They were the carriers

1 year, 8 months ago by Andreas

Remember when we first met Danielle Rousseau in the Lost season 1 episode “Solitary”? We all thought that she was crazy, but what if we were wrong…

Rousseau: “We were part of a science team…
Our vessel was three days out of Tahiti, but our instruments malfunctioned. It was night, a storm.. the sounds.. The ship slammed into rocks. Ran aground. The hull breached beyond repair.. so, we made camp, dug out this temporary shelter… temporary. Nearly two months we survived here. Two months before…

Sayid: “Your distress signal, the message I heard - you said “it killed them all”.

Rousseau: “We were coming back from the black rock. It was them, they were the carriers!”

Sayid: “Who were the carriers?”

Rousseau: “The others”

Sayid: “What others? What is the black rock? Have you seen other people on this island?”

Rousseau: “No, but I hear them. Out there in the jungle. They whisper.”

I think Rousseau knew exactly what she was talking about.

When referring to “the others” being carriers, I think we can assume that there is some form of deadly virus or disease on the island (the sickness) but when we heard Rousseau say this, we didn’t know about The Others, so the question is, are Ben’s Others the carriers of a deadly virus or are the others Rousseau is referring to other “Others”?

This is a bit of a stretch, but…
Danielle says that she was part of a science team, but we’ve always assumed that her team had nothing to do with Dharma or those we know as “The Others”. What if Rousseau was a Dharma scientist? If she was, how does that affect our view of her?

The sickness

Later in the same episode Rousseau continues to talk about the sickness:

Rousseau: “It took them, one after the other. I had no choice, they where already lost.”

Sayid: “You killed them”

Rousseau: “What would have happened if we where rescued? I couldn’t let that happen.”

The question remains - what is the sickness and does it even exist?
Rousseau sure seems convinced that the sickness is a real and very scary thing.

On the other hand, the word “Quarantine” was printed on the inside of the hatch doors and Desmond and Kelvin injected themselves with a vaccine, but since that appeared to be a hoax that Kelvin pulled off to steal Desmond’s boat it’s impossible to know for sure.

It is worth noting that Kelvin had Hazmat gear which he wore outside the hatch. If the sickness is a hoax, why would Dharma keep Hazmat suits? My guess is that the suits where used for protection against the electromagnetic anomaly in the Swan station.

The virus

Another idea which depends on how Lost is tied together with the Lost Experience is that the sickness could be Mittelwerk’s virus which is designed to kill 30% of the world’s population. However, considering time differences I’m not sure about this. Maybe the sickness was the base for the virus…

And now for something completely different

As a last note, there was a somewhat unrelated but still interesting thing said in “Solitary”. When Sayid asks Rousseau about her transmission she answers:

“It is broadcast from somewhere else, but they control it now.”

If “they” are The Others, how can they be in control of the transmitter now but not have been so when Rousseau changed the transmission into her call for distress? Does this mean that The Others came to the island after Rousseau or that they didn’t know about the transmitter?

UK Lost Petition

1 year, 8 months ago by Andreas

As we’ve previously reported, Lost Season 3 will be shown on Sky instead of Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. Since this will prevent those UK fans without Sky to watch the show, a petition has been started.

I contacted Sky about a week ago to determine whether they were planning to show season three on Sky Three for those of us without Sky but with Freeview, or on normal terrestrial channels for those with neither. The response I got was that they currently had no plans to show the series on Sky Three or terrestrial, but that may change.

Therefore, I propose that we start a petition. If enough of you loyal Lost fans sign it with your names, we may be able to swing the Sky schedulers our way and get Lost shown on Sky Three or even back on Channel 4.

So please, anyone in the UK who does not have Sky, or even Freeview, sign this petition so that we’re not deprived of this amazing show!

Matthew Fox likes The Others

1 year, 9 months ago by Andreas

Matthew Fox, Lost’s Jack, recently spoke to Comingsoon.net about the new movies he is starring in and how he feels about Jack living in captivity with The Others.

“I understand the audience missing some of those other dynamics, but the story is dictating right now that we’re looking at the story more from The Others’ perspective than our original survivors’ perspective.
I think that’s a really amazing thing that the show is doing. Because Jack is now part of those Others—being held in captivity there—I’ve gotten to work with these new actors and create completely new relationships and dynamics, and that’s been really exciting for me. The stuff that’s happening between Jack and Juliette and Jack and Ben and the relationships that my character has with The Others, I think there’s an understanding between us as actors that on the day that we work, there is a certain dynamic that we strike, but I’m getting to know them both as people, and they’re amazing. I just love them as actors, and I’m really excited about working with them all the time and how psychological the work is.”

Fox also claimed that he doesn’t worry too much about Jack getting killed off:

“I don’t worry about it too much. I feel really fortunate to be a part of this project, and from an objective point, I do understand that it’s an element of the show that’s important. You can’t create this island in which life is always in the balance and then not have people perish. I think that’s just part of the show, so yeah, that’s always in the back of my mind, but I don’t sweat it too much. If that times comes for Jack Shephard, it’s because that’s what is meant to happen in the story, and I have an enormous amount of faith in Damon Lindeloff and J.J. and Carlton that they’re on top of that.”

