor considering he killed two of them. If he was unconscious after the “implosion” he could have been dragged there by someone else. Also- the tonka truck makes me think that it isn’t the first time someone has been led to the bear’s den. Maybe a hint at where all those poor children went.
On the other side of the spectrum, in regard to the polar bear- WAS it real? Did Charlie ever see it? I don’t recall, but I wouldn’t be suprised if it was a hallucination of Locke’s, and he simply found an unconcious Eko and dragged him to “safey.” I do think that what Eko said to Locke was a hallucination as well.
More thoughts later after I re-watch the episode.

I’m in agreement with MK and others than we need to get some questions answered before they can bring up new mysteries. At the finale of season 2, we found out that people off island (possibly Desmond’s old girlfriend?) have caught some type of signal from the island. This gives the whole story and island some new context and direction, and yet in first three episodes of season three there has been no reference to this. This is not acceptable.
Last night’s episode was about Locke “cleaning up after himself”. In the situation with his new “family†at the hippie commune, he did not clean up after himself, because he was not able to kill Eddie. Locke redeems himself on the island because this time is cleaning up the mess he made by not pressing that button and causing the implosion of the hatch/destruction of the electromagnetic barrier. Fine, still we wonder how did he get in a wheelchair. Is that so much to ask for? Desmond’s precognition probably related to one of the Dharma experiments, no? I don’t remember any Dharma experiments related to the other senses, but there’s clearly something there.
Regarding the new random characters introduced in episode 3, no new characters please! We already have dozens of characters we feel like we know but may not really know. And characters who we haven’t heard from in a while who need to be developed more. New characters on the beach would be a total joke.
Finally, I’ve found that in my viewing of Lost these three episodes, I’ve been content when the characters are actively seeking answers to these fundamental questions–where are they, who are the others?, what is/was the hatch, how can they get back home, etc. What I can’t stand and what I think is unrealistic is when they start getting complacent, i.e. start getting involved in romances or gardening. If they are at least seeking answers, I’m okay.

In refernce to above –
Desmond backtracked & realized he shouldn’t have said what he said right away, so if he can see the future, why didn’t he see himself saying it and making that mistake. And whatever else he sees in the future must be good, b/c tossing rocks aimlessly is an act of carefree boredom.
1. When Desmond is tossing the rocks, he definately does not look carefree… I think he looked ‘spooked’.
Either he knows about something bad that is going to happen, and since he can’t stop it, he’s just killing time until then throwing rocks.
Or, his mind is going a mile a minute, because he knows now he can possibly sail away due to the magnetic pull of the island being disrupted – but he can’t even see if his theory would work, because his boat is being used at the moment by Sun, Jin and Sayid – and so he is anxious that escape could be so close, yet so far.
2. Locke wakes up, Desmond is running around naked and the polar bear has dragged off Eko. Did anyone notice that while all this is happening, poof!, Eko’s stick falls out of the air? Why did it fall after the 3 people have already been on the ground for a while?
Also, if the implosion blew off the hatch ‘quarantine lid’ and in the same way our 3 people and the stick, how come other stuff from the hatch has not been expelled and found?

First, let me start off with something good to say. I read this blog after every episode of LOST. I love it! Its helpful, and you guys come up with good theories and remind me about things Ive forgotten. Now the bad. Ive watched LOST since the beginning, and its my favorite show on tv, but I thought last nights episode was terrible! Im not diggin the whole Locke goin all spiritual and talkin to the island. Boone looked different to me. I thought Boone had shorter hair, and it looked like a different actor to me.How did the 3 survive the hatch imploding? Im sorry, but I HATE Locke. I would be glad to see him die. I would have rather him died than Ana Lucia or Libby. The polar bear looked horrible, Eko would have been torn apart. More questions, no answers. And whats up with the unfinished flashback!?!?!?! I can kinda understand not answering questions in the main part of the show, but in a flashback? And I thought the flashback was pretty pointless anyways. But I did like Eddy.I thought the preview for next episode looked pretty gay. “do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.do you love this man? yes i love this man.”
How many times did they have to say that!?!? Before long my parrot will learn that. That would actually be pretty cool, but still. The LOST makers better redeem themselves. More Desmond please! I Love Desmond!

