Minor Spoilers

Writing a Lost episode

2 years ago by Andreas

There is a really interesting article over at post-gazette.com about how a Lost episode is written.

Former Lost writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach explains the writing process behind the Lost season 1 episode “All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues”. We learn among other things that…

This is the episode where Locke and Boone first discover the hatch, but in Grillo-Marxuach’s first outline it wasn’t Boone who accompanied Locke, it was two guest characters made up from whole cloth, Arthur and Sullivan. Instead those characters were scrapped for a series regular, Boone, and in so doing, Grillo-Marxuach said it became the genesis for killing Boone later in the season.

Return dates and mobisodes

2 years ago by Andreas

Zap2it reports:

“Lost” will return to the schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 7, almost exactly three months after its final fall episode airs Nov. 8. The scheduling strategy is an effort by ABC to avoid repeats of the heavily serialized show; it has three more episodes to go in its initial run this fall and will have 16 weeks of uninterrupted episodes when it returns.

Another serial drama, “Day Break,” will take its place starting Nov. 15.

It will be a bit boring to not get any new episodes until February, but I like the new strategy with new episodes every week once the second part of season 3 starts.

I’m not sure if it’s confirmed, but there has been talk about “mobisodes” during the 16 week break. This is what SciFi Wire wrote about it back in May:

The mobisodes, available exclusively from Verizon in the fall, will be two- or three-minute segments spun off of the main series, Cuse said. He added that producers were able to incorporate the show’s main characters, as played by the series’ stars, as a result of special deals worked out with Touchstone Television, which produces the series, and the various unions representing the show’s talent.

I’ve heard that the “mobisodes” (mobile episodes) will be available on the net some days after they are made available to Verizon customers, but we’ll have to wait for more details.

There are three episodes left in the first part of the third season - Next up is tonight’s episode “Every Man for Himself”.

The Associate Press are Lost

2 years ago by Andreas

I just found a short video clip about Lost by the Associate Press. In the video they talk about last week’s episode “Further Instructions”, comment on the producers’ comparison between Lost and 9/11 and discuss the new season.

The video is a bit entertaining, but I was a bit confused by the AP entertainment writer who claimed that the new formula focusing more on relationships has made more people watch Lost.

The fact is, Lost has been loosing viewers during all of the three episodes that have aired this season. I don’t know if the focus on relationships is what has made fans switch channels or if people are just getting fed up with not getting as many answers as they’d like, but if the idea behind Lost season 3 being the “season of love” was to gain viewers, it hasn’t worked yet.

The Lost Heroes

2 years ago by Andreas

Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and Tim Kring, creator of NBC’s Heroes, are friends and used to work together on Crossing Jordan. Entertainment Weekly’s Lost specialist Jeff Jensen even speculates about a secret connection between Lost and Heroes.

While watching Heroes I spotted a few more connections to Lost:

The character Matt Parkman is played by Greg Grunberg, a friend of JJ Abrams who played the pilot in Lost, and former Lost supervising producer and comic book writer Jeph Loeb is one of the writers of Heroes.

Lost is till my favorite show, but so far, Heroes has been really cool.

Have you spotted any other similarities between the two shows?

300

No, this isn’t a post about Frank Miller’s comic book or the upcoming movie with the same name, this is much cooler.

The Lost Blog now features over 300 posts written by myself, Cecilia and a few less regular contributors.

The 300th post was actually the one about the Lost episode “Further Instructions“, which coincidentally is episode 3 in season 3. If we should focus on creepy numbers though, I suppose we should throw a big party when we reach 815 posts. That will probably happen sometime in the middle of the zombie season.

At the time of writing this, you guys have written 4,297 comments, but that’s nothing compared to the spammers who have tried to sneak in well above 6,000 spam comments. It’s fun to see that both you guys and the spammers seem to appreciate the site!

Do you have any ideas or suggestions to make the site even better? What do you like/dislike? Post a comment and I’ll see what I can do!

UK Channel 4 loses bid for Lost to Sky One

2 years, 1 month ago by Cecilia

According to Variety, UK Channel 4 viewers may feel a bit lost when the third season of Lost starts.

In the United Kingdom, Lost Seasons One and Two were shown on Channel 4, but they where recently outbid by paid-subscription satellite provider Sky One. They bid roughly $1 million dollars per episode to broadcast Seasons Three and Four, and Channel 4 declined to up the ante, due largely to declining ratings (4.1 million to 2.8 million) for Lost in the U.K.

Mike and Tom are not the same

2 years, 1 month ago by Andreas

I thought last week’s post about Juliet and Penelope would be the only post I’d have to write to explain that two characters seen on Lost are not the same, but I was wrong.

A lot of you have started asking about Mike, the fatherly figure who was growing marijuana in Locke’s flashback in the Lost season 3 episode “Further Instructions”. Apparently he looks a bit like Tom, the big guy among The Others also known as Zeke, Beardy and Mr.Friendly.

Once again - they are not the same character.

Tom from The Others and Mike from Locke's weed farm.

To the left, Tom played by M.C. Gainey. To the right, Mike from the flashback in “Further Instructions” played by Chris Mulkey.

Also, thanks to commenter Samsandrasan for trying to clear this up in the comments.

Precognition and Gamma Radiation

2 years, 1 month ago by Andreas

The most interesting thing in “Further Instructions” besides Locke’s visions and his return to the hunter role was Desmond’s new “power”.

Desmond in the jungle

When Hurley tells Desmond that Jack, Kate and Sawyer have been captured, Desmond answers:

Don’t worry, Locke’s gonna go after them. He said so in his speech.

Like us, Hurley has no idea what Desmond is talking about and Desmond excuses himself, explaining that he is “just a bit shook up”.

Later we find out that Desmond somehow actually knew what he was talking about. In a dramatic speech at the very end of the episode Locke proclaims:

“I’m gonna find our friends. I don’t know how yet, but I will. We’re gonna find them. All of them. And then we’re gonna bring them home.”

So how could Desmond know what Locke would say in the future? It seems like he has been given the gift of precognition which is explained like this on Wikipedia - “Believers in precognition say it allows a “percipient” to perceive information about future places or events before they happen”.

I have no idea how Desmond’s precognition works, but I think I know how he got his new powers. Note how Hurley asks Desmond if he will become The Hulk now. I don’t think he will become the Hulk but I think this was a clue.

In The Hulk, Dr. Bruce Banner was hit by gamma radiation which altered his genes and turned him into The Hulk.

Gamma radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation so it wouldn’t surprise me if Desmond has received a high amount of gamma radiation through the destruction of the electromagnetic anomaly in the Swan station.

It is also interesting that Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof is writing the comic book “Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk”.

What are your thoughts?