The competition ends soon

1 year, 9 months ago by Andreas

The deadline for our Lost Theory Competition draws near.

At the time of writing this we have received under 20 theories so there is still a good chance to win. If you haven’t submitted yet, write a theory and send it in for a chance to win books, CDs, Apollo bars and a bunch of other Lost related things!

Also, we have recently updated the competition rules to not be as restrictive as before:

We are primarily looking for new ideas. If your theory has been published before, you have to update and re-write it to make it new and exciting.

You are not allowed to publish your entry anywhere else until one months after the competition deadline. However, you are allowed to publish a short quote from your entry on other sites and forums with a link to the full theory at The Lost Blog both during and after the one month period.

When submitting your entry, you agree to giving us unlimited and indefinite rights to publish and display the submitted theory/analysis. You will be credited as the author of the entry but will not receive any royalties or monetary compensation. If The Lost Blog should ever change owner, these rights pass on to the new owner.

The competition ends 00:00 October 31, Eastern time, so you are able to submit during October 30.

Good luck to everyone!

Prophets and Martyrs, Revisited.

1 year, 9 months ago by Cecilia

Back in “The Whole Truth” (which seems like ages now), before we knew Ben’s name or much about his true identity, he read a quote from The Brothers Karamazov, a classic Dostoevsky novel about redemption:

GALE: “Men reject their prophets and slay them, but they love their martyrs and honor those whom they have slain.” So, what’s the difference between a martyr and a prophet?

JACK: Either way, it sounds like you end up dead.

GALE: That’s the spirit.

It’s been a while, but I think this topic deserves revisiting. Ben was obviously trying to hint at something ironic in his usual sly way. I believe he was saying that people do not often want to hear the real truth.

Clairvoyance, prescience and prophets have emerged as a major theme in LOST:

  • Richard Malkin, the ‘psychic’, seemed to know what was to happen to Claire, but then claimed to be a fraud… or was he?
  • Claire had several prophetic dreams while on the island, dreaming of Aaron being at risk, and the Oceanic mobile later seen in the Staff Station, and her dreams of the Black Rock in her diary.
  • Boone had a vision of Shannon being killed after Locke applied a mysterious paste to his wound.
  • Charlie had religious dreams of Aaron in danger.
  • Walt appeared to have clairvoyant abilities, and predicted something would happen to the raft.
  • Shannon had visions of Walt before she knew he was missing (and Walt in those visions appeared to try to warn her).
  • Hurley had a dream in which Walt was seen on the milk carton as a “Missing Person”, before he heard news he was missing.
  • Locke had several prophetic dreams, including the one of the finding of the Beechcraft/Boone dying, one where he was led to the location of the “?”, and the one self-induced drug trance (dreaming of Boone and the airport) which led him to find injured Eko.
  • Eko dreamt of Ana-Lucia shot, before he had news of her death.
  • Desmond most recently appears to have gained powers of precognition, as he predicts both Locke’s speech and lightening striking the area of Claire’s tent.
  • By “martyrs”, that could be anyone’s guess. The person that comes to my mind (besides Ben refering to himself willing to die for his cause) is Boone, who Locke said was a “sacrifice for the island”.

How do you interpret the Karamazov quote, and what Ben meant by using it?

Preview of The Cost of Living

1 year, 9 months ago by Andreas

Due to popular demand, here is the preview of next week’s episode “The Cost of Living”.

I would like to remind you that this post is a test. Some people consider the previews spoilers, others don’t. If you consider them to be spoilers, obviously you don’t want to watch this video or read the comments on this post.

    Is the Galaga the submarine?

1 year, 9 months ago by Cecilia

In the episode “The Glass Ballerina”, Colleen is heard saying:

“Danny, wait. They have a boat. Ben wants us to take the Galaga…”

I’ve seen some speculation on the forums that this is a formal name, possibly for a boat, but after last week, it’s starting to sound like a submarine. In “Every Man for Himself”, Ben says to Juliet:

“The sub is back, so come with me now. We have a situation.”

Is this how the Others get between the smaller island and the main island? What are your thoughts on the separation of the Hydra from the rest of the DHARMA activities? Does Ben have more cons in store for Sawyer et al?

    Lost Spoilers and Episode Previews

1 year, 9 months ago by Andreas

I had to remove several posts from the “Every Man for Himself” thread earlier this morning because they contained spoilers in the form of information from previews/teasers of future episodes.

The reason for removing this information is that I don’t want to spoil future episodes for those who don’t want to know what’s going to happen before the episodes are aired.

Personally I also prefer not to read spoilers since it makes the show more exciting, but if a majority of our readers don’t mind discussing episode previews, I suppose we could change the rules.

Regular spoilers will never be allowed on this site, but how do you feel about the episode previews/teasers? Do you watch them or do you consider them to be spoilers?

Another possibility would be to publish the episode previews in separate posts and only allow discussion of them in those comment threads. Thoughts?