It just occurred to me that, similar to last week, the title of the episode doesn’t have much significance at first glance. I’ve been trying to attach the title to something in the episode, but can’t come to something worthwhile. Any thoughts about why it’s called “Further Instructions”?
Comment 57, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
Wow! Locke believes the Island is trying to talk to him. Or are there psychics somewhere on the island trying to warn the Oceanic 815 survivors?
Froggirl mentioned polar bears. Charlie said that polar bears are the Einsteins of the bear world, according to the “Beeb” (BBC?) Boone said “They’ve got him (Eko)”, so I guess there are *several* really smart and dangerous bears running loose. Yikes!
Todd Sanders had a great observation about conversing with trees. So I observe that in Lost, EVERYTHING happens for a reason.
I think the newbies names were Paulo and Nikkie.
The toy in the bear cave seems to be an allusion to children, danger, and maybe construction on the island. (It’s a dump truck, not a racing car or a stuffed animal.) But construction of what — a runway, a landing zone, or a replacement for the electromagnetic device in the hatch?
Numerology: Eddie the cop (Edward Colburn of
Humboldt County) has ID number 84023. More Hurley/hatch numbers.
If the police can profile civilians like Locke,
who was “amenable to coercion”, it is plausible that highly trained specialists planted on the island could profile and target specific survivors. Nice parallel.
Although this connection seems convoluted, Petula Clark, who sang the tune to which Juliet was listening titled “Downtown” (composed by Tony HATCH) had a second career as an actress. She was even in an Andrew Lloyd Webber play (1995, 1996, 1998-2000), and her character’s name was Norma DESMOND. (See petulaclark.net under Theater.) I love that song!
In Episode 3, Desmond Hume is seen running away from the hatch again, but this time he is naked and bloody. It is as if he were born again. See you in another life, brother!

The hatch door closes in such a way that it cannot be sucked in. The rest of the hatch collapsing around it squeezed the entryway and made it pop out.
Now, how did humans being so fragile, seemed to get off easily with just a few cuts and bruises?
Comment 60, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
“Monica”, I think Eko’s stick fell out of a tree not the sky.
“Are there any women”, that is the same actor playing Boone, he’s just cleaned up alot. Can’t miss those eyes. Someone said that Locke wasn’t cleaning up what happened at the commune because he didn’t shoot Eddie. Locke said people got hurt because of him (or around him). I would venture to guess that Eddie was hurt at the commune and Locke feels responsible since he brought him in. Or the commune gets taken down Waco style and lives were lost. I think it seems strange to believe that Locke is the “strong warrior with the answers” on the island when he has been dead wrong about so many things in the past. Also, I thought Locke lost the use of his legs in a car crash. Am I wrong?
I agree that Edmonde seemed pretty relaxed at the beach. Seemed resigned to wait…for what? Walt had some “abilities” and now Edmonde does. What did they call it when the military tried to use psychics to “see” remote locations to gather intelligence? Remote viewing? Walt could certainly do that.
Comment 61, posted 3 years, 10 months ago -
Okay, this is a random thought. Edmonde and Eko were covered in blood but Locke wasn’t. I think Eko was bloodied by the bear. Was Edmonde bloody with his own blood or maybe not? The stick was covered in blood – had to have gotten bloody before it went flying up into a tree. What happened with Edmonde and Eko in between the time the hatch blew and the stick went flying into the air? Time glitch? Did the bear attack and both fought him. I think Edmonde is trying to sort out what he is remembering from that time.

Yes, I meant Desmond not Edmonde.

I feel dumb. Was remote viewing on the original Hanso website as a project? I don’t remember it but I lost interest over the summer so maybe I missed that. I had not seen this site that lists it as a project until just now.

yes they were all inside but the electromagnetic field not so much protected, but surrounded them. think about it they are on an island who wants the others off and that’s why the plane crashed, so it could start over.

Did anyone else notice that Locke’s long, haired pot farmer friend from the flash back and Zeke from the others(used to wear a fake beard) look like the same person. The resemblance is easier to catch if you look at screen-grabs of both characters.

Considering other things….
I think Ecko was bloody anyway, before the hatch did whatever it is it dad (I still have no clue). Remember the explosion on the season 2 finale? He was already pretty banged up.
I don’t remember anyone saying Locke got in a wheelchair because of a car crash.
I am almost sure that however he lost his ability to walk will have SOMETHING to do with SOMEONE we have seen, whether its a survivor, others, or some other person from someone’s past.
I like Locke as a character, although he does drive me carzy sometimes. I think that he holds a key to aalmsot everything going on. I still rememebr the first or maybe second episode…where he teaches Walt about…was it Backgammon?…and he says the “good” vs “Evil.”
Hmmmm. and abouyt Hurley. If he was in the crazy house with Libby….and Libby was an other…if she even was…I am starting to think she wasn’t, then maybe that is how they are connected? What was up with the ending? Even Hurley looked a little weird.

Monica said, “2. Locke wakes up, Desmond is running around naked and the polar bear has dragged off Eko. Did anyone notice that while all this is happening, poof!, Eko’s stick falls out of the air? Why did it fall after the 3 people have already been on the ground for a while?”
And MK responded, “The stick got caught in the tree. The right gust of wind made it drop from the tree. How it got there is a total mystery. It should have been heavily damaged regardless.”
But there is also the writing on Eko’s stick. Here is what I think is written there: Near the top left is (I think) “Hab. 1.3″ If that is what it says this would be Habakkuk 1.3 which reads “Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds.”
In the top left is also a partial quote from (also scratched in) Gen. 13.14 “Lift up your eyes and look north…”
In the upper right is “John 3:05″ which is very strange because you would never see a Bible passage so referenced. It would normally be “John 3:5″ Why 3:05??
Also on the right side, but upside down is “Acts 4.12″. This one is very interesting since it meshes with what John later asks Eko after he has “saved” him from the Polar Bear cave. Acts 4.12 is “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” This, of course refers to Jesus Christ – but does John apply it to himself? Is this why he laments to Eko that he “could have saved them” to which Eko replies, “…you still can save them” ???
Nearer to the bottom and I the left is “Rom. 6.12″ which is “Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal bodies so that you obey its evil desires.”
Of course, at the very bottom of the scratched on section are some of “the numbers”, 4:8:15
Are all of these verses part of the “Further Instructions” of this episode?

Thank you for posting the writing on Eko’s stick Pastor2churches.
What if “Lift up your eyes and look north – John 3:05″ is “John, lift up your eyes and look north” or a similar very direct instruction for Locke?

They probably survived the hatch implosion the same way they survived the plane ripping apart in mid-air.

Indeed! Perhaps a compass direction is meant. Someone else may want to clarify, but I believe NW begins at heading 310. From 270 up to 309 would be increments of W. (WNW [West North West]) being 300, I think). So…305 would be part of “look West”. Interestingly, Genesis includes all the Cardinal directions: “Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west.”

One significant thing that hasn’t been discussed yet is the new faces on Lost. Paulo and Nikki, specially Paulo.
The thing is, the guy that plays Paulo (Rodrigo Santoro) is a famous brazilian actor (I’m brazilian – very happy about watching him on Lost). By the name of his character and also, in a interview Rodrigo said that producers weren’t concerned about his accent, so my guess is Paulo is a brazilian and gosh, this has to have something to do with the portuguese-speaking guys at the end of the second season.
oh, another something: in that same interview, Rodrigo hinted that his character will grow in the series, he has a past, mabe will have an episode with flashbacks on himself, so he is significant.
